the second half of this album is heaps better than the first, even if the best individual songs are spread across the playlist. i really really hate listening to that two minutes of old man dialogue every

single

time i play this album

umair coque (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 18 May 2013 08:27 (thirteen years ago)

yes i know it's not just any old man, not the point

umair coque (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 18 May 2013 08:27 (thirteen years ago)

that's kinda condescending

Agreed. But reading some of the kneejerk one-liners about this record doesn't fill you with confidence.

Not so much here as in the wider world.

... (LocalGarda), Saturday, 18 May 2013 08:34 (thirteen years ago)

I played several songs off this at my bar tonight and the general consensus was that this is the first dp album that every song is enjoyable.

This kind of surprises me, makes me think that Kid A is an interesting comparison (have we done this already?) in terms of a mass-appeal group pointedly not giving their fans what they want and still managing to take a lot of the fans with them. 95% of people have not been spending the past decade learning to enjoy yacht rock, it must all be a bit sudden for them.

"Touch" might be my #1 track of the year at this point.

shantalla (seandalai), Saturday, 18 May 2013 11:10 (thirteen years ago)

I imagine that most of the hate for this album will come from the 18-21 club demographic in the US. Considering that EDM manages to take the most annoying elements of all my favorite genres of dance music and turn them up to 11, well I hope they enjoy the tinnitus.

I hated big swathes of Homework and Discovery when I was 16, maybe some of them will grow out of it.

Josiah Alan, Saturday, 18 May 2013 11:42 (thirteen years ago)

I can totally understand people not liking this album. But hating it? That sort of negative reaction is nuclear, like dropping a bomb on this record but watching the fireball engulf miles of stuff around it.

Am I the only one who thinks "We Are Family" whenever "Get Lucky" begins? I mean, whoever upthread said there is nothing exactly like it is pedantically correct, but there is plenty of disco like it. I listen to "Get Lucky" as a belated b-side, or "Part 2" single. Though I suppose "We are family, up all night to get lucky" is kind of gross, if you loosen the metaphor even a little bit.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 18 May 2013 12:15 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah but "We are Family" doesn't have a vocoder lift-off section.

shantalla (seandalai), Saturday, 18 May 2013 12:17 (thirteen years ago)

I'm sure it would have if would have if Sister Sledge couldn't sing.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 18 May 2013 12:19 (thirteen years ago)

Listening to the Daft Punk is a nice reminder that Chic was more than just full-throttle disco. There's a real soundtracky, Air-y vibe to this:

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 18 May 2013 12:21 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah everything Chic did that wasn't a huge hit is slept on gold.

Popture, Saturday, 18 May 2013 12:24 (thirteen years ago)

And the non music obsessives I've polled love this record.

Popture, Saturday, 18 May 2013 12:25 (thirteen years ago)

Random Access Memories needs more flute solos

Another slow temp jam:

People may or may not love the Daft Punk, but I bet a plurality would be satisfied with nothing but Chic and Steely Dan clips.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 18 May 2013 12:45 (thirteen years ago)

Cool! I picked up that Ottawan rec Scott posted upthread in London last month (7") for a pound. Had no idea it was Thomas B's dad behind it. Like it loads more than anything on RAM, which fails to move me. I've tried.

That elusive North American wood-ape (Capitaine Jay Vee), Saturday, 18 May 2013 13:33 (thirteen years ago)

I've had the hook from the Julian Casablancas track stuck in my head for 3 days, this is... unexpected.

And a little annoying considering that it's impossible to sing it to myself.

Josiah Alan, Saturday, 18 May 2013 13:45 (thirteen years ago)

Get Lucky always makes me think of Oooh What a Life! by The Gibson Brothers

the Shearer of simulated snowsex etc. (Dwight Yorke), Saturday, 18 May 2013 14:14 (thirteen years ago)

as to why daft punk streamed this album on itunes...

Pre-orders for the album have been strong, sources say, with volume picking up noticeably after the iTunes Store began streaming the album on Monday, May 13.

J0rdan S., Saturday, 18 May 2013 15:37 (thirteen years ago)

I guess Kanye was taking notes on the PR campaign...

https://soundcloud.com/mixdeluxepro/2013-05-18-todd-edwards

Todd Edwards essential mix featuring several songs off RAM + Discovery + Chic + Moroder tracks.

Moka, Saturday, 18 May 2013 16:57 (thirteen years ago)

I'm kind of amazed at Todd Edwards singing voice when his interview voice sounds so lazy and nasal.

Moka, Saturday, 18 May 2013 17:06 (thirteen years ago)

you should hear linda ronstadt talk! sounds like lily tomlin as ernestine the telephone operator.

scott seward, Saturday, 18 May 2013 17:17 (thirteen years ago)

finally listening to this, pretty mellow so far, I'm surprised by the extreme negative reactions since it seems pretty laid back. Maybe the crazier songs come later on. Seems to flow pretty nicely.

Moodles, Saturday, 18 May 2013 17:18 (thirteen years ago)

its a pleasant listen. take a bubble bath and put it on. light some candles. read french poetry.

scott seward, Saturday, 18 May 2013 17:20 (thirteen years ago)

how did you know about my listening routine? spy cam?

Moodles, Saturday, 18 May 2013 17:29 (thirteen years ago)

I thought the extreme negative reactions were due to it being pretty laid back.

MarkoP, Saturday, 18 May 2013 17:32 (thirteen years ago)

The best cover of Get Lucky so far

MarkoP, Saturday, 18 May 2013 17:46 (thirteen years ago)

negative reactions probably a combination of kneejerk countermeasures to positivity and also it being the worst album since kaputt

christmas candy bar (al leong), Saturday, 18 May 2013 18:59 (thirteen years ago)

at last a Get Lucky video has dropped.

ḉrut (crüt), Saturday, 18 May 2013 19:32 (thirteen years ago)

Man get a load of their jackets!

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 18 May 2013 19:46 (thirteen years ago)

So you admit you're just trolling because there's too many people who like it? xxpost

StanM, Saturday, 18 May 2013 20:12 (thirteen years ago)

Facebook friend just copped to singing back-up on "Touched" and a few other tracks -- she doesn't know what made the cut. Years and years ago she was Ashley Tisdale's singing voice in the "High School Musical" series so, idk, I'll connect the dots on that at 3AM.

Cunga, Saturday, 18 May 2013 22:32 (thirteen years ago)

gr8080, Saturday, 18 May 2013 22:49 (thirteen years ago)

乒乓, Saturday, 18 May 2013 22:51 (thirteen years ago)

my mom's not a pop music person at all but she'd heard a little of the buzz about RAM so i put it on for her-- she really likes "within"

gr8080, Saturday, 18 May 2013 23:00 (thirteen years ago)

you've given me too much to feel

ḉrut (crüt), Saturday, 18 May 2013 23:07 (thirteen years ago)

I noticed pharrell's little "guitar!" on lose yourself to dance for the first time

gr8080, Saturday, 18 May 2013 23:20 (thirteen years ago)

when pharrell yells 'guitar!' in LYTD

P is for Poo Poo Doo Doo (Sufjan Grafton), Sunday, 19 May 2013 00:09 (thirteen years ago)

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 19 May 2013 00:10 (thirteen years ago)

And stream still up on iTunes as I just tested it this very second.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 19 May 2013 00:11 (thirteen years ago)

P is for Poo Poo Doo Doo (Sufjan Grafton), Sunday, 19 May 2013 00:13 (thirteen years ago)

I wonder what the theory was not having the stream available on iPhones.

Naive Teen Idol, Sunday, 19 May 2013 00:25 (thirteen years ago)

Oh shit this is why ^

P is for Poo Poo Doo Doo (Sufjan Grafton), Sunday, 19 May 2013 00:31 (thirteen years ago)

The theory was probably I am sweating buying this on vinyl bc everyone is talking about it and I cannot hear it on my usual channels

P is for Poo Poo Doo Doo (Sufjan Grafton), Sunday, 19 May 2013 00:32 (thirteen years ago)

Thanking naive. Felt like I was taking crazy pills, etc.
