they still sound very "safe" to me
maybe that is the point

GGD will be there for definite. Would guess that Hot Chip and No Age aren't going to make it though. Which leaves one more...
― Frank Sumatra (NickB), Saturday, 14 February 2009 01:52 (seventeen years ago)
xpost, yeah I mean they're pretty boring but if they were on in the backround it would be fine.
― Plaxico (I know, right?), Saturday, 14 February 2009 01:53 (seventeen years ago)
Shouldn't there be an inquest when "pretty boring" is a near dead-cert for the top 5 of a year-end ILM poll?
― there's no antivote to (country matters), Saturday, 14 February 2009 01:55 (seventeen years ago)
lol I think I'll wait and hear them before saying any more, it's well past my bedtime

Yeah, what am I douing still awake? Have had Astral Social Club on repeat. Noise-friendly Electrodribble you can believe in.
― Frank Sumatra (NickB), Saturday, 14 February 2009 01:58 (seventeen years ago)
I was under the impression that LJ liked a lot of electrodribble. Can't think of any off the top of my head.
― Plaxico (I know, right?), Saturday, 14 February 2009 01:59 (seventeen years ago)
Also, this thread makes me feel like electrodribble is some 2008 meme

P.S. this Cut Copy is fucking dull
― there's no antivote to (country matters), Saturday, 14 February 2009 02:02 (seventeen years ago)
My guess is that Nick Cave and No Age don't make it. Not sure about Hot Chip, Air France, and Bon Iver either.
― Dan S, Saturday, 14 February 2009 02:02 (seventeen years ago)
Well, for an indie band that cribs from house music, you get the feeling that they actually listen to house music instead of cribbing from the *idea* of it, which is a major problem I have with indie appropriation. And yeah, that does really sound similar.

If nothing else, this list -- which, strangely, is more in sync with my tastes than any previous ILM EOY thing -- has introduced me to The-Dream, which I'm just now exploring and loving. Which reminds me of a perhaps obvious point -- all or at least the vast majority of us would probably have voted somewhat differently if we'd heard all of the albums here. That's even truer for the tracks list. Which makes complaining about the list kind of redundant or pointless or both. It would be interesting if, having heard all of the stuff here by the end, we were to resubmit our votes and we could see how a lack of exposure to certain types of music might have influenced our initial picks. (I'm sure musically would be amenable to that, ha ha.)
― Lostandfound, Saturday, 14 February 2009 02:21 (seventeen years ago)
lack of exposure or lack of interest/musical tunnel vision, whatever
― Lostandfound, Saturday, 14 February 2009 02:22 (seventeen years ago)
Love Love/Hate, but kinda surprised at how many guys are jumping on with the love in this thread for two reasons. The first being what Tim F said, I kindof assumed the people who would like this would have already heard this (if that makes sense) and also it was a bit of a slow burner for me. Like there's an initial wtf jolt but then after that it takes a little living with before it starts to come apart in your hands.
― Plaxico (I know, right?), Saturday, 14 February 2009 02:26 (seventeen years ago)
Its a very tight, knotted album and there are weird surfaces that are plastic then glass then air.
― Plaxico (I know, right?), Saturday, 14 February 2009 02:27 (seventeen years ago)
I would like it if the people who hadn't heard many of the "obscure" picks of 50-21 would check them out.I'd like to hear that Alex Moulton. Every link I find online has expired/been taken down.

Me too, to both.

Also, I'm pretty sure I voted for the Cut Copy, but one day I made a mix for someone and Cut Copy were next to New Order and it really put the former in perspective, in terms of their ambitions and especially the falling short part. :(
Not being a hater, I like them well enough.
― Lostandfound, Saturday, 14 February 2009 02:50 (seventeen years ago)
I know I'm jumping around a lot here -- I always seem to arrive at the current end of this very long thread after everyone's left -- but as for that MGMT album, I agree for the most part with those who said only the singles are any good, but those singles were plenty good enough for me to include it in my vote, and I would add that the second half of "Of Moons, Birds and Monsters" is kind of awesomely beautiful, while "Weekend Wars" is also more than decent. The rest, okay, kind of meh, but fifty per cent of the album isn't a bad return.
― Lostandfound, Saturday, 14 February 2009 02:57 (seventeen years ago)
Glad to see people are discovering The-Dream. Would just like to note that he has a new album coming out super soon. Hear three tracks on http://radiokillarecords.com (oh, and you can also listen to Love/Hate and Electrik Red). Assuming the rest of it is this good, I hope to see it in next year's top tennnnnn

I think we can now officially forgive ILM for coining the term "electro-dribble", right guys?
― Lostandfound, Saturday, 14 February 2009 04:14 (seventeen years ago)
j/k
forgive? it's one of the high points of this thread.

Ugh, yeah, maybe this thread, but...
― Lostandfound, Saturday, 14 February 2009 04:34 (seventeen years ago)
i'm putting "electrodribble" on my google alerts. i am confident it will find its way into the critical lexicon.
― paper plans (tipsy mothra), Saturday, 14 February 2009 04:42 (seventeen years ago)
But since it can't be adequately defined, it just becomes a big stick with which we can all merrily beat some unsuspecting (and often undeserving) artist. I mean, had it been a term back then, would somebody have used it to disparage Kraftwerk... or Tubeway Army... or Bronski Beat... or New Order? I just don't get it. Ridiculing electro sounds in pop/rock seems like a really pointless (and frankly weird) dead-end street to go down.
― Lostandfound, Saturday, 14 February 2009 04:56 (seventeen years ago)

ive not once opened the electro dribble thread but every time i see it mentioned here i think of:
― johnny crunch, Saturday, 14 February 2009 05:35 (seventeen years ago)
plus, shit that will (and should) make it:
Erykah BaduGang Gang DanceNo AgePortisheadTV on the RadioVampire WeekendLil Wayne
except gang gang dance. grime thing should make tracks, but album is colossal meh. will make it anyway, due to siouxie <3.
shit that will NOT make it:
james blackshawharvey milknobunny:(
plus anyone who has listened to the bug for more than month should know that shit is HELLA BORING. poison dart notwithstanding. another one for trx only. shame on you, ILM.
― contenderizer, Saturday, 14 February 2009 05:41 (seventeen years ago)
It's not hard to define electrodribble. The Postal Service album was the originator of the movement, though some music it would apply to came before that. Nevertheless, The Postal Service can be made responsible for the musical zeitgeist that occurred in its wake.
And if that's not definition enough, without naming specific offenders, I don't know if I can make it any clearer.

grime thing should make tracks, but album is colossal meh.
so wrong. "princes" is good, but it's like my 7th-favorite track. you know what's great about that album (among other things), is the drummer. great drummer.
― paper plans (tipsy mothra), Saturday, 14 February 2009 05:50 (seventeen years ago)
agree about the drummer, but most of the tracks remain more interesting than deeply compelling to me. i mean good, solid, intriging, but not quite great. but when mr. tinchy starts talking it's like a sudden transmission from a different, far better planet/record. the disjunction is just too massive and too awesome to ignore. good band, GREAT song.
― contenderizer, Saturday, 14 February 2009 05:54 (seventeen years ago)
"colossal meh" was some bullshit. i've had drinks. it's a good record.

ILM top ten for 2009, my projected order:
10 Lindstrøm9 Air France8 Gang Gang Dance7 Cut Copy6 TV on the Radio5 Vampire Weekend4 Hercules and Love Affair3 Lil Wayne2 Erykah Badu1 Portishead
I am 100% confident in the artists, not sure at all about the placement order.
Thoughts?
― ilxor, Saturday, 14 February 2009 06:17 (seventeen years ago)
The order of the top 3 is probably right, the rest is up in the air. You're right about the artists, though.
