i meant the verbal similes but no worries. couldn't see how the sunbeam/dust image related to the music itself, surely only to its reception.

I'm listening to the Jeezy now and what makes it stand out is... The last two albums were about how to hustle your way to the top but now everything is crumbling his hustling becomes hard work, its an actual struggle and no matter where you look from the bottom to the top of the scale, The Recession is portraying people left in the shit no matter how hard they work. Everything has been made so unnecessarily harder to just work. And then, of course, it ends with hope, which always helps.

raaaaaaaaaah (a hoy hoy), Friday, 13 February 2009 23:36 (seventeen years ago)

soz that was meant to have some context re a contenderizer post. a beer too far...

whatever, Friday, 13 February 2009 23:37 (seventeen years ago)

My guess for no11 is The Bug, but I hope it places higher. Top 3 would be nice but unlikely I suppose.

J0rdan, that is not a contrarian belief, it is what my ears and brain scream out to me and heaven help me if I choose to ignore them

yah and heaven help us if you choose to tell us about it every goddamn time

From Rax to Rich's (jjjusten), Friday, 13 February 2009 23:38 (seventeen years ago)

And of course, it is filled with straight up bangers:

raaaaaaaaaah (a hoy hoy), Friday, 13 February 2009 23:38 (seventeen years ago)

I've not mentioned Schnauss on ILM in like a year

Yeah, not feelin the Jeezy stuff. Club rap isn't my bag, though.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 13 February 2009 23:42 (seventeen years ago)

nah dude i got no problem with them really, just sometimes yer phrasing make it sort of "LOOK AT ME I AM IN YOUR FACE LETTING YOU KNOW WHAT SUCKS AND IS NOT AS AWESOMEASDFSGS". so keep on with the what you think but you know deep breaths and all that

Jeezy isn't really club rap, tho. Even when he is he's treading the line between club banger/hardcore street ish.

The Reverend, Friday, 13 February 2009 23:47 (seventeen years ago)

poll ain't been as good 20-11 as it was 50-21

whatever, Friday, 13 February 2009 23:48 (seventeen years ago)

The Bug is a good guess for #11 imo

xp: 20-11 has been the only part of the poll I've really cared for at all

The Reverend, Friday, 13 February 2009 23:49 (seventeen years ago)

Understood, JJ! I should really invoke the Geir Hongro clause on myself, which is basically a disclaimer stating "These are only my opinions, please disagree with them!"

there's really no chance that Black Mountain is making this now, huh?

Yo, I just copped dat brand new Manity Kane cd. (M@tt He1ges0n), Friday, 13 February 2009 23:51 (seventeen years ago)

yeah no real surprise entries so far. Everything that placed has been repped on the thread earlier as probably going to make it.
I think surprises are going to be albums ranking lower than expected or not at all rather than the "wow i never expected that to make the poll/who the hell are they?" 50-21
50-21 was great though

Should be I think surprises are going to be albums ranking lower than expected or not at all rather than the "wow i never expected that to make the poll/who the hell are they?" of 50-21

it's kinda weird i guess i thought i had more "typical" ILM tastes than i actually do.

already said this on some thread or other, but this is the first jeezy album i've loved. i've always liked him, but i think the production and hooks are the most solid top to bottom on this one, and i also like the urgency of it (and that the urgency feels connected to something beyond his own bad self). compared with, say, the mopey self-absorption of paper trail, the recession feels connected to me. (this was my #2, happy to see it here.)

paper plans (tipsy mothra), Friday, 13 February 2009 23:56 (seventeen years ago)

I gave up on Harvey Milk making it when Torche made it. James Blackshaw a few posts later.

xxp

Yeah, I said that after just hearing Amazin. The other tracks linked up there are much more likeable.

I had hoped Marnie Stern would make the top 50. Surprised she made the metal top 50 but not here.

The User Formerly Known As Pfunkboy Latterly Known as.. (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 14 February 2009 00:03 (seventeen years ago)

my thing w/ the recession is that it wants to be an important album, but it's not ham-handed at all, it's very "jeezy gives back in the best way he knows how" vain, like one thing ppl who are broke and down on their luck want is good entertainment, and jeezy's album is really that. his personal bailout, in a way. the recession thing just makes it more relatable and timely, like "put on" - "i put on for my city" - is pretty self-centered in a way, and it's all about his cars and money etc, but i was in atl when that shit dropped and it felt like the lifeblood of the city. it's just a totally pitch-perfect album imo, not too heavy one way (like the nas album for instance), and ppl (real ppl) really really feel jeezy

big fatass rick ross (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 14 February 2009 00:04 (seventeen years ago)

I've always felt that one of the major things that made Jeezy tick in the past was his sense of dread. He's on top now, but it could all come crashing down at any moment. Now that things are coming down, that dread has turned into the urgency tipsy speaks of.

The Reverend, Saturday, 14 February 2009 00:06 (seventeen years ago)

real ppl

The Reverend, Saturday, 14 February 2009 00:07 (seventeen years ago)

yeah i think part of what makes something like "my president" work is that he's equally concerned about his president and his lamborghini. it's honest, and also funny.

jeezy just takes his albums super seriously and refuses to have any bullshit on them. no verse is wasted. no lame guests. no beat isn't on-theme. he just goes in and makes big statement albums and people love him for that cuz they can just throw the disc in the car and know they're gonna be feeling the whole thing.

autogoblin (surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally), Saturday, 14 February 2009 00:09 (seventeen years ago)

he leaves the bullshit to his RnB guest spots

autogoblin (surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally), Saturday, 14 February 2009 00:10 (seventeen years ago)

Well, it would have been totally wrong for him to pretend that he wasn't rich or he was really poor or whatever. I think he puts himself in it perfectly. It's really not a political album but there is a real sense of 'no matter your bank balance or job or whatever, someone has fucked up so badly that we are all effected and hurt by it' off screen. And then to try and do your best and enjoy what you have (in this case, his lambo) regardless.

raaaaaaaaaah (a hoy hoy), Saturday, 14 February 2009 00:10 (seventeen years ago)

can you imagine a super-serious recession themed album by, say, Jay-Z

basically, i don't listen to a ton of Jeezy but i def respect him and what he represents in the game and i am totally glad he finished high just because, i dunno, he's is a real* hip hop dude to me, doing real* shit. and he's definitely got that epic scale to me, like his big budget widescreen stuff like put on really works.

*lol "realness" but fuck it shit like that matters to me

And then to try and do your best and enjoy what you have (in this case, his lambo) regardless.

and the lambo represents achievement too. in a different way than a black president, but they're both basically emblems of beating the odds.

i also just have always dug his delivery, he gets more range out of his rasp than it seems like is there at first. the way a line like "just look at 'em fly" sounds fatalistic and hopeful at the same time.

paper plans (tipsy mothra), Saturday, 14 February 2009 00:19 (seventeen years ago)

yeah like to me, i get the sense that tons of jeezy's fans, if they ever made it up out of the trap a la jeezy, would get a blue lambo and would be goddamned if their rims weren't too. ppl really liked to clown that line i think, but imo it's so in touch w/ his fan base (im speculating here obv). i feel teh same way about "when they see me out in traffic they say jeezy on some other shit" - ppl want to hear him rap about being rich because it inspires them to be so. the blue lambo line is maybe the most inspiring line about obama in popular music imo
