so far this album sounds like late 70s Herbie Hancock deepcuts

Totally get that vibe on track 2 Rev. My exact thought was 'this sounds like the bitter end of the relationship from 'I Thought It Was You'.
― brotherlovesdub, Monday, 13 May 2013 20:16 (thirteen years ago)
This is grown folks music, for real.

Quoth a breathless industry/DJ/artist friend:
"Daft Punk new album Random Access Memories is now streaming on iTunes a week before the release. I'm so glad to be able to share the absolute revelation and inspiration of this record with all of my friends. The Paul Williams track may be one of the best songs ever recorded. It's been a beautiful process to see Artists and their team work so hard and so brilliantly with such passion and focus for so long and forge such a perfect and timeless record. It's my generations Abbey Road. Cancel your week and listen to it on repeat. Two predictions. This album going to make millions of kids learn how to play instruments again and Paul Williams will win a Grammy for best male vocal performance. The world has just been made a better place. Fucking celebrate the gift of Daft Punk and thank them for caring enough to give a fuck and making a heart melting, mind bending record. In a world of hyperbole this record brought tears of joys and sorrow to my eyes on first listen. It has the heft of Kubrick film. A masters Masterpeice! Long live music. It's a good day to be alive. Thank You Robots."

xpost to alfred. i like hearing ppls' "snap judgements". reminds me of college "listening parties" of albums that leaked, where people would start giving opinions about the record halfway through the first track, comparing it to the bands' previous efforts, etc. what life's all about.
― Treeship, Monday, 13 May 2013 20:31 (thirteen years ago)
Whoa, for all the flack that Julian Casablancas and Panda Bear got at first in this thread they are amongst the best contributions in here.
― Moka, Monday, 13 May 2013 20:31 (thirteen years ago)
Also: this is a really weird album. Ditto the sentiment that this seems more like a summer album for ilxor rather than the real world. Lots of obscure, nerdy influences all around.
― Moka, Monday, 13 May 2013 20:32 (thirteen years ago)
sure but my FB page is the equivalent of Miami hurricane coverage in August.
― A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 13 May 2013 20:33 (thirteen years ago)
the most interesting thing about this so far for me is why only the vocalists get an official featuring credit, not rodgers/moroder etc
― flamenco drop (lex pretend), Monday, 13 May 2013 20:33 (thirteen years ago)
the track is called GIORGIO by MORODER how much more credit does he need
― tweeship journey to 77 (mh), Monday, 13 May 2013 20:35 (thirteen years ago)
twitter reaction seems to be quite backlashy apart from the people who i'm pretty sure have never said a critical word about a hyped release in their life, it's heartening
― flamenco drop (lex pretend), Monday, 13 May 2013 20:36 (thirteen years ago)
come on , come on, come on, come on, come on, come on , come on, come on, come on, come on,come on , come on, come on, come on, come on, come on , come on, come on, come on, come on,come on , come on, come on, come on, come on, come on , come on, come on, come on, come on,

i want to get so drunk and blast "contact" on repeat
― gr8080, Monday, 13 May 2013 20:40 (thirteen years ago)
that will probably happen at my place, sometime
― tweeship journey to 77 (mh), Monday, 13 May 2013 20:41 (thirteen years ago)
i dunno about atrocious, 5 tracks in and this is just incredibly dull, it feels like listening to some ~classic rock~ for old men
bring back human after all, all is forgiven
― flamenco drop (lex pretend), Monday, 13 May 2013 20:41 (thirteen years ago)
Sounds ideal tbh
― Ismael Klata, Monday, 13 May 2013 20:42 (thirteen years ago)
oh no classic rock and old men
― gr8080, Monday, 13 May 2013 20:42 (thirteen years ago)
feel like any opinions of this record given while not stoned are invalid
― J0rdan S., Monday, 13 May 2013 20:42 (thirteen years ago)
this just in: some people like it, some people don't
― brotherlovesdub, Monday, 13 May 2013 20:43 (thirteen years ago)
RAM sound like Air trying to do a Steely Dan Record
― tarping, Monday, 13 May 2013 20:43 (thirteen years ago)
to be distinguished from classic rock for young women
― nakhchivan, Monday, 13 May 2013 20:43 (thirteen years ago)
the italo parts of this sound to me like a poor version of alex moulton's ideas. the funk bits are sub paul hardcastle.
― the late great, Monday, 13 May 2013 20:43 (thirteen years ago)
I guess that's why "The Game of Love" sounds like somebody wanting to imitate a Gaucho track.
― A deeper shade of lol (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 13 May 2013 20:44 (thirteen years ago)
you get the people who have been semi-ironically jamming yacht rock, the common man who has no hipster shame for unabashed love of the pop qualities of Nile Rodgers, and anyone who will show up due to Pharrell or Casablancas or Panda Bear, which hits a reasonable swath of the mainstream and fringe
this idea had legs with no music written
― tweeship journey to 77 (mh), Monday, 13 May 2013 20:45 (thirteen years ago)
getting a big data from star trek furrowing his brow & asking what is this emotion you humans call love vibe from this record so far
― daft on the causes of punk (schlump), Monday, 13 May 2013 20:46 (thirteen years ago)
the italo parts aren't for italo fans, they're for people who have heard giorgio's radio hits!

i've been jamming the imminent peven everett album for the past week and THAT is how to do classicist dance music with life and emotions. this is oh god it's such a fucking snooze how are there still so many songs left to get through?
― flamenco drop (lex pretend), Monday, 13 May 2013 20:46 (thirteen years ago)
I recommend giving this a spin instead:

i must get round to listening to steely dan at some point, i feel like i've said this every year i've been on ilx but never quite managed it
― flamenco drop (lex pretend), Monday, 13 May 2013 20:48 (thirteen years ago)
Album reminds me of this thing by David Foster Wallace:
"The next real literary “rebels” in this country might well emerge as some weird bunch of anti-rebels, born oglers who dare somehow to back away from ironic watching, who have the childish gall actually to endorse and instantiate single-entendre principles. Who treat of plain old untrendy human troubles and emotions in U.S. life with reverence and conviction. Who eschew self-consciousness and hip fatigue. These anti-rebels would be outdated, of course, before they even started. Dead on the page. Too sincere. Clearly repressed. Backward, quaint, naive, anachronistic. Maybe that’ll be the point. Maybe that’s why they’ll be the next real rebels. Real rebels, as far as I can see, risk disapproval. The old postmodern insurgents risked the gasp and squeal: shock, disgust, outrage, censorship, accusations of socialism, anarchism, nihilism. Today’s risks are different. The new rebels might be artists willing to risk the yawn, the rolled eyes, the cool smile, the nudged ribs, the parody of gifted ironists, the “Oh how banal.” To risk accusations of sentimentality, melodrama. Of overcredulity. Of softness. Of willingness to be suckered by a world of lurkers and starers who fear gaze and ridicule above imprisonment without law. Who knows."
