Glad to see 11 so I can go to bed now. The Bug strikes me as a record I'd love and yet I can't garner enough enthusiasm to actually listen to it. Maybe tomorrow.

Hah where did everyone go? Someone must want to talk about The Bug

Kinda disappointed to see Jeezy place so low actually - that made my #2 for the year. He has all the dexterity of a steamroller and the unpredictability of a wrecking ball but somehow that totally *makes it*. I can't remember the last time I heard an album that aimed so bluntly for the epochal and actually hit it.
Conversely I'm kind of happy to see The Bug miss the top 10. It's an album I liked a lot at first, but the more I think about it the less it appeals to me. Except the tracks with Flowdan, which are brilliant.

Can we go back to Kelley Polar for a second? Really wish I'd voted in this thing, because I definitely woulda given that another #1. Anybody who hasn't heard his Italian/Italo cover of Magic Dance needs to. Now. https://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=batch_download&batch_id=Q01IZGVkdEN6NEkwTVE9PQ

M83 and Schnauss as appeal to similar moods for me, too. And I think of M83 as kind of It's My Life-era Talk Talk by way of Black Box Recorder. By which I mean no criticism; I voted for S=Y and it will almost certainly be my highest placement.
Also, I feel sad and old that somebody said "BOC" and meant something other than Blue Oyster Cult.
― glenn mcdonald, Saturday, 14 February 2009 01:27 (seventeen years ago)
Glenn, odds are you are not that much older than me! (also I said Boards of Canada before switching to the acronym precisely because of Blue Oyster Cult)

The Bug left me a bit cold too really. Dunno why, it's just all a bit Kev Martin being scowly and uncompromising isn't it?
― Frank Sumatra (NickB), Saturday, 14 February 2009 01:42 (seventeen years ago)
I heard Poison Dart just now and it did precisely squat-all for me. There wasn't even an authentic air of menace, just a particular and insistent vocal styling atop some standard droning, grinding electronics.
― there's no antivote to (country matters), Saturday, 14 February 2009 01:44 (seventeen years ago)
fairly confident of ggd making the top 10. that's about the only thing left i voted for that i think still has a chance of showing up. (other than that, my rooting interest is all about hoping vampire weekend somehow failed to place.)
― paper plans (tipsy mothra), Saturday, 14 February 2009 01:46 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah, maybe I should give The Bug a third chance. I had a similar reaction, though. It was decent enough, but it was so hyped from all quarters that I was expecting to be blown away.

also wtf is cut copy and why do i have a dreadful feeling they sound like another neatly-packaged indie-electro band such as hot chip

"my thing w/ the recession is that it wants to be an important album, but it's not ham-handed at all, it's very "jeezy gives back in the best way he knows how" vain, like one thing ppl who are broke and down on their luck want is good entertainment, and jeezy's album is really that. his personal bailout, in a way. the recession thing just makes it more relatable and timely, like "put on" - "i put on for my city" - is pretty self-centered in a way, and it's all about his cars and money etc, but i was in atl when that shit dropped and it felt like the lifeblood of the city. it's just a totally pitch-perfect album imo, not too heavy one way (like the nas album for instance), and ppl (real ppl) really really feel jeezy"
<3ing you right now J0rdan.
― Tim F, Saturday, 14 February 2009 01:49 (seventeen years ago)
Nah, CutCopy are better than they sound. More expansive and New Order-ey. A kindof Lisa Lashes aesthetic going on which I think is funny.
― Plaxico (I know, right?), Saturday, 14 February 2009 01:51 (seventeen years ago)

GGD will be there for definite. Would guess that Hot Chip and No Age aren't going to make it though. Which leaves one more...

xpost, yeah I mean they're pretty boring but if they were on in the backround it would be fine.
― Plaxico (I know, right?), Saturday, 14 February 2009 01:53 (seventeen years ago)
Shouldn't there be an inquest when "pretty boring" is a near dead-cert for the top 5 of a year-end ILM poll?

My guess is that Nick Cave and No Age don't make it. Not sure about Hot Chip, Air France, and Bon Iver either.
― Dan S, Saturday, 14 February 2009 02:02 (seventeen years ago)
Well, for an indie band that cribs from house music, you get the feeling that they actually listen to house music instead of cribbing from the *idea* of it, which is a major problem I have with indie appropriation. And yeah, that does really sound similar.

If nothing else, this list -- which, strangely, is more in sync with my tastes than any previous ILM EOY thing -- has introduced me to The-Dream, which I'm just now exploring and loving. Which reminds me of a perhaps obvious point -- all or at least the vast majority of us would probably have voted somewhat differently if we'd heard all of the albums here. That's even truer for the tracks list. Which makes complaining about the list kind of redundant or pointless or both. It would be interesting if, having heard all of the stuff here by the end, we were to resubmit our votes and we could see how a lack of exposure to certain types of music might have influenced our initial picks. (I'm sure musically would be amenable to that, ha ha.)
― Lostandfound, Saturday, 14 February 2009 02:21 (seventeen years ago)
lack of exposure or lack of interest/musical tunnel vision, whatever
― Lostandfound, Saturday, 14 February 2009 02:22 (seventeen years ago)
Love Love/Hate, but kinda surprised at how many guys are jumping on with the love in this thread for two reasons. The first being what Tim F said, I kindof assumed the people who would like this would have already heard this (if that makes sense) and also it was a bit of a slow burner for me. Like there's an initial wtf jolt but then after that it takes a little living with before it starts to come apart in your hands.
― Plaxico (I know, right?), Saturday, 14 February 2009 02:26 (seventeen years ago)
Its a very tight, knotted album and there are weird surfaces that are plastic then glass then air.
― Plaxico (I know, right?), Saturday, 14 February 2009 02:27 (seventeen years ago)
I would like it if the people who hadn't heard many of the "obscure" picks of 50-21 would check them out.I'd like to hear that Alex Moulton. Every link I find online has expired/been taken down.

Also, I'm pretty sure I voted for the Cut Copy, but one day I made a mix for someone and Cut Copy were next to New Order and it really put the former in perspective, in terms of their ambitions and especially the falling short part. :(
Not being a hater, I like them well enough.
― Lostandfound, Saturday, 14 February 2009 02:50 (seventeen years ago)
I know I'm jumping around a lot here -- I always seem to arrive at the current end of this very long thread after everyone's left -- but as for that MGMT album, I agree for the most part with those who said only the singles are any good, but those singles were plenty good enough for me to include it in my vote, and I would add that the second half of "Of Moons, Birds and Monsters" is kind of awesomely beautiful, while "Weekend Wars" is also more than decent. The rest, okay, kind of meh, but fifty per cent of the album isn't a bad return.
― Lostandfound, Saturday, 14 February 2009 02:57 (seventeen years ago)
Glad to see people are discovering The-Dream. Would just like to note that he has a new album coming out super soon. Hear three tracks on http://radiokillarecords.com (oh, and you can also listen to Love/Hate and Electrik Red). Assuming the rest of it is this good, I hope to see it in next year's top tennnnnn
