Hunt3r, Friday, 10 May 2013 10:41 (thirteen years ago)

I love having people round for food and boardgames and minimal techno.

This pretty much describes 90% of the parties at my house.

silverfish, Friday, 10 May 2013 12:17 (thirteen years ago)

i loved that death and taxes review

This is a monumental track – nearly 8 minutes in length – that left this reviewer close to ecstatic tears. Eh fuck you, I’ve waited years for this album, and this is the best return to form I can think of for them. Outstanding.

and:

All I have written here is “MY GOD,” circled it multiple times, and there may be possible tear marks on the paper from when I practically wept at the sheer fucking brilliance of this song. “Contact” is childlike in its simplicity, but don’t let that fool you: by a minute in the song will be stuck in your head for days, weeks, forever. This is a song that will leave you pounding the desk or wall for more by the end of it. The last 30 seconds sound like an entire orchestra is falling on you. There is nothing to compare this to. Jawdropping. Simply incredible. Awe inspiring in the truest sense of the word. I don’t want to spoil this track. It’s a phenomenon.

with this in between:

I didn’t take any notes here. I was too busy talking to the label rep guy. There was wine at the listening party. It was my birthday.

gr8080, Friday, 10 May 2013 12:21 (thirteen years ago)

That's a very good description of Contact.

"Isn't there a strong rumour that iTunes will be streaming the album from the 13th? So it'll instantly "leak" then (although in shitty quality)."

iTunes doesn't stream music at all, so this would be interesting to say the least.

studyplenty, Friday, 10 May 2013 13:26 (thirteen years ago)

iTunes Store bruh

乒乓, Friday, 10 May 2013 13:27 (thirteen years ago)

I really hope it doesn't leak. I want my first experience with it to be the vinyl I've pre-ordered and if it leaks I won't have the discipline to not listen to it.

food and boardgames and minimal techno (NotEnough), Friday, 10 May 2013 13:29 (thirteen years ago)

iTunes does streaming of purchased stuff direct to Apple TV, now.

mh, Friday, 10 May 2013 13:46 (thirteen years ago)

iTunes doesn't stream music at all, so this would be interesting to say the least.

They've done it at least twice this year already with the David Bowie and Justin Timberlake albums.

MarkoP, Friday, 10 May 2013 14:04 (thirteen years ago)

w/ vampire weekend too iirc

iatee, Friday, 10 May 2013 14:05 (thirteen years ago)

I meant streaming as in listen to the entire album for free via iTunes Store a week or so before its release (like they did with Phoenix, Vampire Weekend and numerous other albums)

groovypanda, Friday, 10 May 2013 14:07 (thirteen years ago)

I think they're actually calling themself iStreamAlbumPreviewsLeakyLeaky now.

kind of disappointed that Thomas has lost his English stutter

ḉrut (crüt), Friday, 10 May 2013 14:35 (thirteen years ago)

Feeling very jealous right now about the parties some of y'all are having. I don't know nearly enough people in Austin who enjoy board games + dance music. We got the green chilli pork covered though...

Video defo delivers.

Man, it makes me think how awesome it would have been if Daft Punk had asked Mark E. Smith to collaborate, just for the accompanying video alone

Le Bateau Ivre, Friday, 10 May 2013 17:58 (thirteen years ago)

The Daft Punk/Phantom of the Paradise connection seems really obvious now, but it somehow never occurred to me.

According to a Guardian interview with Daft Punk, "Hundreds of bands may tout cinematic references, yet few have them as hard-wired as Daft Punk. Guy-Man and Thomas met two decades ago this year, at the perfect cinema-going ages of 13 and 12... the one movie which they saw together more than 20 times was Phantom of the Paradise, Brian De Palma's 1974 rock musical, based loosely around Phantom of the Opera (both this and Electroma feature 'a hero with a black leather outfit and a helmet').

circa1916, Friday, 10 May 2013 18:07 (thirteen years ago)

Not as obvious as the link between Bob Sinclar/Phantom:

Is that music clip just a slowed-down, warped and crusted up bit of "Get Lucky"?

Instant Crush apparently sounds like Room on Fire era Strokes meets The Cars, sounds great!

Kitchen Person, Friday, 10 May 2013 23:11 (thirteen years ago)

Also I had a dream last night that I found a download of the album and started listening to it. Apparently all this hype has gotten to me in quite a big way.

The Reverend, Saturday, 11 May 2013 04:57 (thirteen years ago)

I think he says he got sober 23 years ago. I don't know why it would be "2 aa" for anyone, he spends about 15 seconds talking about that.

DonkeyTeeth, Saturday, 11 May 2013 08:13 (thirteen years ago)

Oh sorry, read through that too quickly.

DonkeyTeeth, Saturday, 11 May 2013 08:14 (thirteen years ago)

One minute cell-phone leak of Doin' It Right ft. Panda Bear

Le Bateau Ivre, Saturday, 11 May 2013 17:44 (thirteen years ago)

lol no way these leaks aren't done without the auspices of DP

乒乓, Saturday, 11 May 2013 17:50 (thirteen years ago)

that sounds pretty promising
