Because it all started with that awful phenomenon of exclusive one time listening sessions for some journalists, way before the release date (or leak for that matter). they all wanted to crank out copy as fast as they could.

these listening sessions are the death of music journalism. no value to the listener, no value in it for the writer, just adding to the hype.

and because all these journalists already wrote their track-by-track reviews after only having heard it once, in an office building somewhere with 20 colleagues, they can't write another proper review of it.

(i know of one Dutch journalist, former ilxor, that asked the rec co to listen to get another listen, alone, on headphones, and they granted it)

All the reviews I've seen so far read like the reactions of people who have been locked in a room with no music for years, and this is the first thing they've heard since the door shut. OHMYGODI"MSHITTINGMYSELFTHIS IS SOOOOOOOOOOGOOD IVE NEVER HEARD ANYTHING LIKE IT EVERY BEFORE AND EVEN IF I HAD THIS WOULD BE BETTER THAN THAT BECAUSE IT IS SOOOOOOOOOGOOOOD!

it's funny that JT was used as a comparison point because this week felt EXACTLY like the JT week in terms of one album dominating the discourse on a wave of hype - but i haven't seen any talk of the JT album since about a week post-release, let alone any considered opinions.

Agree that the reviews I really want to read won't be written yet, or maybe not written at all. There's so much to take in that one-listen reviews read like bad school book reports: this happened, then this happened, then this happened…

gaucho suits my desultory disposition more than aja but i'm not sure it's better

there are many tracks on this that are addictive, and that i find myself wishing i could listen to when i am away from my computer. one of these is "touch."

this thread has convinced me to give steely dan "another chance." i don't really know anything about them.

i listen to gaucho way more than aja too, the melodies are so much lusher. here come those santa ana winds again...

While I'm not entirely sure I that I completely agree with the Gaucho comparisons, I will say that they suit this album more than when people were comparing Destroyer's Kaputt to it.

Steely Dan newbies should not start with "Aja" or "Gaucho." Go with "The Royal Scam." Or "Countdown to Ecstasy." People who are comparing this to Steely Dan are nuts.

off of aja, go with 'peg' or 'deacon blues' - they both have pop cores

Steely Dan lyrics are absolutely awesome and acid and essential, but DP's lyrics not so much.

aja is a perfect place to start cuz its kinda perfect.

I'm a 42 year old who seems to be vaguely unique in being generally 'yeah I guess' regarding Steely Dan in that I have everything, can hum most of the tunes and haven't actively listened them in about two decades. Agreed. My mom made damn sure I was raised a sad loser dude. Steely Dan, Michael McDonald/Doobies, Boz Scaggs, Hall & Oates, and the whole range of smooth pop were in heavy rotation on her car radio.
