only used the dr. evil line because heartless is the single i keep hearing, but the lyric is stoopid.

(Basically, I'm arguing that had he tried to go for a more balanced tone on that song, it wouldn't have worked because the carnival sideshow backing track would have run roughshod over it.)

Well obviously we disagree on whether or not it "works".
― let's get high off our own supply (The Brainwasher), Friday, 13 February 2009 22:13 (seventeen years ago)
Which is okay
I just disagree with you about it 'working' - he sounds really stupid and bitter, the "spoiled little L.A. girl" thing makes me think "damn dude no wonder she broke up with your ass" - and I can't even enjoy it in a "this is so bad it's good" way, it's just annoying.
― let's get high off our own supply (The Brainwasher), Friday, February 13, 2009 5:00 PM (7 minutes ago) dude for me it's not a 'so bad it's good' thing; i really appreciate the way kanye has chosen to make this a "moment in time" piece rather than a carefully-planned epic. it really cpatures the way you feel when your heart is broken (whether you deserved it or not) and who doesnt say or think those kinds of things when they're hurt? to me, it really establishes the album's character as vulnerable and redeemable and makes the whole thing infinitely more relateable. jsut one of the reasons it works so well imo.
many many xposts lol or exactly what jordan said! we are on the same page

my God "Amazing" is great
possibly the most amazing thing about it is how great Jeezy is on it considering that most of the time I hate him
― Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Friday, 13 February 2009 22:23 (seventeen years ago)
that edge-of-the-world beat really works for him - also added oomph from ye dropping the track before his verse comes in

I'M AMAZINGYEAH IM ALL THATIF I AINT ON THE GRINDTHEN WHAT YOU CALL THAT
shit doesn't even have anything to do w/ the album but it's still so poignant imo
― big fatass rick ross (J0rdan S.), Friday, 13 February 2009 22:26 (seventeen years ago)
okay j0rdan I don't mean to antagonize you butttttt..... how is that 'poignant'? it's just a generic jeezy rhyme

just getting my complaining out of the way now and we don't have to discuss it further, i'm really surprised of montreal did not place; i checked the other thread and counted 51.5 points on people prematurely posting their ballots alone, and seeing as the #50 album had only 80 points, i thought it would poke into the bottom fifth somewhere for sure
― some black dude (k3vin k.), Friday, 13 February 2009 22:30 (seventeen years ago)
of montreal is #13
― let's get high off our own supply (The Brainwasher), Friday, 13 February 2009 22:31 (seventeen years ago)
anywaythey don't know you like I dothey'll never know you
The emotional manipulation in this song is breathtaking. More than half of this album is like a laundry list of reasons for no one to ever fuck Kanye again!

I'm happy to have been quoted re. 808s, I love it now more than I did a few months ago. It's indie-friendly electrodribble!
― Euler, Friday, 13 February 2009 22:36 (seventeen years ago)
and it is
― contenderizer, Friday, 13 February 2009 22:36 (seventeen years ago)
hmm, my indifference to fleet foxes strikes an almost perfect balance with my indifference to kanye. ok, not quite. at least kanye's on my ipod. until i need the space. i know this is a boring thing to say, but my interest in kanye has declined about 20 percent with every album. (still listen to college dropout some.)
― paper plans (tipsy mothra), Friday, 13 February 2009 22:37 (seventeen years ago)
It's indie-friendly electrodribble!
maybe this is part of the reason I don't like it that much? The beat on "Paranoid" is very clunky to me for some reason/
― i want to see you in your pantyhose (The Brainwasher), Friday, 13 February 2009 22:39 (seventeen years ago)
conversely, I like Kanye more with each subsequent album (tho if pressed I'd probably agree that Late Registration is his best)
― Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Friday, 13 February 2009 22:39 (seventeen years ago)
lol i don't know, reactions were totally mixed. i gave it twenty points at leastof the two albums i positively loved and lived last year--OM and erykah--OM offered so many chances to be drawn in. i can see people liking it for an enormous amount of different reasons, which means they could have gotten a lot of 2-5 point votes. badu, on the other hand, i can't see having a point-per-vote of less than 14 or 15. it's one of those records where if you liked it, i can't imagine how you didnt totally immerse yourself in it and have it as one of your top three
xxxxxpost

― big fatass rick ross (J0rdan S.), Friday, 13 February 2009 22:44 (seventeen years ago)
what's weird about 808 is that's the technopop/electro/nuwave vibe is not uncommon in rap, but this sounds WAY more like straight indie electrodribble than any other rap/R&B record i've ever heard. which is, i think, what he was shooting for
― contenderizer, Friday, 13 February 2009 22:44 (seventeen years ago)
so is 'indie electrodribble' in the ilx canon to the point where i'm gonna have to read that thread?
