this is... quite good.... actually. would happily go so far (so very, very far) as to rate it above love king i think

trashy but persuasively consistent about it. feels more like just an honest skeezy dude dealwithit.gif and not so much the repetitious and crassly lumpen barrel-scrapings of a former poet

i mean like "maybe put my dick on it / over the weekend" has gotta be some sort of genius right

r|t|c, Wednesday, 22 May 2013 13:55 (thirteen years ago)

last few trax are pretty weaksauce though

r|t|c, Wednesday, 22 May 2013 13:56 (thirteen years ago)

"self-conscious" is pretty dope i think, as far as the final few tracks go

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 22 May 2013 13:59 (thirteen years ago)

yeah more so as a tranche than individually i guess

i guess we're just looking at opposite sides of the same coin - to me it seems he's got nothing left to say, which is fine when he falls back to those exercises in terius-dom that made me like him originally ("iv play", "slow it down") but when he rehashes his most amelodic, aimless material from LK i just can't deal with it.

on one listen my reaction is pretty much "pleasant and mild surprise that it's not as bad as i thought it would be (except when it is)" - felt like every so often there were flashes of new ideas but rarely followed through, the skeeziness enables terius not to fall on his face but there weren't very many real highs? i mean no matter what you think of love king it has "sex intelligent" and "yamaha"

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 14:14 (thirteen years ago)

"michael" is nice but there's a palpable lack of vitality there, like compare it to "take u home to my mama" for instance

you are not a better writer than f. scott fitzgerald. you are not a b (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 14:16 (thirteen years ago)

still can't believe rtc turns his nose up at "slow it down"

you are not a better writer than f. scott fitzgerald. you are not a b (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 14:20 (thirteen years ago)

i think "too early" was the stand-out on first listen for me, "turnt" was fun in a generic way (as is "high art", vaguely)

"pussy" and "equestrian" were terrrrible, "michael" drifted past rather, "loving you/crazy" had a few nice sounds but compared to all his big epics previously it's just inadequate

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 14:22 (thirteen years ago)

yeah "loving you/crazy" is just a complete stinkbomb, i take back everything i said about "abyss"

you are not a better writer than f. scott fitzgerald. you are not a b (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 14:24 (thirteen years ago)

jay on "high art" is just so sad, someone put him in a home already

"Michael" can be epic or blah depending on my mood

Beatrix Kiddo (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 14:27 (thirteen years ago)

"High art" sucked

I'm cherry picking on iTunes once this drops

"Michael" can be epic or blah depending on my mood

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 14:31 (thirteen years ago)

Beatrix Kiddo (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 14:33 (thirteen years ago)

乒乓, Wednesday, 22 May 2013 18:42 (thirteen years ago)

Jacques_Lamure, Wednesday, 22 May 2013 18:47 (thirteen years ago)

"new Orleans" is like 3:30 of dreams worst song ever and then 30 seconds of a really dope outro

you are not a better writer than f. scott fitzgerald. you are not a b (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 20:52 (thirteen years ago)

"IV play" is really a monster though

you are not a better writer than f. scott fitzgerald. you are not a b (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 21:04 (thirteen years ago)

i couldn't figure out what the end of "new orleans" was reminding me of, but it's "crossroads" !!

you are not a better writer than f. scott fitzgerald. you are not a b (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 21:09 (thirteen years ago)

Feel like the Bone Thugs rip is one of several overt '90s homages on the album. I also get a major Teddy Riley vibe from some of the ballads.

Evan R, Wednesday, 22 May 2013 21:19 (thirteen years ago)

i like "new orleans"

gonna come talk shit about this itt once i've listened to it a few more times but yeah, i wanted to belatedly co-sign whoever was causing controversy by suggesting this bangs. really nice.

yeah it's crazy how he can love this bitch, while he says fuck this bitch, while he fucks this bitch

you are not a better writer than f. scott fitzgerald. you are not a b (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 21:59 (thirteen years ago)

i don't know. it's a fine song. i like the melody quite a bit.

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 22 May 2013 22:12 (thirteen years ago)

it's a "sex intelligent remix" self-bite m/l

you are not a better writer than f. scott fitzgerald. you are not a b (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 22:18 (thirteen years ago)

does anyone else feel like a really crucial missing piece of the jigsaw are terius' vocals? like, we all know he isn't the ~greatest singer~ or anything but his heart doesn't seem to be in it half the time, he sings most of the album like he sings demos. like the assholish lyrics of "michael" need a bit of panache to work but he doesn't sound invested in them like he did on eg "sweat it out" or even "florida university" in the past so you're just left with some nice los piano and a narrator you don't like

surprised no one's raving about "too early", i really like that one - the guitar works so well, love the combination of that with the pitch-shifted vox. and "holy love" is getting underrated, there's a drama there that the rest of the album lacks.

"new orleans" is completely unremarkable, it sits there and does absolutely nothing. fine song my ass. the central metaphor does not work on any level.

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 22:25 (thirteen years ago)

I agree actually

Beatrix Kiddo (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 23:36 (thirteen years ago)

FINALLY coming around to "Dope Chick," which totally doesn't need Pusha at all

Beatrix Kiddo (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 23 May 2013 02:36 (thirteen years ago)

dope chick is the only thing i've liked since love king really

i think i might like the title track from the new one, idk i only heard it like once

rap steve gadd (D-40), Thursday, 23 May 2013 06:05 (thirteen years ago)

title track is 10/10 classic one of the top 5 songs of the year so far imo

J0rdan S., Thursday, 23 May 2013 06:25 (thirteen years ago)

So is there a good rip of this somewhere now or did lex just cave in?

longneck, Thursday, 23 May 2013 06:39 (thirteen years ago)

it's ~out there~

MIGUEL 3D: THEY FLY @ U FACE (The Reverend), Thursday, 23 May 2013 07:21 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i found some mp3s that sounded normal (unlike the purportedly 256kb[pbbpb one that was just a youtube rip)

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Thursday, 23 May 2013 07:39 (thirteen years ago)

not sure whats wrong with kevin new orleans is probably the best as far as whats been released

tundra, Thursday, 23 May 2013 09:24 (thirteen years ago)

"4 play" is all about that outro

― tundra, Thursday, May 23, 2013 5:24 AM (3 hours ago)

the last 30 seconds are pretty great when he switches it up but the rest of the song is dream at his misogynist mumblecore worst, it's like all of his worst qualities wrapped into one song

you are not a better writer than f. scott fitzgerald. you are not a b (k3vin k.), Thursday, 23 May 2013 13:07 (thirteen years ago)

anyway i have no idea what kind of weirdo you have to be to prefer that song to "IV play", it seems like a pretty objective opinion to have to me

you are not a better writer than f. scott fitzgerald. you are not a b (k3vin k.), Thursday, 23 May 2013 13:08 (thirteen years ago)

jay is just biting 2 chainz on his verse, right?

you are not a better writer than f. scott fitzgerald. you are not a b (k3vin k.), Thursday, 23 May 2013 13:16 (thirteen years ago)

a few weeks ago i turned on the radio in the middle of jay's bdkmv verse and "ME AND MY SPOUSE" sounded so much like 2 chainz for a second that now i can't unhear the occasional vocal similarity

my mans ray manzarek (some dude), Thursday, 23 May 2013 13:17 (thirteen years ago)

it's sad how imo one of the greatest ever has spent the last several years of his career trendhopping like he has, wish he'd have just a little bit of self-respect

my mans ray manzarek (some dude), Thursday, 23 May 2013 13:21 (thirteen years ago)

the title track is one of the least defensible things here, such a pale imitation of past half-glories
