the late great, Tuesday, 14 May 2013 20:23 (thirteen years ago)

'Lose Yourself To Dance' sounds like an outtake from 'Hot Space'...Brian May quit the band momentarily and this is what the rest of the band came up with whilst he was gone...

The Pastiche Liberation Front (sonnyboy), Tuesday, 14 May 2013 20:24 (thirteen years ago)

Lose Yourself kind of tips the album's hand more completely than Get Lucky imo; may explain why they didn't lead with it

UTW, USA, ILX LIFER (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 14 May 2013 20:25 (thirteen years ago)

Second listen through and Touch is so amazing.

... (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 14 May 2013 20:26 (thirteen years ago)

I like this album cause it sounds like the Return To Forever records my dad played when I was a kid

it's got that perfect plaintive intensity to it that you get on great dance records, sometimes.

he's copping a somewhat refined dirty mind era prince inflection and somehow i like it!

overall i like get lucky less than a lot of this record, but i can't be sure if it's just been rinsed dry for me by all the radio play.

... (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 14 May 2013 20:32 (thirteen years ago)

love it when ukers say rinse

乒乓, Tuesday, 14 May 2013 20:33 (thirteen years ago)

Daft Punk guys are pretty much my age, which makes me think they're trolling all the young fans who had dads playing Return to Forever at home and moms listening to smooth jazz funk while driving carpools to soccer games.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 14 May 2013 20:34 (thirteen years ago)

yeah def an elaborate trolling going on here

gr8080, Tuesday, 14 May 2013 20:36 (thirteen years ago)

very calculated irony in this 74minute album that took years to make

gr8080, Tuesday, 14 May 2013 20:36 (thirteen years ago)

They play the long game.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 14 May 2013 20:37 (thirteen years ago)

making rad music that sounds like other music they like...the ultimate troll

iatee, Tuesday, 14 May 2013 20:37 (thirteen years ago)

Second listen through and Touch is so amazing.

I love it so much, I feel like it is almost pandering to me.

The last of the famous international Greyjoys (Nicole), Tuesday, 14 May 2013 20:38 (thirteen years ago)

It's post-post-ironic.

doing it right kinda makes me laugh, it's like if you pitched down alvin and the chipmunks

... (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 14 May 2013 20:45 (thirteen years ago)

feel like it needs a video with an elaborate macarena-style dance

... (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 14 May 2013 20:45 (thirteen years ago)

lmao i love it

gr8080, Tuesday, 14 May 2013 20:47 (thirteen years ago)

"Beyond" starts out for the first forty seconds sounding for all the world like that touring symphony orchesta that covers video game music doing incidental soundtrack work from Zelda Wind Waker

UTW, USA, ILX LIFER (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 14 May 2013 20:48 (thirteen years ago)

Doin' it right makes me move about uncontrollably thinking I actually look like a cool robot = mission accomplished

Le Bateau Ivre, Tuesday, 14 May 2013 20:48 (thirteen years ago)

doin it right is probably top three fave tracks on the album, don't understand the hate here

UTW, USA, ILX LIFER (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 14 May 2013 20:49 (thirteen years ago)

(along with Giorgio and Lose Yourself imo)

UTW, USA, ILX LIFER (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 14 May 2013 20:50 (thirteen years ago)

and I LIKE the astigmatic idiot toddler vocals

UTW, USA, ILX LIFER (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 14 May 2013 20:50 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i wasn't hating really! just something really amusing about the vocodered bit of it.

... (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 14 May 2013 20:51 (thirteen years ago)

So is this the most high profile, mainstream instance of an album that rehabilitates 70s jazz funk and disco?

It sounds like that may be the root cause of all the dissonant opinions popping up on the web. At least in the US, this may be the first really big example of a group fully embracing a bunch of musical tropes that have largely been banished from popular venues for several decades. Do most people born after 1980 no longer have any point of reference for this genre?

until "Get Lucky" Daft Punk can hardly be called high profile or mainstream in the States.

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 14 May 2013 21:02 (thirteen years ago)

lol, that was a comedy self ban

UTW, USA, ILX LIFER (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 14 May 2013 21:04 (thirteen years ago)

xpost -- Well it's high profile NOW, is the point.

this is full-circle for the thread!

UTW, USA, ILX LIFER (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 14 May 2013 21:04 (thirteen years ago)

Anyway I just think of "Touch" as one of Williams' Muppet ballads to a degree and that's Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem on that one breakdown. (All meant as high praise obv.)

balls, Tuesday, 14 May 2013 21:05 (thirteen years ago)

lol at dan using paul williams winning an oscar as proof of his canonization, someone let carl wilson know there was no need to write let's talk about love as 'my heart will go on' won the oscar so obv everyone's on board w/ celine dion.

balls, Tuesday, 14 May 2013 21:08 (thirteen years ago)

it took ILE for me to realize that other people besides Pauline Kael adore Phantom of the Paradise.

A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 14 May 2013 21:09 (thirteen years ago)

wtf a ginormous number of people are on board with Celine Dion

inigo montoya to thread w/r/t Dan's use of "canon"

Tim F, Tuesday, 14 May 2013 21:15 (thirteen years ago)

'Touch' is the one track I wanna keep going back to...Paul Williams vocal is one of the most sincere I've heard in ages...forgot what a great vocalist he is...seriously can't believe anybody could hate on this album...think of it as Phoenix's lost third album produced by DP...
