Enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 09:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Shields lives in Long Island now? Where?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

the duties + demands placed on a dyslexia spokesman are immense¡
do you people really think he has time for anything else¿
surely he has found his true calling.

dyson (dyson), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Friday, 29 April 2005 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

WHOA.

"The Coral Sea 0 Text: Patti Smith Music: Patti Smith, Kevin Shields, Cat Power (Queen Elizabeth Hall, 22 June)"

I am so FUCKING there.

box.of.rox, Friday, 29 April 2005 23:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Now furiously googling for cheap flights to London.

box.of.rox, Friday, 29 April 2005 23:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sure whatever it is, it'll be good. :-) Pity I'll miss it by two weeks!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 29 April 2005 23:14 (twenty-one years ago)

what is this exactly?

Aerodynamic (Aerodynamic), Friday, 29 April 2005 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

It's this thing.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 29 April 2005 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

you would sit through the whole of horses to see kevin shields eat some pie? that's dedication.

keith m (keithmcl), Friday, 29 April 2005 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll have to ask him about this if I can get him on the phone soon -- supposed to talk for the "Loveless" book I hope to finish in two weeks.

Ohh shit should I start a thread here trawling for questions here for Mr. Shields, or is that redundant?

I tried trawling through here for ideas for the book a year ago and it all just seemed so redundant to type "Loveless" in the search engine, since almost every single thread came up! Hah.

What I REALLY need is help tracking down any of the people who worked on the album (esp. any of the 57 engineers) now that I got my "high quality" (hah) VOIP on and can make free phone calls to the UK...

Michael J McGonigal (mike mcgonigal), Friday, 29 April 2005 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost
What on earth do you mean, "sit through"? I fucking LOVE Horses. All the more reason.

box.of.rox, Friday, 29 April 2005 23:30 (twenty-one years ago)

"Ohh shit should I start a thread here trawling for questions here for Mr. Shields, or is that redundant?" - The most obvious questions seem so sadly unanswerable..

I'm greatly interested in your book, Michael. Do you have a title for it?

Steve Gertz (sgertz), Friday, 29 April 2005 23:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Ohh sorry to assume everyone knows I'm doing this, hah -- first Mr. Keenan was supposed to do it then he had to bail, and I've taken a few months more than I was supposed to to write the thing -- but somehow that's all fitting given the topic, right? That's what I tell myself anyway!

Michael J McGonigal (mike mcgonigal), Friday, 29 April 2005 23:41 (twenty-one years ago)

you've spoken to mcgee already?

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Friday, 29 April 2005 23:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Nope, put mutltiple requests in but never heard back! I dunno if he doesn't want to talk or maybe my contact info is bogus? I'll keep trying.

Michael J McGonigal (mike mcgonigal), Friday, 29 April 2005 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

You asked for it. You've dreamed of it. Now finally, together, for one night only: Steve Earle and Patti Smith (Royal Festival Hall, 19)!!!!

john'n'chicago, Friday, 29 April 2005 23:49 (twenty-one years ago)

"horses" is a peice of shit

Aerodynamic (Aerodynamic), Friday, 29 April 2005 23:53 (twenty-one years ago)

You mean "piece"? In any case, I do not agree, obviously.

Glad to hear that the 33-1/3 book on Loveless is well under way -- been waiting for that one. Sorry, can't think of any good questions off the top of my head, only idiotic/boring ones.

box.of.rox, Friday, 29 April 2005 23:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Question one: To Here Knows When...HOW?

Question two: Really?

The Father of Honky-Crunk (Matt Chesnut), Saturday, 30 April 2005 00:01 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah...piece

Aerodynamic (Aerodynamic), Saturday, 30 April 2005 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait, here's a geek question. I swear I read somewhere that dude had an instrument specially built just to record "Sometimes." True? And if so, how was it customised? Like he'd even remember at this point. Still I'm curious.

Also, have you talked or will you be talking to Bilinda, Colm, and/or Debbie? I'd be interested to hear what they have to say about the album at this point.

box.of.rox, Saturday, 30 April 2005 00:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Kevin Shields and Cat Power are totally gonna get married and sit in an apartment for the rest of their lives getting stoned and watching kung-fu movies in Spanish and eating lentils and duct taping over the windows and bitching about how nobody understands how hard it is for them to make music. It's gonna be like Les Enfants. Starring Alan McGee as Paul.

nabiscothingy, Saturday, 30 April 2005 02:39 (twenty-one years ago)

wow, you are so beyond music julio.

corey c (shock of daylight), Saturday, 30 April 2005 02:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Yay for Mike! I'm glad *someone's* doing it -- I was asked once or twice by others if I ever wanted to try for it but I gotta be honest, I find it near impossible to talk about the album or its personal impact on me, it was simply that profound. I've learned to accept that the most entrancing, powerful and moving album and music of my life will ultimately be indescribable by myself -- but that's why I like reading other interpretations of it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 30 April 2005 04:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Really -- let's talk about this for a second. Is Loveless unbelievabl.y overrated? Think about it -- it's possible. I love it, too. It makes me feel completely overwhelmed, like I'm stranded in a studio with nowhere to go, where high frequencies are the norm and nothing sounds clear. It's all sound -- all dreamy, all fresh.

Except for those drums, which haunt me in their determinate sincerity. What the hell is it about them that just...stays there? Do they anchor the music or do they ground it? Because there's something about the rest of it all that feels so fucking free. But those drums -- they bring it all back down to earth, as if sound were not indeterminate at all. As if it were very much finite.

The thing about Loveless is that is should be anything I want it to be. But it isn't.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Saturday, 30 April 2005 04:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Why should it be anything you want it to be?

sleep (sleep), Saturday, 30 April 2005 04:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess you explained what you mean by that in the post (that it should be more formless and thus more malleable in the mind of the listener, i think?), but I guess I'm asking why any album should be expected to be everything/anything to everyone/anyone? Of course that's impossible.

sleep (sleep), Saturday, 30 April 2005 04:42 (twenty-one years ago)

The big question is between Cat Power and Kevin Shields will either of them manage to play a full set of songs?

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Saturday, 30 April 2005 08:38 (twenty-one years ago)

What, does Shields have trouble playing live? I thought the problem was getting his own stuff recorded to his satisfaction. Anyway it sounds like the show is going to consist of Smith's "The Coral Sea" (her elegy for Robert Mapplethorpe, published in 1996) with music by herself, Shields, and Power, so "full set of songs" is probably moot.

Uh, I'm probably not fucking there. As the effect of that potent little cup of Chantico™ wanes, it becomes clear that spending a thousand bucks or so basically just to go to one show is too insane at this point even for me, even to see two of my personal top five living artists (one of whom is in some sort of weird career limbo and whom I'll likely never get to see perform) on a stage together, probably for the only time ever. SOB. Somebody had better bootleg this, is all. Horses haters note: no one will have to "sit through" anything; see the schedule.

(However! When I got up yesterday I had perfect indie-rock bedhead, requiring no human intervention whatsoever, for the first and undoubtedly last time in my life. I'll take my karmic consolation prizes where I can find them.)

box.of.rox, Saturday, 30 April 2005 09:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I am trying to get through on behalf of my friends. The rfh server seems to have melted down. Anyone got any 'no s' tricks?

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 5 May 2005 07:22 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't understand what you just said

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Thursday, 5 May 2005 07:30 (twenty-one years ago)

The Meltdown tickets went on sale 45 mins ago. The Royal Festival Hall website seems to have died, or is at least very overloaded. I can't connect to it anyway. I was wondering if anyone knew any secret way in. The 'no s' thing is a Glastonbury 2004 joke, sorry.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 5 May 2005 07:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Shields has no problems performing live, he's been in The Primal Scream Retirement Home For Non-Burnt-Out Former Indie Band Members for five years now

kit brash (kit brash), Thursday, 5 May 2005 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I was talking about a full set of his own songs. i know he has no problem performing.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Thursday, 5 May 2005 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

he's only got to play one Patti Smith song here, so he should be able to pull it off

could be funny if Chan Marshall flakes onstage though, and Smith has to reprimand and corral her mid-set

kit brash (kit brash), Thursday, 5 May 2005 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

two years pass...

so at the risk of being a credulous fool...

a boozy friend accosted shields over the weekend and he claimed the new mbv record was totally finished and he would be getting the gang together to tour it imminently. This pretty much tallies with the account of a mutual acquaintance who worked with the man 6 months or so ago. so maybe either ksheilds is a delusional tease or we might be getting some shinynewmbv. Has anyone heard anything that might corroborate this either way?

cw, Monday, 16 July 2007 10:30 (eighteen years ago)

I reckons he says that to everyone who asks, every time, for the past five years...

Mark G, Monday, 16 July 2007 10:32 (eighteen years ago)

He's been too busy hanging out at Sonic Cathedrals, celebrating himself, to record an album!

Masonic Boom, Monday, 16 July 2007 10:33 (eighteen years ago)

http://www.abovethelaw.com/images/entries/drudge%20siren.gifksheilds is a delusional teasehttp://www.abovethelaw.com/images/entries/drudge%20siren.gif

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Monday, 16 July 2007 10:35 (eighteen years ago)

precisely! he's been out and about a lot lately so maybe he has something to celebrate. he claimed that all the mbvers had been contacted and were pretty much ready to start rehearsing.

cw, Monday, 16 July 2007 10:36 (eighteen years ago)

And once they've had nine years' of rehearsals, they should be ready to hit the road.

Matthew H, Monday, 16 July 2007 11:57 (eighteen years ago)

i'm only interested if dave conway is involved

electricsound, Monday, 16 July 2007 11:58 (eighteen years ago)

No, see, he's totally telling the truth, it's just that Kevin Shields perceives time on a geological- nay, an astronomical scale.

Telephone thing, Monday, 16 July 2007 13:06 (eighteen years ago)

They're all still on Spotify for me (in NZ)

nate woolls, Sunday, 12 April 2026 22:19 (one month ago)

On Tidal in the UK at least.

Dan Worsley, Sunday, 12 April 2026 22:33 (one month ago)

I guess it's merely a (territorial) rights issue than a sign of something happening with the back catalog.

birdistheword, Sunday, 12 April 2026 23:55 (one month ago)

Makes me ponder exactly how long Loveless (Shields Version) would take to record.

Chewshabadoo, Monday, 13 April 2026 16:19 (one month ago)

There's probably one pedal that does it all now, lol. A friend of mine plays guitar in various cover bands, and on St. Patrick's Day they had a U2 gig. He was going to figure out the confluence of effects to get the guitar sound of "Mysterious Ways," but then he found a pedal with a pre-set called something like "Mysterious" that was more or less exactly that song's settings.

Except that you need 50 of them.

one month passes...

Deb's gear setup:

https://whatsonyourboard.substack.com/p/whats-on-your-board-with-deb-googe

Intently watching her play "Off Your Face" a couple months ago from several meters away makes me hard to believe that's not her favorite song to play.
