does anyone else feel like a really crucial missing piece of the jigsaw are terius' vocals? like, we all know he isn't the ~greatest singer~ or anything but his heart doesn't seem to be in it half the time, he sings most of the album like he sings demos. like the assholish lyrics of "michael" need a bit of panache to work but he doesn't sound invested in them like he did on eg "sweat it out" or even "florida university" in the past so you're just left with some nice los piano and a narrator you don't like

surprised no one's raving about "too early", i really like that one - the guitar works so well, love the combination of that with the pitch-shifted vox. and "holy love" is getting underrated, there's a drama there that the rest of the album lacks.

"new orleans" is completely unremarkable, it sits there and does absolutely nothing. fine song my ass. the central metaphor does not work on any level.

the last 30 seconds are pretty great when he switches it up but the rest of the song is dream at his misogynist mumblecore worst, it's like all of his worst qualities wrapped into one song

anyway i have no idea what kind of weirdo you have to be to prefer that song to "IV play", it seems like a pretty objective opinion to have to me

i don't necessarily agree with this and i am avoiding the album till release (given the penchant for dramatic audio shifts at the last minute that dude sometimes employs + just wanna hear it clearly and not that desperate for new music just now) but "winnie the pooh singing asshole slow jams" is pretty classic

I guess the album is a failure if you hold it to the rigid criteria of sounding exactly like Love/Hate. But as a "Dream branches out and does some new stuff" record, I think it's pretty great. He's done the upbeat, plinky-piano thing so many times now that I really didn't need to hear it again. Would've been depressing if the whole album was variations of "Dope Bitch"/"Slow It Down," as much as I reflexively love that sound.

I feel like this new one is less beholden to a template than Love King. On that album, nearly every track felt like a re-write of something on LH or LK (albeit an often-very-good rewrite). But IV doesn't drag like the worst stretches of LK, and there's a slight shift toward more straightforward, grown-up R&B that I think is pretty becoming.

jay-z is great on 'watch the throne' and has put out two very dope solo songs this year imo

Love King without the highs doesn't sound particularly appealing in all honesty, given that Love King is *all about* the highs. No one listens to that album for the boilerplate stuff.

the title track and "slow it down" are legit highs imo, and there are some other moments as well, but it's a step below LK ultimately i think

there's a slight shift toward more straightforward, grown-up R&B that I think is pretty becoming

"pussy" might be the most generically juvenile song he's written

i thought the best thing about LK was how it pushed the template further outwards at its best - more melodically generous, even weirder production on songs like "sex intelligent" etc

and yeah mdc otm LK's highs are so great that the bits that drag don't matter. IV has no such highs and a looooot that drags
