i thought the best thing about LK was how it pushed the template further outwards at its best - more melodically generous, even weirder production on songs like "sex intelligent" etc

and yeah mdc otm LK's highs are so great that the bits that drag don't matter. IV has no such highs and a looooot that drags

I feel like this new one is less beholden to a template than Love King. On that album, nearly every track felt like a re-write of something on LH or LK (albeit an often-very-good rewrite). But IV doesn't drag like the worst stretches of LK, and there's a slight shift toward more straightforward, grown-up R&B that I think is pretty becoming.

k3v upthread mentions "opposite sides of the same coin" to me wrt dream which i agree with but would actually take further, a la 1977 - the-dream, fantasised romantichimerapparition of the-reality terius nash, with this album undoubtedly the poorest representation of the former but the best to date of the latter

to me (and i guess this chimes in with evan further upthread) this album is almost kinda like a magically transported and retooled unearthed terius debut from the 90s, from that once upon a time atl r&b c-lister who did minor regional heat for raheem the dream and b-rock & the bizz etc, only instead of shanaynay from around the way singing bout pagers it's beyonce singing bout that siri

naturally i can see how that may not be of much allure to dreamer aesthetes but imo better the local and lo-qual vitality of this record than the sadly diminished returns of love king and 'slow it down'

ALso k3vin is my dream weathervane, so.

Four songs into this and I'm not sure I have the will to carry on. I'm prepared to forgive or overlook a lot of his skeeziness and laziness when it's surrounded by swirling clouds of multicoloured synths and amazing pop rushes but a lot of this is just dirge.

Liveblogging reax: first two tunes and I'm like "this is kinda fun, imma enjoy this if I pretend that it's a ray j album or something", then my attention wandered and suddenly "equestrian" been and gone, "pussy" actively annoying BUT the arrangement is pretty awes. TBC...

"Turnt" is fun. I'm glad that I've taken a break from dream for a while, it makes it less distressing that this album ain't serving bangers with creamy nash.

"where have you been" floats about nicely, the piano's reminiscent of "hate u" (i think?) and another nash-penned song i can't mentally place atm

actually i would go so far as to say all of the raps are in their proper places, we're given a 2013 jay-z verse, a 2013 pusha verse, on a 2013 the-dream album; who has the right to complain really?

Ehhhhhh. I like this but I don't love it yet. It's a bit too mannish, like he's trying to impress me now instead of just going for the panties. Not sure if any of these songs hold up to anything on Love King tbh. But I'll keep listening.

It's hilarious to me that LK is thought of by so many as Dream's solo high water mark

Basically all the people I know IRL into the-dream think Love King is his best album or only album (as of a month ago) worth bothering with.

yeah it's weird because all of his hits were with his early work, but i've noticed the same thing

Not comparing this to LK as Terius' greatest moment here, simply comparing this to it as the last proper The-Dream album. I'd probably take Used To Be over most of the songs here too though.

LK = fidelity/tech proficient but humorless

I love LK just as much as the first two (not saying it is better though). Calling it humourless feels wrong - 4 Play sounds kinda humourless to me but Love King was really fun!
