Daft Punk's Random Access Memories

This album continues to make me yearn for Steely Dan's Aja and Gaucho ~ which is a very good thing. I can't point at individual songs, it's a ~feeling~.

But maybe he hadn't actually heard the album at that point and assumed that the album was more on the funky disco side of things.

So is the pr campagne broken off now? We've not seen a video with Julian Casablancas yet. Did they decide to leave it after the album leaked?

Yeah "Touch" is my favourite track on this. Possibly the only case where it feels they're doing something new.

Whoever it was upthread that suggested the spectre of Steely Dan all over this album, I'm convinced that's the right answer. Can't not hear this as their Gaucho now. Which means I now love it and will probably hardly ever listen to it.

I'm that weird guy that's listened to Gaucho more than Aja. This doesn't have enough backing singers to be Gaucho though.

Something about the drumming is very similar though, sounds like money.

The Game Of Love is a total Mirage-era Christine McVie jammer. Wish they got her to guest instead of the vocoded vox.

Parts of Giorgio in the middle/2nd half remind of... Tortoise! lol, there's some weird 12" that it sounds like... Gamera maybe? That fusion bass with the dual drum jam sesh, yikes.

Plush, y'know, Liam Hayes. He also got a bunch of old crafty session guys to crank out some coked out 70s-styled jams across a few overproduced expensive studio shipwrecks of albums in the 90s/00s.

oh man, plush. haven't heard that name in a while. he was the darling of chicago music critics for a spell, but I always found his music unlistenably bad.

Just went and bought the vinyl from a shop (like in the olden days) It looks so beautiful. Shame the download code doesn't seem to work, the website keeps saying site not found.

Australia’s Cotton Capital Wee Waa, population 1600, is currently experiencing a rush of music fans from around the nation, as they ready for the world launch of the most anticipated album of 2013.

We've rounded up the President of the Wee Waa Show Society, Brett Dickinson to explain why the French electro duo chose Wee Waa for their global album launch and to tell us more about the annual agricultural event.

“It was organised through Daft Punk’s management,” says Dickinson. “They were looking at towns of a certain size and Wee Waa was on the list and they rang council and spoke to somebody there and they came up and had a look. They thought it was fantastic and it’s gone from there.

“Everyone is so excited, they just can’t believe it, like everyone else. They can’t believe it’s happening. ‘Is it true?’ ‘Yes, it’s true. It’s in all the papers.”

As with anything Daft Punk related, the details are sketchy, but while Dickinson implied Daft Punk will not be attending he did confirm they wouldn't be performing the sold-out launch. Rather the album would be played in full tonight with accompanying visuals.

“They’ve got something else on at the time but the album launch will take place in Australia and then elsewhere around the world as the sun comes up. Because Australia gets that date first they’ve chosen us to launch the album.

But what happens once you’ve made the epic trek to Wee Waa for this launch? Surely, you’re not just going to head home? Or perhaps you don’t give a toss about Daft Punk or their electro beats. Then what?

Dickinson assures us they will have plenty to keep you entertained – Daft Punk fan or not.

Nationals Senator Fiona Nash will open the show on Friday and there will be showgirls, fireworks displays, wood chopping and cross cut saw competitions and a Wee Waa Has Talent competition, to name but a few attractions.

“Then there’s the usual events,” adds Dickinson. “We’ve got the baking, cut flowers and vegetables, all the usual things that are in the Pavilion and lots of cattle and horses and sheep.”

And if you thought hearing Random Access Memories in a field in country NSW was enough of an event, then you’d be dead wrong. They’ve also got motorbike stunt rider David Russell jumping over a helicopter on the same night.

The Wee Waa Show runs from today 'til Sunday. Daft Punk will 'premiere' Random Access Memories tonight.

Because it all started with that awful phenomenon of exclusive one time listening sessions for some journalists, way before the release date (or leak for that matter). they all wanted to crank out copy as fast as they could.

these listening sessions are the death of music journalism. no value to the listener, no value in it for the writer, just adding to the hype.

and because all these journalists already wrote their track-by-track reviews after only having heard it once, in an office building somewhere with 20 colleagues, they can't write another proper review of it.

(i know of one Dutch journalist, former ilxor, that asked the rec co to listen to get another listen, alone, on headphones, and they granted it)

All the reviews I've seen so far read like the reactions of people who have been locked in a room with no music for years, and this is the first thing they've heard since the door shut. OHMYGODI"MSHITTINGMYSELFTHIS IS SOOOOOOOOOOGOOD IVE NEVER HEARD ANYTHING LIKE IT EVERY BEFORE AND EVEN IF I HAD THIS WOULD BE BETTER THAN THAT BECAUSE IT IS SOOOOOOOOOGOOOOD!

it's funny that JT was used as a comparison point because this week felt EXACTLY like the JT week in terms of one album dominating the discourse on a wave of hype - but i haven't seen any talk of the JT album since about a week post-release, let alone any considered opinions.

Agree that the reviews I really want to read won't be written yet, or maybe not written at all. There's so much to take in that one-listen reviews read like bad school book reports: this happened, then this happened, then this happened…
