What makes a man start threads? (WilliamC), Friday, 10 May 2013 20:16 (thirteen years ago)

oh shit Tuomas's disco poll -- I will be either participating or following closely now that I'm newly obsessed!

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 10 May 2013 20:17 (thirteen years ago)

I was looking at the list and thinking how important Spotify has been to these polls, which is going to make Floyd a tough one.

What makes a man start threads? (WilliamC), Friday, 10 May 2013 20:19 (thirteen years ago)

pshaw

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 10 May 2013 20:20 (thirteen years ago)

I hope "Epic" by Faith No More wins the "epics" poll

far too much asshole flesh (DJP), Friday, 10 May 2013 20:23 (thirteen years ago)

VG, you're newly obsessed with disco? <3<3<3

Johnny Fever, Friday, 10 May 2013 20:25 (thirteen years ago)

yes!!! i bought a basic disco comp yesterday and after googling around and following a few links I have been down a Larry Levan rabbithole for like, 24 hours and counting now

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 10 May 2013 20:27 (thirteen years ago)

Disco's gonna be my favorite "learning & listening" poll.

Tarfumes The Escape Goat, Friday, 10 May 2013 20:29 (thirteen years ago)

Cooooool

Johnny Fever, Friday, 10 May 2013 20:30 (thirteen years ago)

Has Tuomas checked in lately? I'd hate to see the disco poll fizzle.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 10 May 2013 20:31 (thirteen years ago)

he showed up on the ILX Back to the Future thread the other day

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 10 May 2013 20:32 (thirteen years ago)

I'm really looking forward to the disco one, but it'll be another where I'll feel I'm not doing it justice. There's just so much of it. I mean I know a fair bit and love loads, but every time I read about it I find out about not just great new records, but whole new brilliant subgenres.

I just know I'll end up feeling such a fool putting Kelly Marie at no.1

Ismael Klata, Friday, 10 May 2013 21:12 (thirteen years ago)

Disco poll will own.

scintilla (seandalai), Saturday, 11 May 2013 01:58 (thirteen years ago)

37. New Order - Bee OK (voting opens next week, presumably)

this is happening. i feel so much pressure. i mean New Order is what of the bands that make ILM the best site on the internet.

Bee OK, Saturday, 11 May 2013 02:46 (thirteen years ago)

shat one

Bee OK, Saturday, 11 May 2013 02:47 (thirteen years ago)

ArchCarrier is rolling out SY results throughout the week -- I'd say start your engines anytime from Tuesday on.

What makes a man start threads? (WilliamC), Saturday, 11 May 2013 02:59 (thirteen years ago)

Just have to figure out what else to put on my ballot after all nine tracks from Technique.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 11 May 2013 03:14 (thirteen years ago)

Down for New Order, I know like two songs by them and one might be Joy Division, this'll be a good chance to remedy that.

Doctor Casino, Saturday, 11 May 2013 03:26 (thirteen years ago)

I will burn down ILM if "Regret" makes the top 20.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 11 May 2013 03:36 (thirteen years ago)

lol

Bee OK, Saturday, 11 May 2013 04:17 (thirteen years ago)

get yr kerosene ready johnny, i'd guess 'regret' is a lock for top 20

ArchCarrier, Saturday, 11 May 2013 08:28 (thirteen years ago)

I will burn down ILM if "Regret" makes the top 20.

― Johnny Fever

Yeah it's not looking good for ILM. I'm probably revealing a bit of a spoiler here to where it might end up on my list, it's my second favourite song of all time.

Kitchen Person, Saturday, 11 May 2013 08:35 (thirteen years ago)

Kinda sorta want the disco poll to open nominations now so everyone has a super duper long lead.

Not Simone Choule (Eric H.), Sunday, 12 May 2013 23:23 (thirteen years ago)

if i submitted a ballot for that poll "Regret" would be the only song on it

seanpennderizer (some dude), Sunday, 12 May 2013 23:37 (thirteen years ago)

Oh shit, I hadn't realised along with New Order the next few polls include the Motown and disco ones. I better start revising now! No idea how I'm going to handle those.

Kitchen Person, Monday, 13 May 2013 00:02 (thirteen years ago)

I guess Tuomas needs to check in and give some details about how the disco poll is going to go. If anybody sees him post in the next few days, would you let him know he's up soon? I'm out of town and hate posting from the ipad.

WmC, Monday, 13 May 2013 02:15 (thirteen years ago)

yeah I foresee the need for militant border policing on that one

scintilla (seandalai), Monday, 13 May 2013 02:36 (thirteen years ago)

Not that I'm volunteering, but would there be any interest in a bluegrass and/or old timey poll? Mostly I want an excuse to finally explore it.

Gregor Sansa (Leee), Monday, 13 May 2013 03:33 (thirteen years ago)

The way I thought the disco poll would work is that before the nomination thread I will compile a large list of classic tunes that are all eligible for voting, and on top of that there'll be nominations. This is to ensure no essential tunes are left out because no one remembered to nom them, but people's personal favourites are in too.

Also, this may be controversial, but I think "I Feel Love" would be disqualified from the poll, because if it's included, we all know it's gonna win. This would mean there'd more excitement about the #1, because there's no other super obvious winner.

Also I'm still not sure whether or not to have a cut-off year for the nominations. On the hand, I was considering that you can only vote for stuff released between 1973 and 1984, because pretty much all the classic disco tunes were released during that period, and the we wouldn't have to think whether house music or artists like Jamiroquai are valid. But on the other hand, that would leave out stuff like those new Tom Moulton remixes of classic Philly International tunes that came out a couple of years ago, and I think they should be included in the poll. Maybe a good compromise could be that you can nominate for newer remixes, as long as the original tune came out between 1973 and 1984?

Tuomas, Monday, 13 May 2013 08:54 (thirteen years ago)

Kinda sorta want the disco poll to open nominations now so everyone has a super duper long lead.

I've no problems starting the nomination thread early, I could probably do it this weekend (need to put that list of pre-nominated tunes together first), but I'm not sure if others are okay with this?

Tuomas, Monday, 13 May 2013 09:20 (thirteen years ago)

I'm OK, but what does everyone think about moving the genre polls to a different schedule? We could have a new artist poll every week, and aside from that genre polls which last a month or so.

ArchCarrier, Monday, 13 May 2013 09:31 (thirteen years ago)

I've no problem with that... With genre or label polls, the number of choices is so much bigger than with artists who released four or five albums, it seems logical the poll should run longer.

Tuomas, Monday, 13 May 2013 09:36 (thirteen years ago)

Also, the reason I think 1973 should be the earliest year for noms is because that's the year "TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia)" and "Love is the Message" came out, and those are often considered to be the first proper disco tunes. (I know "Love Train" from 1972 is sometimes considered to be disco too, but it feels more like proto-disco soul to me.)

Tuomas, Monday, 13 May 2013 09:45 (thirteen years ago)

I don't think you need to worry too much about defining the genre or era - for anything to place it'll need six or seven votes, and that's not likely to happen for anything that isn't widely understood as 'disco'.

I agree with excluding I Feel Love.

Ismael Klata, Monday, 13 May 2013 10:00 (thirteen years ago)

ahaha the idea of excluding I Feel Love reminds me of that one Monty Python sketch: "i'm after the expurgated version of "Olsen's Standard Book of British Birds". the one without the gannet."

but yeah, probably a good idea.

charlie h, Monday, 13 May 2013 10:15 (thirteen years ago)

I think it's rather ridiculous to exlude a song in a BEST OF DISCO poll, merely because it will do so well that it will probably win...

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 13 May 2013 10:27 (thirteen years ago)

^ exactly

ArchCarrier, Monday, 13 May 2013 10:32 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, I say include it and get excited about what's going to come second instead.

Hearing moyes confirmedare we hearing m (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Monday, 13 May 2013 10:34 (thirteen years ago)

LBI beat me to it--wanted to advocate for inclusion of "I Feel Love" (which would be high on my own list, though not #1).

There've been lots of polls, music and film, where the #1 looked to be obvious. And most times, that's how it turned out--though not always. I would have bet real money that "Cortez the Killer" would take the Neil Young poll, but it finished second. "I Feel Love" would indeed probably win, but I wouldn't be shocked if "Good Times" or "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)" or "Don't Stop 'til You Get Enough" or something else won instead. If it does win, great--as suggested above, the interesting thing then becomes what finishes second. But its absence would be jarringly conspicuous, and what significance would finishing first have anyway in a poll without "I Feel Love"?

clemenza, Monday, 13 May 2013 11:23 (thirteen years ago)

xp I don't like the idea of excluding I Feel Love either - sometimes ILM comes up with wild #1s but that only feels meaningful when the game isn't rigged. Just count down from #51 or #101 instead of #50 or #100.

scintilla (seandalai), Monday, 13 May 2013 11:25 (thirteen years ago)

You could give "I Feel Love" slot #0, thereby confusing everyone when it seems, for a few minutes, to have missed the top 100 altogether.

Not Simone Choule (Eric H.), Monday, 13 May 2013 11:53 (thirteen years ago)

"I Feel Love" won the general 70s poll, and IIRC it was in the top 5 in the top songs of the 20th century poll, so it seems obvious it will win this one too. The only way I can see it not winning if most of the votes come from obscurists, or those who love string disco and hate electronic disco, but this being ILX, I don't think it'll happen.

Tuomas, Monday, 13 May 2013 11:54 (thirteen years ago)

Anyway, another issue I was thinking of: should remixes count as separate tunes? In the 90s electronic music poll I did count them separately, but since most of the famous disco remixes are, essentially, extended edits, I'm not sure if they should be considered different tunes. OTOH, there are some well-known remixes, like the Patrick Cowley mix of "I Feel Love", or the Larry Levan mix of "Stand on the Word", which change the tune in significant ways.

Tuomas, Monday, 13 May 2013 11:59 (thirteen years ago)

Maybe limit the main poll to the original tunes, and have a side poll for remixes?

ArchCarrier, Monday, 13 May 2013 12:04 (thirteen years ago)

I agree that IFL should be included. Part of the stathead fun is in seeing the points jumps and the margins of victory, etc. One of the big surprises in Zep was that the #1 got almost 50% more points than the #2.

Thanks in advance for running this one, Tuomas.

xp good idea on remixes

WmC, Monday, 13 May 2013 12:05 (thirteen years ago)

In the case of Stand on the Word, the remix is the only one anyone knows iirc? Would be a pity to relegate it to a side poll. Cowley IFL feels like a unique case, I'd happily vote for it over OG IFL in the main poll.

scintilla (seandalai), Monday, 13 May 2013 12:34 (thirteen years ago)
