1) james genus! i mostly know his jazz shit, like with dave douglas, had no idea he's in the SNL band.
2) paul jackson jr. is different from the paul jackson who played bass with herbie hancock circa 'thrust', right?

why are there so many track-by-track reviews for this record?
― sigourney wiener (diamonddave85), Thursday, 16 May 2013 20:18 (thirteen years ago)
DP probably reached out to Nick Offerman because they wanted to get Duke Silver to do some sax work on RAM.

Because it all started with that awful phenomenon of exclusive one time listening sessions for some journalists, way before the release date (or leak for that matter). they all wanted to crank out copy as fast as they could.
these listening sessions are the death of music journalism. no value to the listener, no value in it for the writer, just adding to the hype.
and because all these journalists already wrote their track-by-track reviews after only having heard it once, in an office building somewhere with 20 colleagues, they can't write another proper review of it.
(i know of one Dutch journalist, former ilxor, that asked the rec co to listen to get another listen, alone, on headphones, and they granted it)
― Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 16 May 2013 22:06 (thirteen years ago)
All the reviews I've seen so far read like the reactions of people who have been locked in a room with no music for years, and this is the first thing they've heard since the door shut. OHMYGODI"MSHITTINGMYSELFTHIS IS SOOOOOOOOOOGOOD IVE NEVER HEARD ANYTHING LIKE IT EVERY BEFORE AND EVEN IF I HAD THIS WOULD BE BETTER THAN THAT BECAUSE IT IS SOOOOOOOOOGOOOOD!
Tune in next week when another album is released.

its fun to get excited about music
― gr8080, Thursday, 16 May 2013 22:16 (thirteen years ago)
tbf i didn't start listening to music until february of this year
― 乒乓, Thursday, 16 May 2013 22:18 (thirteen years ago)
i agree with gr808. loving the hype, and glad that the album lives up to it. way better -- more complex; distinctive -- than human after all.
― Treeship, Thursday, 16 May 2013 22:18 (thirteen years ago)
I'll say this: it's better than the Justin Timberlake, which arrived with virtually no hype. He should have hired Nile Rodgers, esteemed producer of INXS, Duran Duran and B-52s.
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 16 May 2013 22:19 (thirteen years ago)
(Just being snide, Nile rules)
otoh i was just thinking today how awesome it would have been had they recorded this same album in secret and then pulled a mbv and just released it with 6 hours notice
― gr8080, Thursday, 16 May 2013 22:21 (thirteen years ago)

This album continues to make me yearn for Steely Dan's Aja and Gaucho ~ which is a very good thing. I can't point at individual songs, it's a ~feeling~.

Lol, not really.
Thinking about DP asking Becker or Fagen for this album though. It is... too much. Of awesomeness. Which is probably why they didn't ask them.
