andy k, thumbs up, thumbs down?
― rap steve gadd (D-40), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 14:05 (thirteen years ago)
way too much of the stuff i hated about "love king" here -- aimless half-sung ballads, lower-register mumblecore -- and too little of the bright, hooky stuff that makes him good.
i don't know how anyone could end the album with "slow it down" and not think it's the most enjoyable thing here
― you are not a better writer than f. scott fitzgerald. you are not a b (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 14:14 (thirteen years ago)
Either neither or down.
Certainly not up.
xpost
― Andy K, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 14:15 (thirteen years ago)
It's true that there's not a lot of the bright, hooky stuff, but I think the storyline here is that he's getting better at the other sounds. He's trying a lot of new things on this record, and a lot of them work really well. I like that he's trying to advance his sound instead of just relive past glories.
― Evan R, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 14:22 (thirteen years ago)
the song with kelly sounded good on the tonight show last night. or at least she sounded good.
― yeeznuts (some dude), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 14:24 (thirteen years ago)
Who is McKinney?
Not... CYNTHIA McKinney?!? Lol
― Beatrix Kiddo (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 15:02 (thirteen years ago)
kevin's being a bit fatalistic
there's some stuff on here that's not very good but "IV play"/"equestrian"/"where have you been"/"too early"/"michael" stand up with mostly anything off his three other albums
i need to listen more to everything else after michael tho
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 21 May 2013 15:19 (thirteen years ago)
mckinney is los da mystro, one of dream's longtime co-producers
― you are not a better writer than f. scott fitzgerald. you are not a b (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 15:20 (thirteen years ago)
"mostly everything!" who are you?!
lol
― johnny crunch, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 15:21 (thirteen years ago)
also again it really sucks that the original beyonce track got cut from this, it would be like pulling "fancy" off love vs money or something

those songs are great and could be dropped into any of the other three albums and no one would bat an eye

I really wish I had remained ignorant about this
― Number None, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 15:23 (thirteen years ago)
now that we're talking about LOS tho i guess this sort of fits into what you guys were discussing on the goon thread (i think) a while ago - the decline of the performer-producer relationship and the increased reliance on fad producers and guests. obviously terius has always had a hand in his own productions but his gradual drifting away from tricky and los does coincide with an appreciable drop in quality
― you are not a better writer than f. scott fitzgerald. you are not a b (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 15:25 (thirteen years ago)
yeah definitely. gradually hearing the difference between tricky and los and how they each played off the songwriting is a huge part of the pleasure of those albums for me. he's a lot mushier and less detailed a producer.
― goole, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 16:07 (thirteen years ago)
hmm can someone let the thread know when this leaks in decent quality? i'm not listening to a vevo stream of terius of all people, i may be sceptical but i at least want to give him a chance to shine
― flamenco drop (lex pretend), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 16:15 (thirteen years ago)
like, i don't know how you can be a dream stan not just totally adore "michael" or "IV play" or "equestrian"
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 21 May 2013 16:32 (thirteen years ago)
the little outro on michael is so classic terius -- "dirty diana, hop up in this phantom..."
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 21 May 2013 16:33 (thirteen years ago)
Holding out for a decent rip over here. Don't want to ruin the first impression.
― longneck, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 17:05 (thirteen years ago)
longneck and i as one on terius at last
― flamenco drop (lex pretend), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 17:28 (thirteen years ago)
longneck will love this
― you are not a better writer than f. scott fitzgerald. you are not a b (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 18:15 (thirteen years ago)
the vevos sound fine btw
Yeah it's not too bad tbf but more power to you holding out.
Equestrian was really lame to me.
― Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 18:37 (thirteen years ago)
"turnt" is great and also puts in relief the failures of "high art" and "pussy"
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 18:54 (thirteen years ago)
glad that pussy got put in relief
― 乒乓, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 18:55 (thirteen years ago)
really enjoying this still
i'd probably find 1977 extremely leaden if i listened to it after this
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 18:55 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah, mercifully this positions 1977 as an outlier, not the beginning of an irreversible slide
― Evan R, Tuesday, 21 May 2013 19:03 (thirteen years ago)
man i'm all "the horns in 'loving you' are incredible" and then it immediately shifts into this kinda dull glitchy section :\

holy love is really nice
― johnny crunch, Wednesday, 22 May 2013 03:42 (thirteen years ago)
heh i thought that was the worst song on the album
― you are not a better writer than f. scott fitzgerald. you are not a b (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 03:45 (thirteen years ago)
My stream of this expired over the weekend, and I can't wait to hear it again. Probably going to buy the deluxe edition on Tuesday; I think it will be the first time I've bought a deluxe edition of an album since Love King
― Evan R, Wednesday, 22 May 2013 03:53 (thirteen years ago)
That's like the scourge of crit-Dom now, the expiring stream
― Beatrix Kiddo (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 03:57 (thirteen years ago)
if only his label would put a stream of the album up
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 22 May 2013 03:57 (thirteen years ago)

this is... quite good.... actually. would happily go so far (so very, very far) as to rate it above love king i think
trashy but persuasively consistent about it. feels more like just an honest skeezy dude dealwithit.gif and not so much the repetitious and crassly lumpen barrel-scrapings of a former poet
i mean like "maybe put my dick on it / over the weekend" has gotta be some sort of genius right
― r|t|c, Wednesday, 22 May 2013 13:55 (thirteen years ago)
last few trax are pretty weaksauce though
― r|t|c, Wednesday, 22 May 2013 13:56 (thirteen years ago)
"self-conscious" is pretty dope i think, as far as the final few tracks go
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 22 May 2013 13:59 (thirteen years ago)
yeah more so as a tranche than individually i guess
― r|t|c, Wednesday, 22 May 2013 14:04 (thirteen years ago)
i guess we're just looking at opposite sides of the same coin - to me it seems he's got nothing left to say, which is fine when he falls back to those exercises in terius-dom that made me like him originally ("iv play", "slow it down") but when he rehashes his most amelodic, aimless material from LK i just can't deal with it.
― you are not a better writer than f. scott fitzgerald. you are not a b (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 14:10 (thirteen years ago)
on one listen my reaction is pretty much "pleasant and mild surprise that it's not as bad as i thought it would be (except when it is)" - felt like every so often there were flashes of new ideas but rarely followed through, the skeeziness enables terius not to fall on his face but there weren't very many real highs? i mean no matter what you think of love king it has "sex intelligent" and "yamaha"
― flamenco drop (lex pretend), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 14:14 (thirteen years ago)
"michael" is nice but there's a palpable lack of vitality there, like compare it to "take u home to my mama" for instance
― you are not a better writer than f. scott fitzgerald. you are not a b (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 14:16 (thirteen years ago)
still can't believe rtc turns his nose up at "slow it down"
― you are not a better writer than f. scott fitzgerald. you are not a b (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 14:20 (thirteen years ago)
i think "too early" was the stand-out on first listen for me, "turnt" was fun in a generic way (as is "high art", vaguely)
"pussy" and "equestrian" were terrrrible, "michael" drifted past rather, "loving you/crazy" had a few nice sounds but compared to all his big epics previously it's just inadequate
― flamenco drop (lex pretend), Wednesday, 22 May 2013 14:22 (thirteen years ago)
yeah "loving you/crazy" is just a complete stinkbomb, i take back everything i said about "abyss"
