to start hating it
― A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 23 May 2013 00:58 (thirteen years ago)
i was in 11th grade when it came out, and throughout my senior year, that was the movie my classmates would wanna watch if the teacher let the class watch a movie. it was hell. and i mean, i was in middle school when Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore came out, and those movies made me question just how juvenile i thought i was.
― my mans ray manzarek (some dude), Thursday, 23 May 2013 01:08 (thirteen years ago)
kanye's basically saying that he'd rather be a aggressive boor than a faggot/woman/weakling.
jesus christ you're an idiot
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 23 May 2013 01:11 (thirteen years ago)
okay i probably shouldn't have said that but that line has nothing to do with femininity or "weakness"
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 23 May 2013 01:12 (thirteen years ago)
billy madison and happy Gilmore are both stone classics... the waterboy was on a level below
― 乒乓, Thursday, 23 May 2013 01:12 (thirteen years ago)
i mean he spells out 100% of the dick/swallower meaning in the line that precedes it
he's saying he'd rather be called a dick but be able to do what he wants than to be someone -- if you want to read it literally -- who is "swallowing" what the media or the government tells you (or "swallowing" culture)
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 23 May 2013 01:15 (thirteen years ago)
the way i read it, the metaphor does not imply weakness via a link to femininity or homosexuality, but via a link to passivity
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 23 May 2013 01:17 (thirteen years ago)
without casting aspersions, shit yeah it does! to swallow, in the sexual context that KW is clearly invoking, is to be feminized, submissive and (not to put too fine a point on it) gay. i mean, come on: "swallower" is also equated with "followers" and even "slaves". it's hardly a stretch to say that followers are sometimes viewed as weak relative to their strong leaders, and this is a call to arms, after all. kanye's saying he's a leader, and a dick in more than one metaphorical sense, and that he's proud of this position relative to the followers who swallow what dicks (like him!) spout.
― controversial vegan pregnancy (contenderizer), Thursday, 23 May 2013 01:20 (thirteen years ago)
i mean, you can interpret the implied gay slur out if you want, but i see that as willful blindness to a fairly blatant suggestion.

it's strange to presume that the sort of generalized way you want to take "swallower" can be totally disassociated from the (rather obvious) context that everyone is pointing. i mean, yeah, he probably means it in that broad way. but there are a 1000 ways to say that without invoking a phallus and everything that goes along with it. it doesn't matter what he intended, ultimately.
― ryan, Thursday, 23 May 2013 01:24 (thirteen years ago)
When he finally comes out, we'll have to bump this thread and add another layer.
― cougars and sneezers (Eazy), Thursday, 23 May 2013 01:29 (thirteen years ago)
it's not generalized at all. the song -- which ffs is called "new slaves" -- makes the implication very specific. the opposite reading is the one that's generalized.
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 23 May 2013 01:30 (thirteen years ago)
THINGS CAN MEAN MORE THAN ONE THING
everyone gets the meaning you're talking about. it's a super-obvious additional meaning, the engine that gives the line metaphorical bite, that you are failing to admit for no reason i can understand.
― controversial vegan pregnancy (contenderizer), Thursday, 23 May 2013 01:33 (thirteen years ago)
you know, that old cliche about swallowing culture, that thing that slaves do, duh
― my mans ray manzarek (some dude), Thursday, 23 May 2013 01:35 (thirteen years ago)
hmm yes it's almost as if "slaves" might have more than one meaning hmmm
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 23 May 2013 01:37 (thirteen years ago)
person who swallows things?
― controversial vegan pregnancy (contenderizer), Thursday, 23 May 2013 01:43 (thirteen years ago)
hmm yes it's almost as if it's a metaphor hmm yes
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 23 May 2013 01:45 (thirteen years ago)
I don't really care strongly about that line but j0rdan you're being dense

j0rdan can you please edit the rap genius entry, these guys are totally in the dark
― my mans ray manzarek (some dude), Thursday, 23 May 2013 01:46 (thirteen years ago)
hahaha if the implication of that post is that rap genius users side with your side of the argument, then i have some bad news for you...

i'd rather be one who excels than a viking
― da croupier, Thursday, 23 May 2013 01:56 (thirteen years ago)
no i just think it would be hilarious classic RG shit if the entry for that lyric explained that a swallower is someone who is "swallowing" what the media or the government tells you (or "swallowing" culture)
― my mans ray manzarek (some dude), Thursday, 23 May 2013 01:56 (thirteen years ago)
of course it's a metaphor. but "person who swallows things" is not a typical meaning of the word "slaves". this metaphor acquires one of its primary dimensions from juxtaposition with the word "dick". dicks, as i'm sure you know, have been known to produce fluid. certain parties have been known to ingest that fluid. i would hope you could take it from there...
― controversial vegan pregnancy (contenderizer), Thursday, 23 May 2013 01:57 (thirteen years ago)
wait wait is that what's throwing deej?

ha ok
honestly the SNL songs are second best to "Awesome" for me
― Beatrix Kiddo (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 23 May 2013 02:21 (thirteen years ago)
to be clear, i'm not up in arms about the lyric per se, i'm just sick of people thinking their lack of personal offense over something like this means anything more than that they're either distanced or desensitized. also ironic coming from somebody who's written articles about the subject that get those "what's the big deal?" comments.
― da croupier, Thursday, 23 May 2013 02:22 (thirteen years ago)
he'd rather be getting his dick sucked than be sucking some dick, is what he's saying. obviously like j0rdan says it's deeper than he doesn't want to suck dicks and has to be understood in the context of what the track is trying to say-- but i guess if it makes you feel uncomfortable, it makes you feel uncomfortable, even if you can listen past the surface meaning and i think everyone here is capable of that.
alright?
― dylannn, Thursday, 23 May 2013 02:36 (thirteen years ago)
in the history of fucked up kanye lines, this one is mild and mediocre, too.
― dylannn, Thursday, 23 May 2013 02:41 (thirteen years ago)
that's the thing "it's a metaphor" i get. "it's not offensive, because it's a metaphor" i don't. and yeah, the fact that people are bothering to defend a mediocre metaphor makes it rankle even more.
― da croupier, Thursday, 23 May 2013 02:41 (thirteen years ago)
that's what i'm saying, though. people offended by it aren't stupid enough to not be able to see it's a metaphor. it's about not wanting to suck dicks and even if it's a metaphor, it's still offensive.
j-0 needs to quit trying to break it down rapgenius style for people that already get it.
― dylannn, Thursday, 23 May 2013 02:45 (thirteen years ago)
