Contact is awesome n all but It's a bit disappointing that they forgo the incredible funky drumming in favour of CRASH CRASH CRASH CRASH for the second half.

nagl dude dude dude (ledge), Thursday, 23 May 2013 16:38 (thirteen years ago)

CRASH CRASH CRASH is awesome though. No lie, I was reminded of the track Tarfumes did for the ILX Beatles comp.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 23 May 2013 16:51 (thirteen years ago)

My favorite drumming moment on this record is the breakbeat that sneaks into the second half of "Fragments of Time"

MIGUEL 3D: THEY FLY @ U FACE (The Reverend), Thursday, 23 May 2013 19:29 (thirteen years ago)

So the scratching on Giorgio by Moroder, that's samples sequenced to the drumbeat, right? Can't believe it could be that tight done live.

archibald brandysnap, Thursday, 23 May 2013 19:48 (thirteen years ago)

it could be their synth?

ḉrut (crüt), Thursday, 23 May 2013 19:50 (thirteen years ago)

ha, yesterday i got to the point of "dude, you need to ease back on the CRASH CRASH CRASH."

live drums and dead hearts (Hunt3r), Thursday, 23 May 2013 19:57 (thirteen years ago)

saw the vinyl yesterday ..
despite not normally caring re old school scratchy vinyl i was very tempted (in a big studio/session musician mood at the moment - see philly disco !) ..
however, the note on the sleeve re 'includes download codes' put me off.
if they had included a cd a la several other vinyl editions, then i would have done the deed.
also, i love the vinyl label a la advert.
old school columbia red/yellow logo.
looks ace ..

the now-we're-finally-taking-off sound wouldn't be complete without the CRASH CRASH CRASH

"No lie, I was reminded of the track Tarfumes did for the ILX Beatles comp."

no lie, tarfumes is one of the most amazing drummers you will ever see if you see him play live.

scott seward, Thursday, 23 May 2013 20:26 (thirteen years ago)

is he really an escaped goat?

ḉrut (crüt), Thursday, 23 May 2013 20:27 (thirteen years ago)

Woah xp - I've always dreamed of sounding like Nile, and for the first minute of that I think I do.

The groove he locks into at 2:20 though, bloody hell

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 23 May 2013 20:34 (thirteen years ago)

He was just warming up since he forgot the song give him a break.

Moka, Thursday, 23 May 2013 20:42 (thirteen years ago)

allegedly he plays guitar on any album he works on

now is not the time for motorboating (dandydonweiner), Thursday, 23 May 2013 21:12 (thirteen years ago)

There's not a track on this album I dislike.

Give Life Back, Giorgio by Moroder, Instant Crush through Get Lucky and Fragments of Time are favourites though.

President of the People's Republic of Antarctica, Thursday, 23 May 2013 22:54 (thirteen years ago)

Within is kind of bleh.

Moka, Friday, 24 May 2013 00:07 (thirteen years ago)

within sets the mood

the Quim of Bendigo (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 24 May 2013 00:11 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah i seen it as a transition, it works in the album but it doesnt stand well on its own.

Moka, Friday, 24 May 2013 00:15 (thirteen years ago)

It's the one track I can never really remember how it goes.

"Turkey In The Straw" coming from someplace in the clouds (Sparkle Motion), Friday, 24 May 2013 00:27 (thirteen years ago)

I love Within.

Instant Crush and Beyond are the one's that are kind of "bleh" for me, but that may very well change.

It's a good sign that there seems to be no unanimous agreement about what's filler and what isn't. Some dismiss "Giorgio"; others "Lose Yourself to Dance"; others "Doin' it Right".

Eggs and the marketing board behind them, Friday, 24 May 2013 01:40 (thirteen years ago)

should we poll it yet

ʎqןıs (gr8080), Friday, 24 May 2013 02:24 (thirteen years ago)

give it a few months

balls, Friday, 24 May 2013 02:25 (thirteen years ago)

re: "scratching" on Giorgio - i'm pretty sure that's noise from an analog synth through a gate triggered by the drumtrack (with the gate being opened wider around the 8:00 mark) </nerd> very clever, don't remember hearing that on many records

random brainwave, Friday, 24 May 2013 04:05 (thirteen years ago)

...and probably won't either because you can't do it on your bloody laptop can you

hadn't thought of it but there's got to be loads of similar subtle studio shit on this record actually - haven't seen much talk about that aspect

random brainwave, Friday, 24 May 2013 04:10 (thirteen years ago)

Within has been stuck in my head for three days.

Proving consensus is dead.

Naive Teen Idol, Friday, 24 May 2013 04:15 (thirteen years ago)

i want to hear more about this vinyl volume issue. i hate that!

christmas candy bar (al leong), Friday, 24 May 2013 04:16 (thirteen years ago)

Or what Eggs said.

Is it possible this record is as important as it was hyped to be?

Naive Teen Idol, Friday, 24 May 2013 04:17 (thirteen years ago)

my vinyl has no issues on my setup xp

a very generous Cordoban (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 24 May 2013 04:17 (thirteen years ago)

ok cool, i'm probably getting this vile earworm of a classic for father's day

christmas candy bar (al leong), Friday, 24 May 2013 04:22 (thirteen years ago)

I wish whoever mixed this had made Pharrell's vocal tracks on "Lose Yourself to Dance" 1-2 dB quieter in the mix. It sounds weird to me esp. when I listen to it at low volume because the groove is so immense and perfectly balanced but the vocals are just barely too loud to really mesh with it. To me anyway.

ḉrut (crüt), Friday, 24 May 2013 06:26 (thirteen years ago)

motherboard kinda reminding me of tree of limbs a lil bit?

conrad, Friday, 24 May 2013 08:23 (thirteen years ago)

who is liam gallagher

the Quim of Bendigo (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 24 May 2013 08:25 (thirteen years ago)

Ouch, I wouldn't want to be Daft Punk right now.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 24 May 2013 08:27 (thirteen years ago)

He'd never say "sans helmet"

willem, Friday, 24 May 2013 08:31 (thirteen years ago)

It took him six years to write Little James, that must be amazing

Ismael Klata, Friday, 24 May 2013 08:45 (thirteen years ago)

Who's paying for the sponsorship?? Can't be cheap!

columbia records sponsor lotus.

... (LocalGarda), Friday, 24 May 2013 08:54 (thirteen years ago)

the only track I find weak/not interesting so far is "game of love".
the rest goes from fun/good to great/glorious.
some tracks are a bit too long though.
my favourite track for now might be "giorgio" (although I have had "within" stuck in my head since this morning).

AlXTC from Paris, Friday, 24 May 2013 11:28 (thirteen years ago)

'game of love' is awfully like the old man jazz yello is pumping out these days

the Quim of Bendigo (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 24 May 2013 11:36 (thirteen years ago)

Game of Love and Within are blah and Lose Yourself to Dance drags but I like/love everything else. The sequencing of the second disc is much more effective than the first - I can't fathom the logic behind making Game of Love track 2 instead of Giorgio. It's such a buzzkill.

Deafening silence (DL), Friday, 24 May 2013 11:42 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, "game of love" shouldn't even be on the album. and certainly not at the second position !

AlXTC from Paris, Friday, 24 May 2013 11:47 (thirteen years ago)

I think one of the coolest things about this record is how good a template they've made for other people use as a platform; it'll probably be getting remixed forever and other people will be using this for samples in turn, basically like they made a database of brand new samples - I mean it makes sense looking at it from the perspective of making something akin to the records that originally inspired them

Also I can't stop listening to it, I think it is their best album even if I'm not always entirely sure why. And I'm looking forward to more from RAM, like this is just a starting point which is a nice feeling. People who complain you can't dance to it like Discovery or that certain songs aren't fast enough or whatever may as well be saying you can't dance to disco.

not lazy but clowning (Suedey 2), Friday, 24 May 2013 11:50 (thirteen years ago)

Game of Love and Within are two of the songs on the album I like but don't fully love yet. I kind of feel like they didn't need to put both of them on the album, they both slow the pace down too much on the first half and they both do exactly the same job.

I'm so surprised to see people saying they don't rate Lose Yourself to Dance (Pitchfork included) I've settled on that being my favourite song for now, it's closely followed by Giorgio.

I'm just so in love with this album right now, it just keeps sounding better and better.

Kitchen Person, Friday, 24 May 2013 12:00 (thirteen years ago)

Game of Love was my favorite track on first listen. That vocoder hum section at the end is beautiful.

circa1916, Friday, 24 May 2013 12:01 (thirteen years ago)

Love the general sound of Game Of Love plus Bangalter's accent coming thru more ("then eet wuz yoooo"). If the music was exactly the same but the singer was being more elaborately in emoting like e.g. Miguel I guess its game would get more love?

nashwan, Friday, 24 May 2013 12:01 (thirteen years ago)

I don't really see this being sampled much really or at least not in effective ways (I'm sure people will try) - like to think this was v intentional from DP. Remixes and re-edits (whether by DP or others) is a different matter.

nashwan, Friday, 24 May 2013 12:04 (thirteen years ago)

INSTANT CRRUSSSSH

Beatrix Kiddo (Raymond Cummings), Friday, 24 May 2013 12:14 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah I guess I just mean it was like they made their own samples more than anything, their own entire record like that which they might have used before and I find something really satisfying in that idea xp
