I just accidentally called my local record store while trying to look up their hours during a meeting and bought the last copy of this to avoid saying "I accidentally called you"

that reads like a re-write of pfork's old lukewarm review of discovery, similar critiques, even the decimal point score is about the same

the spoken word Moroder track reminded me of that Belle and Sebastian b-side where the guy talks about meeting Elvis.

I find it offputting when reviews start with namechecking other recent reviews of the same record tbh, hard to get past that.

Statements like these:

(they are?) are also merely backed up by other reviews. I mean, you can write about the new record without referring to Skrillex. Kinda NAGL.

The only thing pissing me off about this record now is the vocoders (I know that sounds ridiculous).

That Paste review is so awful. It's a review that supposes that everyone reading will have heard RAM a few times and how many times do you want to mention Skrillex

And I have just spotted traces of a Saint-Saëns influence in Motherboard. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

This album is probably the best album. Feel like I should've gotten that bonus track for $40, though.

I hear a lot of Neil Young in this album in that it costs $40

There's nothing unique about it but I like this bonus track. Could fit in one of those underwater levels in donkey kong country.

I dont find it particularly Eno-esque though. It kind of continues the soft-prog motiffs found in the album. I think its more related to idk, gilmour, alan parsons, tangerine dream, mike oldfield... Those new agey proggy sounds from the late 70s

Hello. I've avoided this album and this thread so far, but curiosity got the better of me and I decided to have a quick listen to RAM this morning. My first impressions are:

PLUS POINTS:
Nicely executed take on smooth funk, sort of an update on the Roger Troutman/Zapp sound. It works well for what it is. I like the way it's the anti-Human After All. One was techno as played by a rock band, the other's funk as played by an electro band - or something, I dunno, I haven't quite worked that bit out. It's a total move away from the last album anyway.

MINUS POINTS:
Maybe a bit 'safe' sounding? Could take a few more risks. Could also do with a few more dance tunes. And the vocoders get a bit old after a while. Singing 'Doin' It Right' over and over is beyond parody for DP at this point in their career.

Anyway, I'm enjoying it so far but need to hear the rest of the album properly.

This record has apparently been crafted specifically with me in mind* <3 <3.

(*except for the bit with that AnCo dude on vocals, dunno what they were thinking of there. I said Huggy Bear, chaps, not Panda Bear!)

i havent listened to the recording yet, but if a dj stops playing music for that long in the middle of a set it is straight trolling, regardless of who you are.

in a room full of people listening to a dj at night there's going to be a few people who don't know who moroder is or that he has a spoken word thing on a new daft punk album

I'm hearing a bit of YMO in the proggy disco bits (and lamenting the fact they ain't on Spotify).
Maybe a smidge of Avalon Roxy in the rhythm section of "Game Of Love" (Ferry as Ur-SadCokeBot?).

Fun record.

the first couple of dramatic chords after the monologue in "Contact" sound like they're gonna break into "I Just Died In Your Arms Tonight."

Playing the spoken word part of GM's mix now. Doesn't sound much like heckling to me!

it wasn't a lot of heckling really but it was easy to pick out individual shouters.
and gr8z is right: it was some indulgent trolly behavior. the thing is that up until then it was basically the best DJ set ever so it was totally forgivable.
"Lost Angeles" was when I lost my shit and everything after that was a blur.

i'm listening to it now but still haven't gotten to the spoken word part (just got to "from here to eternity")

the way you described it (including the botched "my name is..." part) just seemed like a classic "great intention, poor execution". almost like a bizzaro-world nightclub scene from an early season of The Office where no one (moroder or the hecklers) is being an outright asshole but you just feel awkward and depressed about the whole situation

'Motherboard' is probably the most Sebastian Tellier moments on the album (it reminds me quite a bit of La Ritournelle actually) but if you guys want to hear Tortoise then that sort of okay maybe.

Yeah, he'd have done better working from a script at that point - nice and crisp and on-point, rather than doddery and botched. Still, WHAT a set.
