It's just remixes/remakes/versions. Really surprised it's this high, although I probably put it quite high myself.

@Contenderizer, Arthur Russell's album kinda is a country album. But yeah, it's way different. Maybe this year all the hip-hop and pop records moved from 50-20 to 20-1?

it's really striking, this! i didn't vote last year but that list makes so much more sense.

and seriously, where is the house and techno this year? last year you had stuff like pantha du prince and gui boratto in there...this year, a total absence.

factors contributing to relative lack of rap in this poll:

a) ilx has always been pretty obscurantist/indie, the chart pop/rap element has only ever been notable compared to other "we listen to everything!" type music message boards
b) board newbies the last couple years seem to skew more indie than maybe a few years previous
c) rap's in a really weird place lately, concensus tightening around a small handful of A-list artists (which, for lack of a better term, let's call "the guys on Swagga Like Us"), while it's never been more fractured in terms of what new artists to watch and which minor ones are still interesting or becoming more interesting
d) ringtone cru apathy twd voting in this poll or having its own poll
e) a pretty strong concensus among rap fans in general than it's not a great time for the genre, or at least way more good or okay albums than great ones

b) board newbies the last couple years seem to skew more indie than maybe a few years previous

Lex, what house and techno albums would have placed though? I can't really think of any - Shedding The Past won't get in here, neither will Anja Schneider, neither quite have the crossover potential. There hasn't really been a big Kompakt album or anything either.

I think Lupe Fiasco's The Cool might have placed, were it not released in January of this year...

yeah there was certainly nothing this year w/ the name recognition of gui ("beautiful life" was pretty popular) or the field

I think the fact that you need to pay attention to lots of small scenes makes it hard to create a consensus as well - it was much easier when most hiphop just came from about 5 different places. Instead now I know there is a different sound here, there and everywhere but don't have to time to listen to it all, figure out what I like, who to follow etc.

(I expect Lindstrom to place top ten but that doesn't really count... otherwise?)

don't think any would have placed highly but i'd have thought that if the made-up ambient dronez could place, then shed, trus'me or mlle caro & franck garcia could have as well...or what about the robert hood or âme fabric mixes? i thought the bobbins crew were quite hyped about those.

i feel like i'm reading this post wrong or maybe there's a word missing, but it was released in December '07. also that didn't stop a lot of people for stumping for, say, The-Dream's album (which was released a week earlier) as an '08 album.

one of the things that seems to most dominate the list so far is what i'd call design magazine aesthetics (courtesy of d-mag hipsters?). music that is fastidious, formally intriguing, often (but not necessarily) quiet/minimal, tied to a sometimes "experimental" or "avant garde" context, and almost ruthless coherent in its aesthetics. applies as much to earth & studio as to gas & fennesz.

This is one of the most polarizing albums of the year. The people who like it REALLY LOVE IT and the people who don't react as if it were a crime against humanity. (argument might be the tiniest bit overstated)

under-the-radar december releases will often get treated well in the following year's poll b/c people don't tend to pick them up until well into the next year (like the-dream - i only heard that in march or april, i think). hoping this will benefit anthony hamilton and brandy next year.
