backing vox on Doin' It Right sounds like a Roland VP-330 Vocoder+ Mk1.

The drums on this a fucking incredible. I mean, who taught them how to mic drums like this? Damn.

Popture, Friday, 17 May 2013 04:28 (thirteen years ago)

Giorgio.

Treeship, Friday, 17 May 2013 04:29 (thirteen years ago)

i don't hear Steely Dan or Doobies on Game Of Love, I hear Plush!

Plush, y'know, Liam Hayes. He also got a bunch of old crafty session guys to crank out some coked out 70s-styled jams across a few overproduced expensive studio shipwrecks of albums in the 90s/00s.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Friday, 17 May 2013 04:31 (thirteen years ago)

oh man, plush. haven't heard that name in a while. he was the darling of chicago music critics for a spell, but I always found his music unlistenably bad.

flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Friday, 17 May 2013 04:45 (thirteen years ago)

Just went and bought the vinyl from a shop (like in the olden days) It looks so beautiful. Shame the download code doesn't seem to work, the website keeps saying site not found.

Kitchen Person, Friday, 17 May 2013 05:06 (thirteen years ago)

Parts of Giorgio in the middle/2nd half remind of... Tortoise! lol, there's some weird 12" that it sounds like... Gamera maybe? That fusion bass with the dual drum jam sesh, yikes.

― Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli)

Actually was thinking that Motherboard reminded me of Tortoise... or something from WARP only more... acoustic.

Moka, Friday, 17 May 2013 05:13 (thirteen years ago)

Phillip Glass too

Moka, Friday, 17 May 2013 05:15 (thirteen years ago)

I cant really put my finger on which Warp artist it reminds of, though. Boards of Canada?

Moka, Friday, 17 May 2013 05:16 (thirteen years ago)

I think you're right Moka, I may have the tracks mixed up.

Australia’s Cotton Capital Wee Waa, population 1600, is currently experiencing a rush of music fans from around the nation, as they ready for the world launch of the most anticipated album of 2013.

We've rounded up the President of the Wee Waa Show Society, Brett Dickinson to explain why the French electro duo chose Wee Waa for their global album launch and to tell us more about the annual agricultural event.

“It was organised through Daft Punk’s management,” says Dickinson. “They were looking at towns of a certain size and Wee Waa was on the list and they rang council and spoke to somebody there and they came up and had a look. They thought it was fantastic and it’s gone from there.

“Everyone is so excited, they just can’t believe it, like everyone else. They can’t believe it’s happening. ‘Is it true?’ ‘Yes, it’s true. It’s in all the papers.”

As with anything Daft Punk related, the details are sketchy, but while Dickinson implied Daft Punk will not be attending he did confirm they wouldn't be performing the sold-out launch. Rather the album would be played in full tonight with accompanying visuals.

“They’ve got something else on at the time but the album launch will take place in Australia and then elsewhere around the world as the sun comes up. Because Australia gets that date first they’ve chosen us to launch the album.

But what happens once you’ve made the epic trek to Wee Waa for this launch? Surely, you’re not just going to head home? Or perhaps you don’t give a toss about Daft Punk or their electro beats. Then what?

Dickinson assures us they will have plenty to keep you entertained – Daft Punk fan or not.

Nationals Senator Fiona Nash will open the show on Friday and there will be showgirls, fireworks displays, wood chopping and cross cut saw competitions and a Wee Waa Has Talent competition, to name but a few attractions.

“Then there’s the usual events,” adds Dickinson. “We’ve got the baking, cut flowers and vegetables, all the usual things that are in the Pavilion and lots of cattle and horses and sheep.”

And if you thought hearing Random Access Memories in a field in country NSW was enough of an event, then you’d be dead wrong. They’ve also got motorbike stunt rider David Russell jumping over a helicopter on the same night.

The Wee Waa Show runs from today 'til Sunday. Daft Punk will 'premiere' Random Access Memories tonight.

why does Kanye say he was based on the novel "Push" by Sapphire? (sic), Friday, 17 May 2013 05:55 (thirteen years ago)

Because Australia gets that date first

lol

On course to be fastest selling album in UK ever: http://www.factmag.com/2013/05/17/daft-punk-predicted-to-have-fastest-selling-album-in-uk-history/

groovypanda, Friday, 17 May 2013 08:06 (thirteen years ago)

Holding off on buying this until copies start showing up in their millions in charity shops.

dschinghis kraan (NickB), Friday, 17 May 2013 08:14 (thirteen years ago)

From that POV, it'll be the new Speakerboxx/Love Below

dschinghis kraan (NickB), Friday, 17 May 2013 08:14 (thirteen years ago)

Because it all started with that awful phenomenon of exclusive one time listening sessions for some journalists, way before the release date (or leak for that matter). they all wanted to crank out copy as fast as they could.

these listening sessions are the death of music journalism. no value to the listener, no value in it for the writer, just adding to the hype.

and because all these journalists already wrote their track-by-track reviews after only having heard it once, in an office building somewhere with 20 colleagues, they can't write another proper review of it.

(i know of one Dutch journalist, former ilxor, that asked the rec co to listen to get another listen, alone, on headphones, and they granted it)

― Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, May 16, 2013 10:06 PM (Yesterday) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

All the reviews I've seen so far read like the reactions of people who have been locked in a room with no music for years, and this is the first thing they've heard since the door shut. OHMYGODI"MSHITTINGMYSELFTHIS IS SOOOOOOOOOOGOOD IVE NEVER HEARD ANYTHING LIKE IT EVERY BEFORE AND EVEN IF I HAD THIS WOULD BE BETTER THAN THAT BECAUSE IT IS SOOOOOOOOOGOOOOD!

Tune in next week when another album is released.

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Friday, 17 May 2013 08:41 (thirteen years ago)

it's funny that JT was used as a comparison point because this week felt EXACTLY like the JT week in terms of one album dominating the discourse on a wave of hype - but i haven't seen any talk of the JT album since about a week post-release, let alone any considered opinions.

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Friday, 17 May 2013 08:49 (thirteen years ago)

Agree that the reviews I really want to read won't be written yet, or maybe not written at all. There's so much to take in that one-listen reviews read like bad school book reports: this happened, then this happened, then this happened…

fuck me the cd sounds 10000000000000000000 better than the rips floating around on the net

because its a sample of that^

gr8080, Friday, 17 May 2013 11:47 (thirteen years ago)

dabears17x trolling hard in the comments of that Sherbs vid

groovypanda, Friday, 17 May 2013 11:48 (thirteen years ago)

It's the only reasonable explanation though - these Australians must have had a leak of this Daft Punk album in 1981.

StanM, Friday, 17 May 2013 12:04 (thirteen years ago)

dp invent time machine in order to correct the errors of human after all. unfortunately, their calculations are a little off.

i listen to gaucho way more than aja

― gr8080, Thursday, May 16, 2013 11:08 PM (

otm. The title track is itself more awesome than Aja.

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 17 May 2013 12:53 (thirteen years ago)

I've only just discovered the wonder of Aja; having difficulty believing there might be things better.

would be awesome, cuz the vinyl rip flac is 10000000000000000000 better than the itunes stream.

more than 10 deep on this album. still liking it more every time through. started to get a bit *emotional* while listening to "instant crush" a few minutes ago.

touch...sweet touch...

The Pastiche Liberation Front (sonnyboy), Friday, 17 May 2013 13:30 (thirteen years ago)

I remember touch.

Not Simone Choule (Eric H.), Friday, 17 May 2013 13:31 (thirteen years ago)

gaucho suits my desultory disposition more than aja but i'm not sure it's better

gr8080, Friday, 17 May 2013 13:32 (thirteen years ago)

there are many tracks on this that are addictive, and that i find myself wishing i could listen to when i am away from my computer. one of these is "touch."

Treeship, Friday, 17 May 2013 13:32 (thirteen years ago)

this thread has convinced me to give steely dan "another chance." i don't really know anything about them.

Treeship, Friday, 17 May 2013 13:33 (thirteen years ago)

i listen to gaucho way more than aja too, the melodies are so much lusher. here come those santa ana winds again...

乒乓, Friday, 17 May 2013 13:37 (thirteen years ago)

The fast middle section of "Touch" reminds me so much of...

"I know you don't get a chance to take a break this often" is so perfect

Crackle Box, Friday, 17 May 2013 14:04 (thirteen years ago)

gives me "if i was your girlfriend" vibes or something, very prince

Crackle Box, Friday, 17 May 2013 14:05 (thirteen years ago)

While I'm not entirely sure I that I completely agree with the Gaucho comparisons, I will say that they suit this album more than when people were comparing Destroyer's Kaputt to it.

gr8080, Friday, 17 May 2013 14:24 (thirteen years ago)

Steely Dan newbies should not start with "Aja" or "Gaucho." Go with "The Royal Scam." Or "Countdown to Ecstasy." People who are comparing this to Steely Dan are nuts.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 17 May 2013 14:33 (thirteen years ago)

i started with aja

乒乓, Friday, 17 May 2013 14:33 (thirteen years ago)

off of aja, go with 'peg' or 'deacon blues' - they both have pop cores

乒乓, Friday, 17 May 2013 14:33 (thirteen years ago)

Steely Dan lyrics are absolutely awesome and acid and essential, but DP's lyrics not so much.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 17 May 2013 14:34 (thirteen years ago)

aja is a perfect place to start cuz its kinda perfect.

scott seward, Friday, 17 May 2013 14:37 (thirteen years ago)

i think we're just talking about steely dan because one song on this kind of sort of has a gaucho/aja vibe, that's all

also ilx likes steely dan a lot

gr8080, Friday, 17 May 2013 14:38 (thirteen years ago)

sad loser dude dan fandom ideally kicks in around ages 25 to 30. if you are younger wait awhile and listen to pissed jeans or fucked up or eat skull or something. theoretically, you still have something to live for.
