conversely, I like Kanye more with each subsequent album (tho if pressed I'd probably agree that Late Registration is his best)

lol i don't know, reactions were totally mixed. i gave it twenty points at leastof the two albums i positively loved and lived last year--OM and erykah--OM offered so many chances to be drawn in. i can see people liking it for an enormous amount of different reasons, which means they could have gotten a lot of 2-5 point votes. badu, on the other hand, i can't see having a point-per-vote of less than 14 or 15. it's one of those records where if you liked it, i can't imagine how you didnt totally immerse yourself in it and have it as one of your top three

so is no 13 more rap more r&b or more electrodribble?

(also poor "Pinocchio Story", what a load of balls)(although there was a moment where I thought it was on the verge of greatness until I realized he'd said "there is no GUCCI I could buy")
― Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Friday, 13 February 2009 22:44 (seventeen years ago)
i never listened to it, thought it was okay on snl tho
― big fatass rick ross (J0rdan S.), Friday, 13 February 2009 22:44 (seventeen years ago)
what's weird about 808 is that's the technopop/electro/nuwave vibe is not uncommon in rap, but this sounds WAY more like straight indie electrodribble than any other rap/R&B record i've ever heard. which is, i think, what he was shooting for
― contenderizer, Friday, 13 February 2009 22:44 (seventeen years ago)
so is 'indie electrodribble' in the ilx canon to the point where i'm gonna have to read that thread?

no

First spin through, I'm hearing a lot of New Order, OMD and Cocteau Twins references. All very good stuff, and track 3 in particular with the girl's vocals is *killer*, that drum part, WOW. Love this album so far.
― stephen
one of the best albums of 08
thought id throw that down because it seems to be getting no love in the best of 08 threads. no album has captured the spirit and feel of the 80's like this in a long time.
― gman
Every time I think I'm totally over this album, I go back and put it on again and it's fucking awesome.

did not vote for this but certainly am down w/it

This is starting out promising but that album cover is begging me to punch it in the throat.
― Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Friday, 13 February 2009 22:48 (seventeen years ago)
I tried listening to that M83 album but it sounded really 80s in a bad way
― i want to see you in your pantyhose (The Brainwasher), Friday, 13 February 2009 22:49 (seventeen years ago)
i need to go back to that one. there was a song io really liked like a year ago that i can't remember now
― Jewish Lager (k3vin k.), Friday, 13 February 2009 22:49 (seventeen years ago)
Some really nice tracks on this. Not as good as the previous one, IMO
― there's no antivote to (country matters), Friday, 13 February 2009 22:49 (seventeen years ago)
it sounded nothing like the other stuff of theirs I'm familiar with like the first single from their last album and "Run Into Flowers" or whatever that song is called
― i want to see you in your pantyhose (The Brainwasher), Friday, 13 February 2009 22:50 (seventeen years ago)
Dan, the album's a lot better than its cover may suggest.
― ilxor, Friday, 13 February 2009 22:50 (seventeen years ago)
this is a great record, except whenever i listen to it, i don't like it much
― contenderizer, Friday, 13 February 2009 22:50 (seventeen years ago)
didn't vote for it but support it - "we own the night" is my jam
― big fatass rick ross (J0rdan S.), Friday, 13 February 2009 22:50 (seventeen years ago)
I guess I am a hopeless obscurantist because I haven't heard a lot of these higher placing ones, I think I would like Santogold and hate Fleet Foxes. The Dream sounds too glossy for me, M83 never did much but maybe I shoudl reinvestigate.
Can't check out the videos b/c I am on a ridiculous slow 3rd world computer right now.

"Kim and Jessie"
"Graveyard Girl"
― ilxor, Friday, 13 February 2009 22:51 (seventeen years ago)
Loved 'Kim & Jessie', the rest I could take or leave, but mostly leave. Will have to revisit it to see if it clicks this time.

kim and jessie, you really can't fuck w/ that song

This sound is much better for them:
― i want to see you in your pantyhose (The Brainwasher), Friday, 13 February 2009 22:56 (seventeen years ago)
"kim and jesse" is one of the better tracks. as mentioned, so is "we own the sky"
other M83 that is +
― contenderizer, Friday, 13 February 2009 22:56 (seventeen years ago)
"don't save us from the flames" is kind of untoppable tho
― big fatass rick ross (J0rdan S.), Friday, 13 February 2009 22:57 (seventeen years ago)
Jeez, sounds like Air trying to play Bruce Springsteen songs.
― Frank Sumatra (NickB), Friday, 13 February 2009 22:57 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah, of the two singles that people seem to talk about, "Graveyard Girl" has always seemed a little superficial in its pleasures, a little too Sofia Coppola end-credits maybe, but "Kim & Jessie" is really great.
― Bianca Jagger (jaymc), Friday, 13 February 2009 22:58 (seventeen years ago)
Given that I only just recently discovered that, total aversion to "Sexy Boy" aside, I really like Air, that is kind of a huge endorsement for me.
― Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Friday, 13 February 2009 22:58 (seventeen years ago)
The singles are my least favorite songs in the album, actually.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Friday, 13 February 2009 22:59 (seventeen years ago)
i feel like i should like "graveyard girl" and "don't save us from the flames", opening moments and basic sound are fantastic, but they don't do anything for me once i absorb the general gist. the preserved-in-amber vibe is clearly intentional, but it kills the songs dead, afaic
― contenderizer, Friday, 13 February 2009 23:01 (seventeen years ago)
I'll pimp this again. I edited the annoying spoken part of "Graveyard Girl" out and it really makes it a better song.

so I can extrapolate the Cut Copy is gonna do well here, right?
also "Skin of the Night" is giving me massive Cocteaus vibes, mmmmm
― Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Friday, 13 February 2009 23:03 (seventeen years ago)
cut copy might be top 3
― big fatass rick ross (J0rdan S.), Friday, 13 February 2009 23:03 (seventeen years ago)
looots of praise in that theard iirc
skin of the night is the best track, along with couleurs

YES!
― ilxor, Friday, 13 February 2009 23:05 (seventeen years ago)
yeah i said it on another thread but M83 sort of freaks me out because it sounds *really* 80s like how stuff in the 80s actually sounded, not like how bands like Interpol or something are supposed to sound like the 80s but really don't at all....like that "kim and jessie" song is on some, man, i dunno Glass Tiger shit or something...all that stuff sort of makes me feel weird cuz it reminds me of being a little kid and stuff...seems poignant for no reason.
― Yo, I just copped dat brand new Manity Kane cd. (M@tt He1ges0n), Friday, 13 February 2009 23:05 (seventeen years ago)
"Couleurs"
omg there's a 9 and a half-minute version
― there's no antivote to (country matters), Friday, 13 February 2009 23:07 (seventeen years ago)
omg I can totally imagine Emilio Estevez and Ally Sheedy running into each other's arms from across a football field to "Graveyard Girl". It's like all of the best parts of Echo & the Bunnymen and The Psychedelic Furs stuck together.
― Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Friday, 13 February 2009 23:08 (seventeen years ago)
what's with the covert mbv refs in the instrumental sounds?
