well if it's erykah it's just going to (rightfully) be a circlejerk, and there's been plenty of discussion of portishead already so yeah you might be right

THELEX:
...though not with 'robocop' for me, that shit sucks. i mean seriously, ROBOCOP? how the hell did that simile make it past the editing process? and the "spoilt little LA girl" chant is definitely the nadir of something or other ... i get that i'm not supposed to sympathise w/kanye, that the bitterness is part and parcel of his whole experience, and i'm down with that on most of the songs, but the problem with the 'robocop' lyric isn't so much that dude is being a dick as dude is being retarded and using 12-year-old schoolboy similes.
OTMOTMOTM. although i've gotten over my "that's misogyinst!" knee-jerk reaction to kanye's persona(s) on 808s, "robocop" is still a borderline dealbreaker. not necessarily for the attitude, mostly just cuz the central "joke" is so retarded. that people were like, "come on, it's funny!" in defense just boggles. plus, yeah: the "spoiled little LA girl" chant. yikes. the fact that it IS so catchy & celebratory only makes it worse. were it just another throwaway moment, it wouldn't bug me half so much
― contenderizer, Saturday, 14 February 2009 22:07 (seventeen years ago)
^ realize that i said nothing lex didn't already say better
― contenderizer, Saturday, 14 February 2009 22:08 (seventeen years ago)
cant disagree with any of that, it's just a perfect hook. cant stop wont stop loving it
― Jewish Lager (k3vin k.), Saturday, 14 February 2009 22:28 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah, the "spoiled little LA girl" part is the only bit I like aside from the cartoon factory noises. The fact that it's such a direct personal attack when most of Kanye's sniping has been pretty oblique up to that point (either more serious gripes that could be about anybody ("don't say you will unless you will", "why are you so paranoid?") or goofy ad homs ("how could you be so Dr. Evil?", "you movin' like a Robocop"), such a specific, targeted attack on her is like "WHOA, where did THAT come from?"
― The Reverend, Saturday, 14 February 2009 22:45 (seventeen years ago)
Kinda surprised Grace Jones isn't gonna chart now I think of it.
Hurricane was my number vote, but I guess there just wasn't enough buzz around it, despite Bimble's and mine best efforts. I'm glad to see "Williams' Blood" made it in the singles poll, though it was a bit sad that more than half of the votes were given to that Airplane remix. It's not a bad remix at all, but the original tune is one of the most fabulously melodramatic tunes I've heard in ages, and the remix takes a lot of the drama away and leaves the song kinda flat.
― Tuomas, Saturday, 14 February 2009 23:37 (seventeen years ago)
the Grace Jones song I heard from the singles poll sounds like....... Seal
― turnover-friendly doubledribble (The Reverend), Saturday, 14 February 2009 23:52 (seventeen years ago)
Is that a good thing or a bad thing? (For me it would be good.)
― Tuomas, Saturday, 14 February 2009 23:52 (seventeen years ago)
not sure tbh
― turnover-friendly doubledribble (The Reverend), Saturday, 14 February 2009 23:54 (seventeen years ago)
Here's a couple more great tunes from Hurricane:
― Tuomas, Saturday, 14 February 2009 23:55 (seventeen years ago)
(Neither sounds like Seal, I think.)
LOL is there seriously a metal band called 5ive???
― unaustralian (jabba hands), Sunday, 15 February 2009 01:33 (seventeen years ago)
Rather unfortunate name choice... Though maybe they existed before the boyband 5ive?
― Tuomas, Sunday, 15 February 2009 01:50 (seventeen years ago)
I thought there was a lot more buzz on that album than just Tuomas and Bimble. I also think that this is the only Aeroplane remix I would not listen to over the original, and I'm including God only Knows in that.
Also, listening to the recession, and re: Kanye in Put On, the end of that song really promises another verse and chorus right? or is it just me, it fades out during what could be a really great bridge. I'd love another two minutes so that Kanye had a whole half of the track.
― Plaxico (I know, right?), Sunday, 15 February 2009 02:22 (seventeen years ago)
Uh, there already is a great bridge.
― turnover-friendly doubledribble (The Reverend), Sunday, 15 February 2009 02:32 (seventeen years ago)
kanye would be overkill if it was more than one verse (cf "go hard")
― big fatass rick ross (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 15 February 2009 02:33 (seventeen years ago)
tru
― turnover-friendly doubledribble (The Reverend), Sunday, 15 February 2009 02:34 (seventeen years ago)
just listen to the last thirty seconds and tell me it doesn't feel like it could lift off from there.
― Plaxico (I know, right?), Sunday, 15 February 2009 02:44 (seventeen years ago)
it would be emotional overkill i think - the three verses alone are pretty epic

― Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Sunday, 15 February 2009 17:06 (seventeen years ago)
it would have been my #1, had i voted
― caek, Sunday, 15 February 2009 17:07 (seventeen years ago)
Or the post-rock band 5ive Style?
― Bianca Jagger (jaymc), Sunday, 15 February 2009 17:12 (seventeen years ago)
The "metal" 5ive are spacerock as much as anything. They have had some really experimental eps to as well as remixes by Kid 606.
― The User Formerly Known As Pfunkboy Latterly Known as.. (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 15 February 2009 20:10 (seventeen years ago)
The newest album had shorter more accessible songs. The 1st s/t album is heir true masterpiece.

. . . or the Jackson 5ive
― Matos W.K., Sunday, 15 February 2009 20:48 (seventeen years ago)
Whew: caught up with this at last. Fuck me, that was ... intense.
Thoughts, a propos of nothing much:
It's (M83) so eighties I can see why Grimly likes it so much. Not for me though
I'm really not such a fan of this album, though. I mean, I voted for it, and it deserves a high placing, but if you go back and have a look at my hyperbolic gushing about Before The Dawn Heals Us in the 2005 thread, you'll realise "I voted for it, and it deserves a high placing" sounds like some seriously faint praise.
I did think I would be ploughing a lonely furrow with a lot of my choices, and I've been proved right ('cos there's no fucking way they're going to be top 10). Given that this thread has introduced me to one thing of utter awesomeness (School of Seven Bells) and another which I've downloaded and am eagerly anticipating getting to listen to (Grouper), I'm going to try to reciprocate by making a strong case for the hidden gems in mine (or just posting them in bold or something, and putting YOU SHOULD BUY THIS, DUDES after them) when we all come to share our lists at the end of the results next week.
Oh, and the 5ive album is fucking great.

I am really, really loving the Grouper record by the way. In terms of mood it reminds me of White Chalk a bit, that feeling of intimacy but with a creepy, uneasy melodic undercurrent.
― Maximo Park Ji-Sung (Matt DC), Sunday, 15 February 2009 22:48 (seventeen years ago)
For those who missed it here's the Grouper video again

Fits in nicely with the Zombi 2xlp I just played. A bit dancier but goes well with it.
― The User Formerly Known As Pfunkboy Latterly Known as.. (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 15 February 2009 23:23 (seventeen years ago)
Wish I would have voted...Grouper would have been my #1. I still cannot believe how amazing Heavy Water is, even after listening to it at least two hundred times... Thanks Herman for posting again.
― jonathan - stl, Sunday, 15 February 2009 23:39 (seventeen years ago)
^Me too, with Grouper at #1. I doubt many of my other votes would've mattered much except that I probably would have put Atlas Sound at 3 or 4, might've broke the top 50.
― I shall always respect my elders (Z S), Monday, 16 February 2009 00:16 (seventeen years ago)
so did anybody else vote for Fotheringay 2, or am I just weird?
― sleeve, Monday, 16 February 2009 01:56 (seventeen years ago)
Now I'm even more intrigued to hear the Grouper album in full, given this comparison.

the grouper album is great. just picked it up on the weekend.

More on that Gang Gang Dance blaze at the weekend:
TOUR CANCELLED DUE TO FIRE....hello all......very sad news from GGD camp today. We are in Amsterdam after having played the first of what was meant to be 14 shows in Europe and the UK. Last nights show was really great and a big thank you to everyone that came out for it....we had a blast, but unfortunately our morning was a bit tragic. We stored our gear in the club last night and when we arrived there today to pick it up and head off to Brussels for tonights show, we were informed that an electrical fire had occurred in the very room where our stuff was stashed. We didnt really know the scope of how bad the fire was until we arrived on the scene to find every piece of equipment we own scattered out in the parking lot...melted, charred, and still smoldering. Most of our gear is way beyond repair and the small amount of stuff that looks as if it wasnt physically destroyed by the fire itself has all been doused by the firehoses. So we have been left with synths that are melted, a charred guitar, cases full of wet pedals and cables, drums that are nothing but the metal rims, amps that look as if they've been doused in tar...the list goes on. It is really devastating for us as our equipment is very specific and without it we cant do much of anything. Most of our memory cards for our samplers melted so we've lost a bunch of jams that we were really looking forward to playing for you all. While we did entertain the thought of just renting or borrowing a bunch of random gear and somehow continuing the tour and just improvising every night, it just doesn't seem like its going to work out. While it would be fun and we'd love to stick this out for everyone that was excited to see us, we feel like we came to perform a certain set of songs and if we cant do that then its probably best to just come back again when we have the necessary gear to do so. On top of that we are stuck here in Amsterdam until we are able to meet with the insurance company that is dealing with the fire, if we were to leave then we would risk losing out on the compensation that will be necessary for us to build our equipment back up.As i said its all really devastating and we wish nothing more then to be in Brussels tonight (we were super excited about that show!) and to be able to continue on with our tour, but there is really no way for that to happen given the circumstances. We are hoping to come back asap and make up for all this and we really want to thank everyone who bought tickets and everyone who was planning on coming out to the shows on this tour. It looked as if it was going to be one of our best yet thanks to y'all.......See you when the smoke clears. peace and respect------GGD

Musically did say there was strange placings in the top 20. So looks like some big hitters (TVOTR?) might not place and perhaps it wont be Erykah Badu and Portishead as no1 & no2 as we all assumed?
― The User Formerly Known As Pfunkboy Latterly Known as.. (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 16 February 2009 16:41 (seventeen years ago)
