Random trivia--Bob Lefsetz talking about a Nile Rodgers presentation at a music conference in Ibiza:
After Daft Punk got "Get Lucky" they'd have everybody redo their parts, individually. And then they'd send the result to the next person in the chain. Nathan East heard Nile's new work and then he had to recut his bass part, he had to raise his game to complement Nile and the other players.
― curmudgeon, Thursday, 23 May 2013 14:12 (thirteen years ago)
I don't really follow that. After Daft Punk "got" Get Lucky?
― TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 23 May 2013 14:14 (thirteen years ago)
Rolling Stone feature is very illuminating. Thomas says that the second and last time he took E was the day Kurt Cobain died - coincidentally of course.
― Deafening silence (DL), Thursday, 23 May 2013 14:20 (thirteen years ago)
The bass part is fine, but I'd really love to hear what Nard would've done with it.

I've been purposely avoiding reading any hype about this album until I got a chance to really sit down with it, so I've been basically ignoring this thread and you'll have to forgive me for being relatively late to the game. But, damn, this thing is fantastic. I don't even hate the Panda Bear part. Skimming through the thread I see so many otm posts, especially like those who noted the Steely Dan vibe and the Tortoise on "Motherboard" - I was definitely feeling that to. I love how I keep returning to so many different things that I can't get enough of. Today I'm all about "Fragments of Time", I love that these guys were able to so seamlessly incorporate a little "twang" (for lack of a better term in my overworked brain this morning) with the steel guitar.

― curmudgeon, Thursday, 23 May 2013 15:26 (thirteen years ago)
also the keyboard melody that drifts in in the second verse of giorgio is amazing, just after "in the beginning". really subtle italo melody just behind the groove.
― ... (LocalGarda), Thursday, 23 May 2013 15:32 (thirteen years ago)
xp yeah, there was some other interview were Nile said he played them a bunch of stuff and they went away to fiddle with it, so I figure they came up with rough cuts based on those recordings and circulated it around a few times to bring everything properly together.
― ohmigud (Merdeyeux), Thursday, 23 May 2013 15:34 (thirteen years ago)
why does Moroder say his name Giovanni Giorgio, when I think his birthname is Hansjorg?
― mizzell, Thursday, 23 May 2013 15:37 (thirteen years ago)
Giovanni is the Italian cognate of Johannes (Hans) and Giorgio is the cognate of Jorg.
― ḉrut (crüt), Thursday, 23 May 2013 15:39 (thirteen years ago)
makes sense, thanks

This feels like an old-school album of two sides, with Get Lucky as the start of the second.

Contact is awesome n all but It's a bit disappointing that they forgo the incredible funky drumming in favour of CRASH CRASH CRASH CRASH for the second half.
― nagl dude dude dude (ledge), Thursday, 23 May 2013 16:38 (thirteen years ago)
CRASH CRASH CRASH is awesome though. No lie, I was reminded of the track Tarfumes did for the ILX Beatles comp.
― Ismael Klata, Thursday, 23 May 2013 16:51 (thirteen years ago)
My favorite drumming moment on this record is the breakbeat that sneaks into the second half of "Fragments of Time"
― MIGUEL 3D: THEY FLY @ U FACE (The Reverend), Thursday, 23 May 2013 19:29 (thirteen years ago)
So the scratching on Giorgio by Moroder, that's samples sequenced to the drumbeat, right? Can't believe it could be that tight done live.
― archibald brandysnap, Thursday, 23 May 2013 19:48 (thirteen years ago)
it could be their synth?

saw the vinyl yesterday .. despite not normally caring re old school scratchy vinyl i was very tempted (in a big studio/session musician mood at the moment - see philly disco !) .. however, the note on the sleeve re 'includes download codes' put me off.if they had included a cd a la several other vinyl editions, then i would have done the deed.also, i love the vinyl label a la advert.old school columbia red/yellow logo.looks ace ..

no lie, tarfumes is one of the most amazing drummers you will ever see if you see him play live.
