antivotes (or even just a separate "most hated" list) could work for trax, but with albums it would just be a lot of people voting for things they haven't heard just based on what they know of the artist, and you'd never be able to make them prove otherwise.

MGMT shows up in spot 20: "dear god how can we destroy the hegemony of this list before it is too late"
So so so so true.
― ilxor, Friday, 13 February 2009 17:29 (seventeen years ago)
The whole idea of antivotes would just lead to someone lame and inoffensive winning by default.
If you look at the MGMT album thread there aren't really that many boosters compared to Vampire Weekend or even someone like Lindstrom. Not a huge surprise.
Also I am guessing no TVOTR in the poll at all.
― Maximo Park Ji-Sung (Matt DC), Friday, 13 February 2009 17:30 (seventeen years ago)
'Twas merely a passing whimsy, based on the democratic ideal of being able to snipe at the same big obvious targets that received enough coverage and exposure to get INTO so many peoples' ears and lists. In practice it probably wouldn't work out so well. But, harsh as it may sound, I think negative sentiments on music should be heeded as much as positive ones. This does not mean that I am looking to hate music before I hear it, it just means that I've been let down too often. Like I say, though, a bit of whimsy to create debate, and I don't expect it to be seriously adopted.

aubrey is wearing a bandanna, but i think the dog is wearing a...bejewelled mini-bonnet of sorts?
― lex pretend, Friday, 13 February 2009 17:31 (seventeen years ago)
who needs a Most Hated thread for people to hate on things? isn't that what this and the singles threads are already?
― HPSCHD, Friday, 13 February 2009 17:32 (seventeen years ago)
Really, the problem here isn't the concept of the antivote (which is, you have to admit, completely stupid; why bother voting, then?), it's the sneering "anyone who likes halfway-mainstream music is a mindless sheep whose voice doesn't deserve to be heard" attitude that drives its suggestion that revolts me.
btw I think most people should be drowned at birth

not hating, but streaming this MGMT album and outside the singles it's pretty bad.
― call all destroyer, Friday, 13 February 2009 17:34 (seventeen years ago)
i don't agree -- if anything it would greatly help Erykah Badu's chances of winning over, say, anything really corny indie or super popular, which would be awesome. but it's still a stupid way to skew the results.
― some dude, Friday, 13 February 2009 17:35 (seventeen years ago)
some talk about how much droney/ambient music there actually is on this list. seems to me that the list leans pretty heavily in that direction:
50) Boris - Smile (drone/ambient moments, but that's mostly gone from their sound at this point)48) School Of Seven Bells - Alpinisms (some drone/ambient influences, in an indie-pop context)43) Alex Moulton - Exodus (would seem ambient-ish to folks who don't listen to a lot of dance music)40) Paavoharju - Laulu Laakson Kukista (substantial drone & ambient elements)38) D. Lissvik - 7 Trx + Intermission (faint ambient haze about the whole thing)37) Gas - Nah und Fern (AMBIENT DRONEZ)33) Earth - The Bees Made Honey In The Lion's Skull (ambient drones (lowercase), with lots of filigree)30) Quiet Village - Silent Movie (ambient in the sense that film soundtracks often are)29) Lau Nau - Nukkuu (substantial drone & ambient elements)28) Fennesz - Black Sea (AMBIENT DRONEZ)24) Grouper - Dragging A Dead Deer Up A Hill (substantial drone & ambient elements)21) Deerhunter - Microcastle (some drone/ambient influences, in an indie-pop context)
for comparison's sake, there's a bit less electrodribble:
48) School Of Seven Bells - Alpinisms (indie dream-pop, with lots electronic elements)47) Sébastien Tellier - Sexuality (electronic pop with indie appeal & tendencies)45) Girl Talk - Feed The Animals (ELECTRODRIBBLE)36) Glass Candy - B/E/A/T/B/O/X (ELECTRODRIBBLE)34) Max Tundra - Parallax Error Beheads You (ELECTRODRIBBLE)31) El Guincho - Alegranza (ELECTRODRIBBLE)30) Quiet Village - Silent Movie (electrodribble (lowercase))23) Elbow - The Seldom Seen Kid (mainstream indie-pop with lots of electronic elements)22) Crystal Castles - Crystal Castles (ELECTRODRIBBLE)20) MGMT - Oracular Spectacular (ELECTRODRIBBLE)
indie, old styles & new, both US and & UK varieties, still seems to d-d-d-dominate:
49) Arthur Russell - Love Is Overtaking Me (proto-indie (unfair, but there you go))48) School Of Seven Bells - Alpinisms (indie dream-pop)46) Fall, The - Imperial Wax Solvent (it's the fall: indie as much as it is anything else)45) Girl Talk - Feed The Animals (electrodribble)44) Jay Reatard - Matador Singles 08 (INDIE ROCK)42) Stephen Malkmus and Jicks - Real Emotional Trash (INDIE ROCK)40) Paavoharju - Laulu Laakson Kukista (folky droney indie crossover)39) Hold Steady, The - Stay Positive (INDIE ROCK)36) Glass Candy - B/E/A/T/B/O/X (electrodribble)35) Half Man Half Biscuit - CSI: Ambleside (INDIE)34) Max Tundra - Parallax Error Beheads You (electrodribble)31) El Guincho - Alegranza (electrodribble)30) Quiet Village - Silent Movie (electrodribble)29) Lau Nau - Nukkuu (folky droney indie crossover)25) Los Campesinos! - Hold On Now, Youngster (indie, writ large)24) Grouper - Dragging A Dead Deer Up A Hill (folky droney indie crossover)23) Elbow - The Seldom Seen Kid (m.o.rindie)22) Crystal Castles - Crystal Castles (electrodribble)21) Deerhunter - Microcastle (INDIE)20) MGMT - Oracular Spectacular (electrodribble)

You're all fine with this until all the lurkers "antivote" a beloved ILM golden cow (Badu) out of the Top 10.

I'm still amazed to see Crystal Castles on here; I thought everyone hated them now!
― Lots of praying with no breakfast! (HI DERE), Friday, 13 February 2009 17:37 (seventeen years ago)
love the MGMT, record, though yeah - mostly for the (spectacular) singles. plus crystal castles too
― contenderizer, Friday, 13 February 2009 17:37 (seventeen years ago)
I got no problem with halfway-mainstream or even mainstream music per se! Just with stuff that's hyped to the stars at the expense of better stuff when I think it has no right to be. I said I wouldn't pursue this line of hatred this year, and now I have, and I feel bad. I'll stop. Viva whatever music you like. MGMT bring me out in hives, though.
― Robin van Injury (country matters), Friday, 13 February 2009 17:38 (seventeen years ago)
contenderizer, thank you for breaking down the list categorically, it was all greek to me.
call all destroyer -- it would be awesome because New Amerykah is awesome, duh.
― some dude, Friday, 13 February 2009 17:38 (seventeen years ago)
mgmt wasn't an earth-shattering album, the singles were good, it was generally popular, it only polled at 20, it's friday evening, the weekend's coming, let's relax.
having said that i'd be mad if ne-yo were at 20 ;-)
― whatever, Friday, 13 February 2009 17:39 (seventeen years ago)
but this is not to find out which album was most awesome

― contenderizer, Friday, 13 February 2009 17:40 (seventeen years ago)
so the only three albums so far which don't fit into contenderizer's A+ taxonomy are solange, ne-yo and torche.
― lex pretend, Friday, 13 February 2009 17:42 (seventeen years ago)
Hype happens. Sometimes it works it works for you (The Rapture), sometimes it doesn't (The Strokes). Having a stroke over it won't actually change anything.
(examples relate to me)

in terms of actual real-world commercial success, which are the most successful? don't have sales info to hand though am guessing ne-yo, mgmt, elbow (in that order). and then maybe...uh...solange? even though her album was a total lol flop.
― lex pretend, Friday, 13 February 2009 17:44 (seventeen years ago)
Contenderizer > I don't think there's any drone to come and definitely no metal. Probably some electro-dribble though will still make it. Where's the hip-hop? I think maybe that poll a hoy hoy was going to do should be revived. Even if it's just for the benefit of those who don't know much about it but want to learn. The metal poll was great for that as people checked out what they weren't aware of.
― The User Formerly Known As Pfunkboy Latterly Known as.. (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 13 February 2009 17:45 (seventeen years ago)
i think like a lot of things, people who like them didn't have much to say past a point, beyond "i like this pretty well." but their usefulness as targets of ire and contempt has yet to expire. (especially in their case because every few months there's some new dickish thing they did that sets it all off again.)
― paper plans (tipsy mothra), Friday, 13 February 2009 17:45 (seventeen years ago)
Grouper - Dragging A Dead Deer Up A Hill (substantial drone & ambient elements)
word is there's a doomcore movement brewing in the substantial drone and ambient elements scene. should be big in next year's polls

really surprised at the absence of hip-hop from the list so far. did i miss some massive shift in ILM demographics? ringtone cru don't vote? no thug shit, no pop shit, no backpacker undie shit, no nothing. i mean, there aren't even any albums that borrow from hip-hop (other than freaking girl talk), which is o_O x O_o.
