Ok it's legit and it's good, makes me excited for the rest of the album. Not much happening here though; great Chic guitars leading the song (Niles should def feature in every track), an ocassional synth arpeggio (a la Hall and Oates I cant go for that) and vocoded voices repeating the lyrics (which sound like 'let the music get your life, give life back to music"). Sounds cool as an intro.

Isn't there a strong rumour that iTunes will be streaming the album from the 13th? So it'll instantly "leak" then (although in shitty quality).

Another early review. A comparison to Air's 10000hz is dropped at one track, found it funny considering it was predicted upthread.
― Moka, Friday, 10 May 2013 08:28 (thirteen years ago)
There is no standout “One More Time,” nor is this a party album. This is a party album made by people who have graduated to more sophisticated parties.
so it's...a party album?
― random accies memories (Sgt. Biscuits), Friday, 10 May 2013 08:55 (thirteen years ago)
Ugh, "sophisticated parties". What a way to put people off.

I love having people round for food and boardgames and minimal techno.

I don't know if Nick's being sarcastic but that sounds great
― charli.xlsx (sic), Friday, 10 May 2013 09:42 (thirteen years ago)
I do honestly play minimal when i have friends round for tea (though i am 23 so a 'dinnner party' is burger and chips or whatever)
― the Shearer of simulated snowsex etc. (Dwight Yorke), Friday, 10 May 2013 09:51 (thirteen years ago)
I'm totally not being sarcastic. Bro-in-law was round last night and we played Carcassonne and listened to Four Tet and a Kompakt compilation (he didn't come round for food yesterday but he did last weekend and we did the same).
― they all are afflicted with a sickness of existence (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 10 May 2013 09:55 (thirteen years ago)
I'm 34 so the dinner party is like green pork chilli followed by brownies with pistacchio gelato or whatever.
― they all are afflicted with a sickness of existence (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 10 May 2013 09:56 (thirteen years ago)
Fuck a pork tbh but Carcassonne is the best.
― dschinghis kraan (NickB), Friday, 10 May 2013 10:03 (thirteen years ago)
every time i have/go to dinner party it ends with everyone being absolutely hammered and dancing to house/disco youtubes, "all that she wants" by wham is always played, as is "amazing" by george michael and probably "fast love", the dj spen remix of brother by angie stone, arto mwambe's remix of manuel tur.
it's kind of formulaic and sometimes i think we really should reboot our circle of friends/interests, but it is fun. over the last few years the quality of the food and wine is the only thing that's changed. #middleclass

i loved that death and taxes review
This is a monumental track – nearly 8 minutes in length – that left this reviewer close to ecstatic tears. Eh fuck you, I’ve waited years for this album, and this is the best return to form I can think of for them. Outstanding.
and:
All I have written here is “MY GOD,” circled it multiple times, and there may be possible tear marks on the paper from when I practically wept at the sheer fucking brilliance of this song. “Contact” is childlike in its simplicity, but don’t let that fool you: by a minute in the song will be stuck in your head for days, weeks, forever. This is a song that will leave you pounding the desk or wall for more by the end of it. The last 30 seconds sound like an entire orchestra is falling on you. There is nothing to compare this to. Jawdropping. Simply incredible. Awe inspiring in the truest sense of the word. I don’t want to spoil this track. It’s a phenomenon.
with this in between:
I didn’t take any notes here. I was too busy talking to the label rep guy. There was wine at the listening party. It was my birthday.
― gr8080, Friday, 10 May 2013 12:21 (thirteen years ago)
That's a very good description of Contact.

"Isn't there a strong rumour that iTunes will be streaming the album from the 13th? So it'll instantly "leak" then (although in shitty quality)."
iTunes doesn't stream music at all, so this would be interesting to say the least.
― studyplenty, Friday, 10 May 2013 13:26 (thirteen years ago)
iTunes Store bruh
― 乒乓, Friday, 10 May 2013 13:27 (thirteen years ago)
I really hope it doesn't leak. I want my first experience with it to be the vinyl I've pre-ordered and if it leaks I won't have the discipline to not listen to it.
― food and boardgames and minimal techno (NotEnough), Friday, 10 May 2013 13:29 (thirteen years ago)
iTunes does streaming of purchased stuff direct to Apple TV, now.
― mh, Friday, 10 May 2013 13:46 (thirteen years ago)
They've done it at least twice this year already with the David Bowie and Justin Timberlake albums.
― MarkoP, Friday, 10 May 2013 14:04 (thirteen years ago)
w/ vampire weekend too iirc
― iatee, Friday, 10 May 2013 14:05 (thirteen years ago)
I meant streaming as in listen to the entire album for free via iTunes Store a week or so before its release (like they did with Phoenix, Vampire Weekend and numerous other albums)

The Daft Punk/Phantom of the Paradise connection seems really obvious now, but it somehow never occurred to me.
According to a Guardian interview with Daft Punk, "Hundreds of bands may tout cinematic references, yet few have them as hard-wired as Daft Punk. Guy-Man and Thomas met two decades ago this year, at the perfect cinema-going ages of 13 and 12... the one movie which they saw together more than 20 times was Phantom of the Paradise, Brian De Palma's 1974 rock musical, based loosely around Phantom of the Opera (both this and Electroma feature 'a hero with a black leather outfit and a helmet').

Not as obvious as the link between Bob Sinclar/Phantom:
