seeing lots of ppl entering the bargaining stage of the kubler-ross stages wrt to this album
― jay-z's ansari (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 13 May 2013 21:54 (thirteen years ago)
lol, how many people are taking the paul williams track like an eight minute punch in the face
― controversial vegan pregnancy (contenderizer), Monday, 13 May 2013 21:55 (thirteen years ago)
So who's going to start the RAM vs. m b v poll?
― i, norbit (jaymc), Monday, 13 May 2013 21:55 (thirteen years ago)
It was nice of Daft Punk to make this particular Steely Dan fan a disco album. That's all, not looking for a fight.
― Josiah Alan, Monday, 13 May 2013 21:55 (thirteen years ago)
Will get filed in between my George Duke and Herbie records.
― Josiah Alan, Monday, 13 May 2013 21:56 (thirteen years ago)
I kinda can't wait to pick the sunniest point in the day and go for a walk around the neighborhood while listening to the back half of this.
― Greer, Monday, 13 May 2013 21:56 (thirteen years ago)
the italo parts of this sound to me like a poor version of alex moulton's ideas. the funk bits are sub paul hardcastle.
― the late great, Monday, May 13, 2013 3:43 PM (1 hour ago)
"motherboard" does sound like something off "exodus" i'll give you that, but not ~poor~ at all imo
― gr8080, Monday, 13 May 2013 21:57 (thirteen years ago)
i hear no steely dan in this whatsoever but hey
― emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Monday, 13 May 2013 21:57 (thirteen years ago)
"fragments of time" is very steely dan
― gr8080, Monday, 13 May 2013 21:58 (thirteen years ago)
I hear more Toto than the Dan.
― MarkoP, Monday, 13 May 2013 21:58 (thirteen years ago)
i'm kinda curious abt this now actually, i wasn't going to listen to this but i can't resist DIFFICULT ALBUMS
― jay-z's ansari (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 13 May 2013 21:59 (thirteen years ago)
i'm sorry you only seem interested in the most boring obvious hype-releases tho

Lol. A 'tu quoque' as reply? Really? Come now...
― Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 13 May 2013 21:59 (thirteen years ago)
'Fragments of Time' one of the standouts so far. Indeed v Steely Dan/Yachty/10cc
What's a Steely Dan?
― Greer, Monday, 13 May 2013 22:01 (thirteen years ago)
Finished. I like this album quite a bit!
Keep in mind I like later Jamiroquai, and I was listening to Captain & Tenille and Tony Orlando & Dawn last night. Sounds like Daft Punk aren't interested in Dance Music (tm) anymore, and going more in the production/soundtrack/retro realm. Didn't Daft Punk say they loved Sebastian Tellier? Looking back at that statement, this album isn't as surprising.
― ma ck ro ma ck ro (mackro mackro), Monday, 13 May 2013 22:02 (thirteen years ago)
granted I only listened to 100 seconds of this before wandering back to Savages and Keep Shelley In Athens but "difficult" is the last word I would apply to those 100 seconds
― far too much asshole flesh (DJP), Monday, 13 May 2013 22:02 (thirteen years ago)

― the late great, Monday, 13 May 2013 22:03 (thirteen years ago)
I'll probably get around to a full listen sometime tonight while cleaning
or I might just put "Rollin' and Scratchin'" on endless loop, IDK
― far too much asshole flesh (DJP), Monday, 13 May 2013 22:03 (thirteen years ago)
i haven't heard anything yet but i'm going to because i like expensively recorded drums played by expensive drummers.
― precious bonsai children of new york (Jordan), Monday, 13 May 2013 22:04 (thirteen years ago)
the julian casablancas one is great. i love how simple and straightforward most of these songs are, and how much pleasure daft punk are able to wring out of repetition. doin' it right sounds like a streamlined "bros" or something, and i like that.
― Treeship, Monday, 13 May 2013 22:04 (thirteen years ago)
I think I would be a little disappointed if they released a banging EDM album: Human After All 2.0, it's ok for them to age.
― Josiah Alan, Monday, 13 May 2013 22:05 (thirteen years ago)
well, as well as pointing out your accusation was completely incorrect

honestly, at least on the crappy rip i heard, i feel like i've never heard drums sound more expensive than on this record.
― Clay, Monday, 13 May 2013 22:07 (thirteen years ago)
Do the PB haters also dislike 'Person Pitch' and 'Bros' in particular? If so, I feel bad for them.
two of the worst pieces of music ever recorded iirc
― flamenco drop (lex pretend)
Lex, I'm no Panda Bear fan either but please can you just stop. This is so tiresome, we all know how strongly you feel about him. Why are you wasting your time getting so angry about these bands? Is it fun for you to get so worked up ALL THE TIME? I'm not saying I want to read every one on here agreeing how great the album is but now you've listened to an album that you knew you would hate are we going to have to see you saying how this album sucks every day? You already told us you were going to hate this album a few weeks ago just looking at the track listing. Same for Vampire Weekend, if you hate them so much why do you feel the need to post on their thread so much?

lolol yeah how is this a "difficult" album? i liked reading that ppl thought it was though because it made me feel like a very advanced music listener.

I don't know, I love you on here and as a music journalist. But you seem to stick around in threads about music you HATE/FIND BORING etc for so long, makes me wonder why. I don't go invading threads about music I dislike, why would I? If i were genuinly disappointed about an artist I had high hopes of, sure. But you only dropped by here to say you think this sucks...

Fragments of Time sounds like ten Fleetwood Mac songs microcut and thrown back together, the dominant vibe for the rest was for me kinda Steely Dan meets crossover-period Herbie Hancock. The last track turning into Iron Maiden, that I didn't expect.
― ohmigud (Merdeyeux), Monday, 13 May 2013 22:11 (thirteen years ago)
wait what
that's the first thing said about this that interests me
― far too much asshole flesh (DJP), Monday, 13 May 2013 22:12 (thirteen years ago)
i agree with the iron maiden thing. arpeggios with aggressive drumming.
― Treeship, Monday, 13 May 2013 22:13 (thirteen years ago)
for the record i am not particularly worked up
also i'd rather have people post negatively in threads about music i loved (which are plentiful! i post in them all the time!) instead of the usual tumbleweed, because seeing a range of opinions interests me
― flamenco drop (lex pretend), Monday, 13 May 2013 22:13 (thirteen years ago)
The breakdown in Giorgio gets a little Maiden too.

Lex, I'm no Panda Bear fan either but please can you just stop.
― flopson, Monday, 13 May 2013 22:15 (thirteen years ago)
sadly none of the Bruce-esque or Dave-esque action we were all demanding from our DP-go-IM songs, but definitely quite the Maiden gallop going on.
― ohmigud (Merdeyeux), Monday, 13 May 2013 22:16 (thirteen years ago)
What's the scratching sound on latter part of Giorgio by Moroder? Is that a turntable or a guitar?
― MarkoP, Monday, 13 May 2013 22:16 (thirteen years ago)
i think the scratching is a turntable
― Treeship, Monday, 13 May 2013 22:17 (thirteen years ago)
idk though
― Treeship, Monday, 13 May 2013 22:18 (thirteen years ago)
Sounds kind of like a guitar solo with someone scratching over the top to me.

there's this restaurant near me that's got this beautiful expansive patio covered with trees and is perpetually filled with beautiful people having conversations, but thing is the food sucks and they give you too much of it.

I too am interested in a "range of opinions". You saying music is "boooooring/suuuuucks" is not very opinionated though, and that is your usual shtick in thread about music you don't like. You hadn't even HEARD the new Daft Punk album but already came marching in declaring your dread.
With love,
Tumbleweed
― Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 13 May 2013 22:22 (thirteen years ago)
aside from the breakdown, "fragments of time" isn't doing it for me. like most of the rest, though, so maybe i'll come around.

French musicians seem obsessed with the 1970s to a pretty unhealthy degree. Other decades are available for inspiration.
