I have to go to the shop so I can't be arsed checking myself but I at least searched for last years polls:

**********Just the trax, ma'am: THE ILX 2007 POLL RESULTS, part 1**********
**********Hot damn it's THE ILX 2007 POLL RESULTS, part 2**********

ilm hates rap

autogoblin (surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally), Friday, 13 February 2009 18:03 (seventeen years ago)

I think stuff that would have been big for ringtone folk was either hard to get hold of (abn, that crew who did rollin rollin etc.), mixtapes - so again quite hard to get hold of (killer mike).

idk, i wasn't exactly expecting these to place but it would've been nice, and not too much of a reach, to see one or two of nappy roots, bun b, gucci mane, roots manuva, wiley or lil' mama - none of which were particularly obscure or hard to acquire - place in the 21-50 section. don't think any of them will now :(

also, didn't ilm use to like dancehall once?? not even a single dancehall track placed.

lex pretend, Friday, 13 February 2009 18:03 (seventeen years ago)

Also, I'm pretty certain that the big 4 (kanye, wayne, jeezy, t.i) will place very high, if only because they didn't have much competition as the big picks. plus, except for especially the kanye, they're all great.

Oh do you see what I did right there? ;-)

ilxor, Friday, 13 February 2009 18:04 (seventeen years ago)

btw i don't think deej, m@tt, whiney, preview of the matrix 12 etc voted, thus lowering the chances of ringtone shit placing

happy house of representatives (J0rdan S.), Friday, 13 February 2009 18:05 (seventeen years ago)

i have sensed that non-superstar hip-hop has become much less of a floating-voter proposition in the last year or 2 - i have no idea why this is though. getting poptimists to listen to any of it is the proverbial blood/stone situation :(

lex pretend, Friday, 13 February 2009 18:06 (seventeen years ago)

I need to get that Nappy Roots, but again, quite hard to get hold of. Gucci only released mixtapes didn't he? Roots album wasn't loved, Wiley released two albums, one of which was rubbish and most prob. turned people off/split votes, lil mama should have been on last years etc.

i'm getting too old for this ship (a hoy hoy), Friday, 13 February 2009 18:06 (seventeen years ago)

Paper Trail is so not placing here.

Maximo Park Ji-Sung (Matt DC), Friday, 13 February 2009 18:07 (seventeen years ago)

Neither is Young Jeezy, for that matter.

Bianca Jagger (jaymc), Friday, 13 February 2009 18:08 (seventeen years ago)

4 metal albums placed last year - High On Fire, Jesu, Om,Alcest,

incidentally, can anyone remember whether the emancipation of mimi placed in 05? i'm not expecting e=mc2 to, sadly, but the lack of BIG diva pop albums (mariah, beyoncé etc) is kind of noticeable too.

lex pretend, Friday, 13 February 2009 18:09 (seventeen years ago)

I keep forgetting that this lot released another album

there's no antivote to (country matters), Friday, 13 February 2009 18:09 (seventeen years ago)

oh, and tuomas: that hector track from 72 that you posted way, way back is fantastic. no idea who "hector" is, but now i'm curious. thank you for that.

Hector is (alongside Pekka Streng and a few others) one of the pioneers of Finnish folk, though he's better known here for his later, more rock-oriented material. Anyway, his first solo album from 1972, where "Heinäpellolla" is from, is maybe the best Finnish folk-rock album ever made. Here's a proper download link for the tune:

http://www.zshare.net/audio/555734937e9627f3/

(If you want me to share the whole album, drop me an email.)

Tuomas, Friday, 13 February 2009 18:10 (seventeen years ago)

"also, didn't ilm use to like dancehall once??"

During the golden age of 2002-03 massive crossover dancehall yeah. Before and after then, kinda specialist. Although when there are three Finnish psych records in this list, FSVO 'specialist'.

Maximo Park Ji-Sung (Matt DC), Friday, 13 February 2009 18:10 (seventeen years ago)

I really doubt that if I had voted I would have pushed Bun B II Trill and Rick Ross Trilla into the top 50 cuz those would be two of my top 3

lotta xps

autogoblin (surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally), Friday, 13 February 2009 18:10 (seventeen years ago)

Me too. Ended up way high

Le Bateau Ivre, Friday, 13 February 2009 18:11 (seventeen years ago)

ha i had no idea that studio released another album! how did i not know that.

lex pretend, Friday, 13 February 2009 18:11 (seventeen years ago)

Just wait til people see 60-51 and the "oh I wish I had voted now" scenario happens

The User Formerly Known As Pfunkboy Latterly Known as.. (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 13 February 2009 18:12 (seventeen years ago)

It's a collection of their remixes, not an album proper.

Maximo Park Ji-Sung (Matt DC), Friday, 13 February 2009 18:12 (seventeen years ago)

wow, last year's 50-20 is a LOT more like what i'd expect from an ILM hit list. lots more hip-hop & chart pop, even a country record! less emphasis on obscurities & WTF cult stuff like 1/2 man 1/2 bisc.

contenderizer, Friday, 13 February 2009 18:12 (seventeen years ago)

It's just remixes/remakes/versions. Really surprised it's this high, although I probably put it quite high myself.

chord simple (j.o.n.a), Friday, 13 February 2009 18:13 (seventeen years ago)

Dan Lissvik, winnah.

Disco/Very (Roz), Friday, 13 February 2009 18:14 (seventeen years ago)

@Contenderizer, Arthur Russell's album kinda is a country album. But yeah, it's way different. Maybe this year all the hip-hop and pop records moved from 50-20 to 20-1?

Le Bateau Ivre, Friday, 13 February 2009 18:14 (seventeen years ago)

it's really striking, this! i didn't vote last year but that list makes so much more sense.

lex pretend, Friday, 13 February 2009 18:15 (seventeen years ago)

and seriously, where is the house and techno this year? last year you had stuff like pantha du prince and gui boratto in there...this year, a total absence.

lex pretend, Friday, 13 February 2009 18:15 (seventeen years ago)

Lex You could have it so much better.....with the ILM albums of 2005

The User Formerly Known As Pfunkboy Latterly Known as.. (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 13 February 2009 18:16 (seventeen years ago)

factors contributing to relative lack of rap in this poll:

a) ilx has always been pretty obscurantist/indie, the chart pop/rap element has only ever been notable compared to other "we listen to everything!" type music message boards
b) board newbies the last couple years seem to skew more indie than maybe a few years previous
c) rap's in a really weird place lately, concensus tightening around a small handful of A-list artists (which, for lack of a better term, let's call "the guys on Swagga Like Us"), while it's never been more fractured in terms of what new artists to watch and which minor ones are still interesting or becoming more interesting
d) ringtone cru apathy twd voting in this poll or having its own poll
e) a pretty strong concensus among rap fans in general than it's not a great time for the genre, or at least way more good or okay albums than great ones

some dude, Friday, 13 February 2009 18:17 (seventeen years ago)

b) board newbies the last couple years seem to skew more indie than maybe a few years previous

Oh, they'll come around... hopefully.

ilxor, Friday, 13 February 2009 18:18 (seventeen years ago)

Lex, what house and techno albums would have placed though? I can't really think of any - Shedding The Past won't get in here, neither will Anja Schneider, neither quite have the crossover potential. There hasn't really been a big Kompakt album or anything either.

Maximo Park Ji-Sung (Matt DC), Friday, 13 February 2009 18:18 (seventeen years ago)

I think Lupe Fiasco's The Cool might have placed, were it not released in January of this year...

ilxor, Friday, 13 February 2009 18:18 (seventeen years ago)

There haven't really been any house or techno albums that have united fans of either genre, total fragmented vote.

Maximo Park Ji-Sung (Matt DC), Friday, 13 February 2009 18:19 (seventeen years ago)

yeah there was certainly nothing this year w/ the name recognition of gui ("beautiful life" was pretty popular) or the field

happy house of representatives (J0rdan S.), Friday, 13 February 2009 18:20 (seventeen years ago)

I think the fact that you need to pay attention to lots of small scenes makes it hard to create a consensus as well - it was much easier when most hiphop just came from about 5 different places. Instead now I know there is a different sound here, there and everywhere but don't have to time to listen to it all, figure out what I like, who to follow etc.

i'm getting too old for this ship (a hoy hoy), Friday, 13 February 2009 18:20 (seventeen years ago)

(I expect Lindstrom to place top ten but that doesn't really count... otherwise?)

Maximo Park Ji-Sung (Matt DC), Friday, 13 February 2009 18:21 (seventeen years ago)

Incidentally anyone wondering about Yearbook Two needs to search 'Room Without A Key' like NOW. Unbelievably gorgeous.

Maximo Park Ji-Sung (Matt DC), Friday, 13 February 2009 18:22 (seventeen years ago)

don't think any would have placed highly but i'd have thought that if the made-up ambient dronez could place, then shed, trus'me or mlle caro & franck garcia could have as well...or what about the robert hood or âme fabric mixes? i thought the bobbins crew were quite hyped about those.

lex pretend, Friday, 13 February 2009 18:22 (seventeen years ago)

mlle caro & franck garcia's album was surely MADE for indie/techno crossover

lex pretend, Friday, 13 February 2009 18:22 (seventeen years ago)

or lol, even booka shade just on name recognition!

lex pretend, Friday, 13 February 2009 18:23 (seventeen years ago)

did teenpop albums ever do well I cant remember. I assume pop always dominated the singles polls but not albums

The User Formerly Known As Pfunkboy Latterly Known as.. (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 13 February 2009 18:23 (seventeen years ago)

Why bother to nominate mix albums when you can have the minimal vs deep house argument for the fiftieth time?

Maximo Park Ji-Sung (Matt DC), Friday, 13 February 2009 18:23 (seventeen years ago)

I think Lupe Fiasco's The Cool might have placed, were it not released in January of this year...

i feel like i'm reading this post wrong or maybe there's a word missing, but it was released in December '07. also that didn't stop a lot of people for stumping for, say, The-Dream's album (which was released a week earlier) as an '08 album.

some dude, Friday, 13 February 2009 18:23 (seventeen years ago)

one of the things that seems to most dominate the list so far is what i'd call design magazine aesthetics (courtesy of d-mag hipsters?). music that is fastidious, formally intriguing, often (but not necessarily) quiet/minimal, tied to a sometimes "experimental" or "avant garde" context, and almost ruthless coherent in its aesthetics. applies as much to earth & studio as to gas & fennesz.

contenderizer, Friday, 13 February 2009 18:23 (seventeen years ago)

I think Lupe Fiasco's The Cool might have placed, were it not released in January of this year...

This is one of the most polarizing albums of the year. The people who like it REALLY LOVE IT and the people who don't react as if it were a crime against humanity. (argument might be the tiniest bit overstated)

Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Friday, 13 February 2009 18:23 (seventeen years ago)

mlle caro & franck garcia's album was surely MADE for indie/techno crossover

I agree that might have had a big following on here (it is lovely) if anyone had ever actually talked about it.
