Another review: http://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2013/05/daft-punk-random-access-memories.html

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 01:21 (thirteen years ago)

that reads like a re-write of pfork's old lukewarm review of discovery, similar critiques, even the decimal point score is about the same

anonanon, Wednesday, 22 May 2013 01:28 (thirteen years ago)

the spoken word Moroder track reminded me of that Belle and Sebastian b-side where the guy talks about meeting Elvis.

Cunga, Wednesday, 22 May 2013 01:29 (thirteen years ago)

I find it offputting when reviews start with namechecking other recent reviews of the same record tbh, hard to get past that.

Statements like these:

Daft Punk fans are famously quick to get mad at Justice or Skrillex for burdening their fans with rock dreams, positioned as a direct affront to dance culture’s anonymity.

(they are?) are also merely backed up by other reviews. I mean, you can write about the new record without referring to Skrillex. Kinda NAGL.

Random ASMR Memories (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 01:33 (thirteen years ago)

The only thing pissing me off about this record now is the vocoders (I know that sounds ridiculous).

archibald brandysnap, Wednesday, 22 May 2013 01:35 (thirteen years ago)

That Paste review is so awful. It's a review that supposes that everyone reading will have heard RAM a few times and how many times do you want to mention Skrillex

insert witticism here (hypehat), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 01:39 (thirteen years ago)

And I have just spotted traces of a Saint-Saëns influence in Motherboard. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

This album is probably the best album. Feel like I should've gotten that bonus track for $40, though.

lost it all for a bag of doja (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 03:11 (thirteen years ago)

I hear a lot of Neil Young in this album in that it costs $40

lost it all for a bag of doja (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 03:13 (thirteen years ago)

There's nothing unique about it but I like this bonus track. Could fit in one of those underwater levels in donkey kong country.

I dont find it particularly Eno-esque though. It kind of continues the soft-prog motiffs found in the album. I think its more related to idk, gilmour, alan parsons, tangerine dream, mike oldfield... Those new agey proggy sounds from the late 70s

Btw, ifk if it was mentioned before but heres the only sample they used.

Moka, Wednesday, 22 May 2013 05:59 (thirteen years ago)

Hello. I've avoided this album and this thread so far, but curiosity got the better of me and I decided to have a quick listen to RAM this morning. My first impressions are:

PLUS POINTS:
Nicely executed take on smooth funk, sort of an update on the Roger Troutman/Zapp sound. It works well for what it is. I like the way it's the anti-Human After All. One was techno as played by a rock band, the other's funk as played by an electro band - or something, I dunno, I haven't quite worked that bit out. It's a total move away from the last album anyway.

MINUS POINTS:
Maybe a bit 'safe' sounding? Could take a few more risks. Could also do with a few more dance tunes. And the vocoders get a bit old after a while. Singing 'Doin' It Right' over and over is beyond parody for DP at this point in their career.

Anyway, I'm enjoying it so far but need to hear the rest of the album properly.

Pingu Unchained (dog latin), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 09:44 (thirteen years ago)

This record has apparently been crafted specifically with me in mind* <3 <3.

I could have saved you 4789 anguished posts if I'd known this sooner.

(*except for the bit with that AnCo dude on vocals, dunno what they were thinking of there. I said Huggy Bear, chaps, not Panda Bear!)

The idea of people heckling GM during his first DJ set bums me out

Beatrix Kiddo (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 11:27 (thirteen years ago)

In other news, so nice to be able to play this in my car now!

i havent listened to the recording yet, but if a dj stops playing music for that long in the middle of a set it is straight trolling, regardless of who you are.

in a room full of people listening to a dj at night there's going to be a few people who don't know who moroder is or that he has a spoken word thing on a new daft punk album

gr8080, Wednesday, 22 May 2013 11:44 (thirteen years ago)

This album reminds me of Tortoise in spots, ie sober/mannered Tortoise

Beatrix Kiddo (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 12:38 (thirteen years ago)

Also: I don't club much (ever) but I take your point

Beatrix Kiddo (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 12:39 (thirteen years ago)

I'm hearing a bit of YMO in the proggy disco bits (and lamenting the fact they ain't on Spotify).
Maybe a smidge of Avalon Roxy in the rhythm section of "Game Of Love" (Ferry as Ur-SadCokeBot?).

Fun record.

mr.raffles, Wednesday, 22 May 2013 12:57 (thirteen years ago)

the first couple of dramatic chords after the monologue in "Contact" sound like they're gonna break into "I Just Died In Your Arms Tonight."

must have been something daryl braithwaite said

Playing the spoken word part of GM's mix now. Doesn't sound much like heckling to me!

mike t-diva, Wednesday, 22 May 2013 14:34 (thirteen years ago)

it wasn't a lot of heckling really but it was easy to pick out individual shouters.
and gr8z is right: it was some indulgent trolly behavior. the thing is that up until then it was basically the best DJ set ever so it was totally forgivable.
"Lost Angeles" was when I lost my shit and everything after that was a blur.

klaus dingeldore's rhinelander monkey keeper father (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 14:52 (thirteen years ago)

i'm listening to it now but still haven't gotten to the spoken word part (just got to "from here to eternity")

the way you described it (including the botched "my name is..." part) just seemed like a classic "great intention, poor execution". almost like a bizzaro-world nightclub scene from an early season of The Office where no one (moroder or the hecklers) is being an outright asshole but you just feel awkward and depressed about the whole situation

yaaah i thought this. 'motherboard' is v tortoise. whenever the record's not being disco it's being post-rock. suits them.

the bitcoin comic (thomp), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 15:15 (thirteen years ago)

that then was the famous "Love to Love You Baby." no no sorry sorry, "I Feel Love"!

A robot would never have fucked that up, wth Giorgio

dschinghis kraan (NickB), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 15:24 (thirteen years ago)

'Motherboard' is probably the most Sebastian Tellier moments on the album (it reminds me quite a bit of La Ritournelle actually) but if you guys want to hear Tortoise then that sort of okay maybe.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 22 May 2013 15:24 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, he'd have done better working from a script at that point - nice and crisp and on-point, rather than doddery and botched. Still, WHAT a set. And how appropriate that the RBMA site started auto-playing this straight afterwards: http://www.rbmaradio.com/shows/nile-rodgers-fireside-chat (very very good indeed BTW)

mike t-diva, Wednesday, 22 May 2013 15:26 (thirteen years ago)

the drums are like "la ritournelle" for sure. but i find within, beyond, and game of love all quite like tellier on sexuality.

almost like a bizzaro-world nightclub scene from an early season of The Office where no one (moroder or the hecklers) is being an outright asshole but you just feel awkward and depressed about the whole situation

really feel the need to stress that the "talk" was maybe four minutes of an hour+ set and did not detract notably from the experience because it was really a tack on to the set. Two days later, this stays in my head as what's likely gonna be among the best shows i see this year.

klaus dingeldore's rhinelander monkey keeper father (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 15:33 (thirteen years ago)

haha ok i just got to the spoken word part, its more cute than embarrassing

he'd have done better to script it and keep it shorter but yeah sounds like a fun party regardless, jealous you got to be there forks

gr8080, Wednesday, 22 May 2013 16:16 (thirteen years ago)

he was very cute up there in his button up shirt and grampa stylings; total victory lap
i imagine he'll get onto the festival circuit now and basically do this set all over so you may get a chance to see it soon

klaus dingeldore's rhinelander monkey keeper father (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 16:20 (thirteen years ago)

why are people even reading reviews of this? surely you are setting yourself up for disappointment

^^ that's awesome.

This is p funny. RAM is the number one album in nearly ever country in the world right now: http://www.apple.com/euro/itunes/charts/top10albums.html

Except for Holland where the album of the Eurovision contendant trumps it.

maybe i shouldn't be surprised, but...this is surprising? i guess most itunes buyers are demographically inclined to be daft punk fans, but still.
