caek, Wednesday, 15 May 2013 09:46 (thirteen years ago)

Think someone upthread (Jordan?) said there were two guys on drums, one of whom is Omar Hakim who has played with people like Sting and Bowie and whatnot.

dschinghis kraan (NickB), Wednesday, 15 May 2013 09:47 (thirteen years ago)

The other one is definitely Tony McCarroll.

Al Roker on drums, ladies and gentlemen!

Naive Teen Idol, Wednesday, 15 May 2013 10:33 (thirteen years ago)

Touch is just so amazing, I know this is prob the third time I've said that but is also only the third time I've listened.

... (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 15 May 2013 12:26 (thirteen years ago)

I was listening to this album on the train last night and the rain was coming down, and the girl opposite me who was looking out of the window unconnectedly just started weeping at the exact point the choir on Touch came in. I assumed she'd prefer to be left alone but it was kind of a weird thing to have happening opposite with this emotionally overwrought 70s soft rock ballad soundtracking it.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 15 May 2013 12:33 (thirteen years ago)

Either it was unconnected or Daft Punk were just controlling the universe to suit the music.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 15 May 2013 12:33 (thirteen years ago)

controversial vegan pregnancy (contenderizer), Wednesday, 15 May 2013 13:34 (thirteen years ago)

finally read the pitchfork interview, this line is interesting:

At one point during our interview, Bangalter let it slip that he and de Homem-Christo recently had a meeting with De Palma to "discuss some things," though he declined to divulge any specifics.

!!!!!

gr8080, Wednesday, 15 May 2013 13:39 (thirteen years ago)

O SHIT

anyone who hates touch is just a bad human being

morally

iatee, Wednesday, 15 May 2013 14:18 (thirteen years ago)

Looks like I wasn't the only person who was reminded of "Wonder 2" with "Contact".

MarkoP, Wednesday, 15 May 2013 14:21 (thirteen years ago)

i do like giorgio, but it's not my favourite (via the middle third sounding like a good bit of the tron soundtrack)

caek, Wednesday, 15 May 2013 14:26 (thirteen years ago)

How can you discuss Touch without mentioning the super fun Dr. Buzzardry of it?

Cousin Slappy, Wednesday, 15 May 2013 14:28 (thirteen years ago)

iatee otm.

ḉrut (crüt), Wednesday, 15 May 2013 14:47 (thirteen years ago)

i only know one dr buzzard song and tbh they probably aren't what the readers of that magazine are into.

You mean where Sidney Bechet rises from the grave?

One of the pieces I read (PFM?) mentioned that they had recorded orchestral arrangements for all (or most) of the tracks but ended up only using them for a handful of them. Given the complexity of so many of these cuts, I imagine some really interesting outtakes could be floating around.

Naive Teen Idol, Wednesday, 15 May 2013 14:50 (thirteen years ago)

I read they worked on Get Lucky for 18 months. That's insane.

every time I listen to 'Lose Yourself to Dance' I find it more melancholy, I'm trying to come on come on come on, I'm really trying :'(.

ohmigud (Merdeyeux), Wednesday, 15 May 2013 15:56 (thirteen years ago)

the come on come on come ons don't even sound like they're too bothered

Number None, Wednesday, 15 May 2013 15:57 (thirteen years ago)

i'm not sure i hear the melancholy in lose yourself to dance.. definitely hear exhaustion though

sigourney wiener (diamonddave85), Wednesday, 15 May 2013 16:03 (thirteen years ago)

couldn't disagree more-- the whole song feels so desparate and urgent

gr8080, Wednesday, 15 May 2013 16:08 (thirteen years ago)

Touch is filled 2/3 with rubbish. The intro is useless and Paul Williams voice is too histrionic for my taste. The rest is beautiful.

Moka, Wednesday, 15 May 2013 16:12 (thirteen years ago)

so Pitchfork is gonna give this the ol 6.9 aren't they

frogbs, Wednesday, 15 May 2013 16:29 (thirteen years ago)

after three days of listening i'm more or less ready to put this down.
meanwhile, after two months of john talabot...

UTW, USA, ILX LIFER (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 15 May 2013 16:30 (thirteen years ago)

really? talabot got about 2/3 plays from me and that was it, even though i thought it was good.

... (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 15 May 2013 16:32 (thirteen years ago)

for me, it's been on heavy rotation more or less since I heard it. Which may say something about the kind of electronic music i want.

UTW, USA, ILX LIFER (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 15 May 2013 16:33 (thirteen years ago)

talabot still giving me life over a year on

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Wednesday, 15 May 2013 16:35 (thirteen years ago)

I have absolutely no idea what Pitchfork will give this.

MarkoP, Wednesday, 15 May 2013 16:35 (thirteen years ago)

i do actually mean to give DP another try but lots else to listen to, not really been moved to do so - heard the new eve album for the first time yesterday and have barely been able to take that off repeat

flamenco drop (lex pretend), Wednesday, 15 May 2013 16:36 (thirteen years ago)

Touch is one of those songs that 10, 15 years ago would have been a great source of controversy in music nerd circles -- the pinnacle of ambition to some, an overindulgent embarrassment to others. Before Kid A, part of the fun of listening to records with songs like these was to pour through the different opinions and try to decide which camp you belonged in.

A recent quote in the Pitchfork piece made me think that in some ways, they're consciously trying to will us back to that time:

"Technology has made music accessible in a philosophically interesting way, which is great," says Bangalter, talking about the proliferation of home recording and the laptop studio. "But on the other hand, when everybody has the ability to make magic, it's like there's no more magic-- if the audience can just do it themselves, why are they going to bother?"
