This Kelly Polar album sounds almost nothing like what I imagined!

Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Friday, 13 February 2009 19:42 (seventeen years ago)

I quite like it, it's sort of... modal disco.

Maximo Park Ji-Sung (Matt DC), Friday, 13 February 2009 19:44 (seventeen years ago)

I know we already discussed Ne-Yo yesterday... but this deserves a post here:

Okay, way better than I expected. Why didn't someone tell me that only one of her songs was a half-rate MIA knockoff?

This is such a great album, especially like first half which is kind of perfect. 'Say Aha'!!!

someone who seems to only rep for ghastly prefab autotuned pop (The Brainwasher), Friday, 13 February 2009 19:46 (seventeen years ago)

By all rights I should hate that album cover but I really, really love it.

Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Friday, 13 February 2009 19:47 (seventeen years ago)

(btw I have decided recently that "Starstruck" is easily the album's standout song)

Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Friday, 13 February 2009 19:47 (seventeen years ago)

Now goes by Santigold, fyi.

ilxor, Friday, 13 February 2009 19:48 (seventeen years ago)

My favorite song keeps changing, but "Starstruck" has held the title several times.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 13 February 2009 19:48 (seventeen years ago)

Artist such as Jay-Z, Fabolous, Chris Brown and Lil Mama have all re-recorded verses on to the "A Milli" beat. But it was Neyo's verse, which Neyo said "is not a Chris Brown diss", that sparked internet mayhem and became the #3 most downloaded song on iTunes.

someone give the bg on this drama because i totally missed it.

lil waynes babymama (musically), Friday, 13 February 2009 19:48 (seventeen years ago)

This is first thing I voted for that's ranked.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 13 February 2009 19:49 (seventeen years ago)

I guess this is a good time to ask - I've heard the band Missing Persons mentioned as an influence for Santogold, J*Davey and a few other groups I really like... what album of theirs should I check out?

someone who seems to only rep for ghastly prefab autotuned pop (The Brainwasher), Friday, 13 February 2009 19:49 (seventeen years ago)

Accoring to Ne-Yo Chris Brown has bad body odor

someone who seems to only rep for ghastly prefab autotuned pop (The Brainwasher), Friday, 13 February 2009 19:50 (seventeen years ago)

that ne-yo 'a milli' freestyle is so great. "i ain't lyin', man you're girlfriend's favourite song is mine"!

Get Spring Session M, and then a best of comp.

Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Friday, 13 February 2009 19:52 (seventeen years ago)

yeah his was pretty good, i imagine somewhere out there there's a mashup of all the new verses

lil waynes babymama (musically), Friday, 13 February 2009 19:52 (seventeen years ago)

listening to Ne-Yo rap is unpleasant. doesn't have the voice for it.

some dude, Friday, 13 February 2009 19:54 (seventeen years ago)

i like the santogold album cover cuz she's not violently vomiting, she's so nonchalant about it

the album is really good i agree

happy house of representatives (J0rdan S.), Friday, 13 February 2009 19:56 (seventeen years ago)

i don't really feel the second half of santogold's album, but MAN the first four tracks are incredible. 'l.e.s. artistes' is like an anthem for anyone who's ever worked in the creative industries - the drum break just before she launches into the chorus (and what a chorus) for the last time is such a thrilling moment. i love the lyrics, too - it's a narrative that anyone who's ever moved to a city to escape small-town drudgery in search of nebulous "creative freedom", only to find that cities have drudgery all of their own, should identify with; there's a really great combination of self-doubt and determination in it.

lex pretend, Friday, 13 February 2009 19:57 (seventeen years ago)

the rock songs are way better than the "creator" stuff

happy house of representatives (J0rdan S.), Friday, 13 February 2009 19:57 (seventeen years ago)

i like the second half... "lights out", "startstruck", "i'm a lady" (<- esp)

happy house of representatives (J0rdan S.), Friday, 13 February 2009 19:58 (seventeen years ago)

"my superman" is one of my faves

someone who seems to only rep for ghastly prefab autotuned pop (The Brainwasher), Friday, 13 February 2009 19:59 (seventeen years ago)

agreed w brainwasher. there was all this ilm talk about "creator" when this came out, but it ended up being my least favorite good song on the record.

contenderizer, Friday, 13 February 2009 20:00 (seventeen years ago)

I knew absolutely nothing about it when I bought it, only that people were comparing her to M.I.A. The first play was really, really great and subsequent plays have gotten better.

I discovered several months after the fact that my brother is good friends with her cousin. I am trying to figure out how I can work this tenuous connection into a backup singer gig.

xp: I would like "My Superman" more if it wasn't such a BLATANT rip of Siouxsie & the Banshees' "Red Light".

Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Friday, 13 February 2009 20:03 (seventeen years ago)

i love how grumpy she is, there's this snarling chronic misanthropy running through her album which just really perfectly captures situations like, i dunno, rush hour commuting, or interminable business meetings with terrible people, or enduring people bullshitting at you for hours on end. you can tell she worked in a&r! stuff like "shove your hope where it don't shine" and that great 'l.e.s. artistes' couplet - "stop tryna catch my eye, i see you good you false faker, just make it easy you're my enemy you fast talker".

i also love how it's mostly about disillusionment but also ultimately hope, thanks to those melodic/musical rushes - i really wish more indie sounded as crystal-clean and rocking as those first four tracks.

lex pretend, Friday, 13 February 2009 20:05 (seventeen years ago)

Thanks Dan -- not sure how I didn't make that connection myself, as a big Siouxsie fan. xpost

ilxor, Friday, 13 February 2009 20:06 (seventeen years ago)

(in fairness it's intentional; I just am not as enamored of the end result as I feel I should be)

Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Friday, 13 February 2009 20:07 (seventeen years ago)

"Surrender Your Heart" isn't the finest example of Missing Persons at their best, but the "technology" in this video is total LULZ

Johnny Fever, Friday, 13 February 2009 20:08 (seventeen years ago)

Basically that opening guitar riff from "L.E.S. Artistes" is exactly how you should start an album, and the clattering jumble it segues into with "You'll Find A Way" is even better.

Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Friday, 13 February 2009 20:11 (seventeen years ago)

"computer paintbox"

but yeah, not one of yr better missing persons tunes

contenderizer, Friday, 13 February 2009 20:14 (seventeen years ago)

Dan, I'm curious what you thought Kelley Polar would sound like?

Bianca Jagger (jaymc), Friday, 13 February 2009 20:17 (seventeen years ago)

I must be alone in preferring pretty much all the guitar tracks on her album to L.E.S Artistes.

Maximo Park Ji-Sung (Matt DC), Friday, 13 February 2009 20:20 (seventeen years ago)

i'd only heard "creator" when i got the album, so i expected it to be more in that vein -- which would have been fine, but i was happily surprised that it turned out to be a sort of new wave thrift-store shopping spree.

album of the decade i think

― goole

“Livin’ A Lie” most likely isn’t even my favourite song on The-Dream’s debut album ‘Love/Hate’, although that’s probably just a reflection of its absurd strength – how do you choose between the shiny R Kelly bounce of “Shawty Is Da Shit”, the flawless Prince revivalism of “Fast Car”, the bitter dirge “Nikki”, the apocalyptic “She Needs My Love”, the irresistible glide of “Playin’ in her Hair”, the sumptuous coital sludge of “Purple Kisses”, the sci-fi club joint “Ditch That”, the architectural magnificence of “Luv Songs” or the tearjerker ballad “Mama”???

Someone post a youtube, because searching "the dream" is useless if you don't know what song to look for.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 13 February 2009 20:35 (seventeen years ago)

lol no seriously though I remember when I kept talking about The-Dream and everyone ignored me, and then everbody hated on it, so it's cool to see him place now and become a part of the ILM cannon so to speak
