"it seems like a pretty objective opinion to have to me" is an amazing phrase

jay is just biting 2 chainz on his verse, right?

you are not a better writer than f. scott fitzgerald. you are not a b (k3vin k.), Thursday, 23 May 2013 13:16 (thirteen years ago)

a few weeks ago i turned on the radio in the middle of jay's bdkmv verse and "ME AND MY SPOUSE" sounded so much like 2 chainz for a second that now i can't unhear the occasional vocal similarity

my mans ray manzarek (some dude), Thursday, 23 May 2013 13:17 (thirteen years ago)

it's sad how imo one of the greatest ever has spent the last several years of his career trendhopping like he has, wish he'd have just a little bit of self-respect

i don't have such an urgent thurst for winnie the pooh singing asshole slow jams that i can't wait for it to hit spotify

my mans ray manzarek (some dude), Thursday, 23 May 2013 13:21 (thirteen years ago)

the title track is one of the least defensible things here, such a pale imitation of past half-glories

I haven't heard this yet but I'm feeling this assessment. ALso k3vin is my dream weathervane, so.

Tim F, Thursday, 23 May 2013 13:25 (thirteen years ago)

i'm talking about jay fwiw!

you are not a better writer than f. scott fitzgerald. you are not a b (k3vin k.), Thursday, 23 May 2013 13:27 (thirteen years ago)

haha I knew that actually but my post could have been clearer it's true.

Tim F, Thursday, 23 May 2013 13:28 (thirteen years ago)

Meant I'd trust you on how jay would pan out in this context - although maybe that's kinda shooting fish in a barrel.

Tim F, Thursday, 23 May 2013 13:29 (thirteen years ago)

haha

i was wondering where you were coming down on this tho so i'm looking forward to your reactions

you are not a better writer than f. scott fitzgerald. you are not a b (k3vin k.), Thursday, 23 May 2013 13:29 (thirteen years ago)

i'm not feeling this and agree with k3vin for the most part. especially w.r.t

yeah it's crazy how he can love this bitch, while he says fuck this bitch, while he fucks this bitch

i know his lyrics have always been corny and that was part of the charm but i just don't find it charming anymore. it's really a personal thing though, i can't listen to his old stuff either :'(

tpp, Thursday, 23 May 2013 13:31 (thirteen years ago)

I don't actually listen to music anymore. Being aware that things are happening b/c there appear to be ILM threads about them is as much as I can manage.

Still maintain that this guy falls off the rails as soon as he starts thinking he's better than whoever he's fucking.

Tim F, Thursday, 23 May 2013 13:32 (thirteen years ago)

can sympathize with wanting to keep up w/ tunes but life intervening. wish you'd get paid lots to write about it so that wouldn't be a problem

you are not a better writer than f. scott fitzgerald. you are not a b (k3vin k.), Thursday, 23 May 2013 13:35 (thirteen years ago)

Terrible album. Never listening to it again.

Andy K, Thursday, 23 May 2013 15:02 (thirteen years ago)

i don't necessarily agree with this and i am avoiding the album till release (given the penchant for dramatic audio shifts at the last minute that dude sometimes employs + just wanna hear it clearly and not that desperate for new music just now) but "winnie the pooh singing asshole slow jams" is pretty classic

klaus dingeldore's rhinelander monkey keeper father (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 23 May 2013 15:16 (thirteen years ago)

I guess the album is a failure if you hold it to the rigid criteria of sounding exactly like Love/Hate. But as a "Dream branches out and does some new stuff" record, I think it's pretty great. He's done the upbeat, plinky-piano thing so many times now that I really didn't need to hear it again. Would've been depressing if the whole album was variations of "Dope Bitch"/"Slow It Down," as much as I reflexively love that sound.

Evan R, Thursday, 23 May 2013 15:21 (thirteen years ago)

he's not really branching out much though, most of the weaker stuff on this album sounds a lot like certain parts of "love king". and a handful of people here weren't into about half of that record

you are not a better writer than f. scott fitzgerald. you are not a b (k3vin k.), Thursday, 23 May 2013 15:23 (thirteen years ago)

I guess the album is a failure if you hold it to the rigid criteria of sounding exactly like Love/Hate

this is not the only reason half of it sucks (i say this as someone who was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't a disaster but let's not carried away it's not a very good album at all)

But as a "Dream branches out and does some new stuff" record

lol what new stuff? there's hardly anything on this album that i haven't heard some form of before (whether by him or not).

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Thursday, 23 May 2013 15:25 (thirteen years ago)

Just catching up itt, but according to wiki "Dope Bitch" isn't even going to be on the released version, not even on the deluxe edition.

i kant believe it's not buffon (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 23 May 2013 15:25 (thirteen years ago)

you are not a better writer than f. scott fitzgerald. you are not a b (k3vin k.), Thursday, 23 May 2013 15:26 (thirteen years ago)

ok, just wondered since i saw quite a few mentions about it here. i was excited when i saw signs for this in Target last night, but now that i'm reading this thread i don't know anymore. :/ y u brake hart terius?

i kant believe it's not buffon (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 23 May 2013 15:29 (thirteen years ago)

i feel like if you were into "love king" you'll like this just fine. andy's probably the exception to that rule

you are not a better writer than f. scott fitzgerald. you are not a b (k3vin k.), Thursday, 23 May 2013 15:37 (thirteen years ago)

I feel like this new one is less beholden to a template than Love King. On that album, nearly every track felt like a re-write of something on LH or LK (albeit an often-very-good rewrite). But IV doesn't drag like the worst stretches of LK, and there's a slight shift toward more straightforward, grown-up R&B that I think is pretty becoming.

Evan R, Thursday, 23 May 2013 15:37 (thirteen years ago)

jay-z is great on 'watch the throne' and has put out two very dope solo songs this year imo

J0rdan S., Thursday, 23 May 2013 15:39 (thirteen years ago)

thanks k3vin that actually makes me more hopeful about this.

i kant believe it's not buffon (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 23 May 2013 15:41 (thirteen years ago)

Love King without the highs doesn't sound particularly appealing in all honesty, given that Love King is *all about* the highs. No one listens to that album for the boilerplate stuff.

Matt DC, Thursday, 23 May 2013 15:43 (thirteen years ago)

the title track and "slow it down" are legit highs imo, and there are some other moments as well, but it's a step below LK ultimately i think

"pussy" might be the most generically juvenile song he's written

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Thursday, 23 May 2013 15:47 (thirteen years ago)

i thought the best thing about LK was how it pushed the template further outwards at its best - more melodically generous, even weirder production on songs like "sex intelligent" etc

and yeah mdc otm LK's highs are so great that the bits that drag don't matter. IV has no such highs and a looooot that drags

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Thursday, 23 May 2013 15:48 (thirteen years ago)

I can't tell if my phone is loading the thread weird or of k3v is just repping for the same 2 songs over and over

my mans ray manzarek (some dude), Thursday, 23 May 2013 15:52 (thirteen years ago)

I listen to Love King for EVERYTHING.

johnny crunch, Thursday, 23 May 2013 16:12 (thirteen years ago)

this album has plenty of highs

J0rdan S., Thursday, 23 May 2013 16:21 (thirteen years ago)

man I hadn't heard L vs H in ages and this morning's listen while showering was so good. Forgot how great "She Needs My Love" is.

yeah this is essentially where i'm standing, minus the payola vaguery

k3v upthread mentions "opposite sides of the same coin" to me wrt dream which i agree with but would actually take further, a la 1977 - the-dream, fantasised romantichimerapparition of the-reality terius nash, with this album undoubtedly the poorest representation of the former but the best to date of the latter

to me (and i guess this chimes in with evan further upthread) this album is almost kinda like a magically transported and retooled unearthed terius debut from the 90s, from that once upon a time atl r&b c-lister who did minor regional heat for raheem the dream and b-rock & the bizz etc, only instead of shanaynay from around the way singing bout pagers it's beyonce singing bout that siri

naturally i can see how that may not be of much allure to dreamer aesthetes but imo better the local and lo-qual vitality of this record than the sadly diminished returns of love king and 'slow it down'

Four songs into this and I'm not sure I have the will to carry on. I'm prepared to forgive or overlook a lot of his skeeziness and laziness when it's surrounded by swirling clouds of multicoloured synths and amazing pop rushes but a lot of this is just dirge.

Complete waste of Beyonce as well by the way.

Matt DC, Thursday, 23 May 2013 20:48 (thirteen years ago)

Liveblogging reax: first two tunes and I'm like "this is kinda fun, imma enjoy this if I pretend that it's a ray j album or something", then my attention wandered and suddenly "equestrian" been and gone, "pussy" actively annoying BUT the arrangement is pretty awes. TBC...

Tim F, Thursday, 23 May 2013 21:49 (thirteen years ago)

"Turnt" is fun. I'm glad that I've taken a break from dream for a while, it makes it less distressing that this album ain't serving bangers with creamy nash.
