The Kiddycar one is a noteworthy album cover of 2009.

Eyeball Kicks, Tuesday, 30 April 2013 14:50 (eleven years ago) link

the Kiddycar cover is a crop of a Gottfried Helnwein painting.

From 2005. The plot thickens.

tbh it kind of looks like an ad, but I'm so excited to hear this album that I'm giving it some leeway.

I have the exact same carpet as the DJ CLAP cover.

Moka, Tuesday, 7 May 2013 05:01 (eleven years ago) link

I said it before but this has been honestly one of the laziest years I've seen in album artwork.

Artists like the Strokes, Phoenix, The Knife, Bowie, My Bloody Valentine, Justin Timberlake... they've been working what? like 5+ years on their albums and they had less than a day to create an actual cover? If they don't care enough I don't see why should I.

Moka, Tuesday, 7 May 2013 05:17 (eleven years ago) link

I guess in the case of The Knife I'll let it pass because the singles and videos have been at least cohesive in their aesthetic laziness.

Moka, Tuesday, 7 May 2013 05:20 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah seeing MBV vinyl in a store for $45, I took a real close look at the cover art to see if I was missing something in only seeing it as a JPG on my computer screen and no I wasn't. It really does look like the background on a poor 2003 MBV Myspace fansite. It was like the album was daring me to buy it and it lost, horribly. And of course the new Bowie LP sitting next to it turned the whole situation into a farce. Truly our greatest artists are pushing the envelope of not giving a shit, at least that's how it appears.

Strokes one sort of makes me think of whenever you see a website that is a bunch of movies done in the style of Penguin Book covers or something. Cool, you can make something that looks like it's old. Good job, dude.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 7 May 2013 05:43 (eleven years ago) link

The MBV is particularly offensive considering the 22 year span between this one and Loveless.

Moka, Tuesday, 7 May 2013 05:50 (eleven years ago) link

That said, here's some artwork from this year which I wouldn't displaying in my collection. From the looks of it, I really naked ladies and horses.

Is your real first name "tumblr"?

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 7 May 2013 06:21 (eleven years ago) link

And the artists in case you're curious: Daniel Romano, Keaton Heason, La Femme, Falty DL, Apparat, Banque Allemande, Foals, Heaven Shall Burn.

I was happier when I didn't see it, either.

Listening to the La Femme one now on the basis of its cover. Sounding very nice this sunny morning.

Eyeball Kicks, Tuesday, 7 May 2013 10:28 (eleven years ago) link

I sort of want Daniel Romano's suit.

Kyle Hall - The Boat Party

Number None, Tuesday, 7 May 2013 20:22 (eleven years ago) link

i like that one, but i wonder if it will make people think of dzokhar tsarnaev.

Treeship, Tuesday, 7 May 2013 22:54 (eleven years ago) link

well now it is

anonanon, Tuesday, 7 May 2013 23:02 (eleven years ago) link

too schoon, guys.

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 7 May 2013 23:50 (eleven years ago) link

i like that one. reminds me of the palette tool on MS paint and other programs. that was always sort of magical to me as a kid, as there was an infinity of subtleties between two visibly identical shades. good evocation, Sunbathers.

Treeship, Wednesday, 8 May 2013 03:37 (eleven years ago) link

OTOH, not a welcome gradient on the skin of a sunbather.

Me So Hormetic (Sanpaku), Wednesday, 8 May 2013 03:52 (eleven years ago) link

yes, it looks like a massive sun-poisoning blister.

Treeship, Wednesday, 8 May 2013 03:56 (eleven years ago) link

love the kyle hall cover

the display names will fall like rain (Matt P), Wednesday, 8 May 2013 03:59 (eleven years ago) link

re Sunbather I like to think of it as the color of sunlight through closed eyelids

anonanon, Wednesday, 8 May 2013 04:06 (eleven years ago) link

That's nice, anonanon. Your association with eyelids staring at the sun has made me like this cover.

Moka, Wednesday, 8 May 2013 05:16 (eleven years ago) link

sweet. the dissolving text is a nice touch and apropos too. and all this for a black metal album

anonanon, Wednesday, 8 May 2013 05:44 (eleven years ago) link

ok, an apparently shoegazey post-rockin black metal album, but still

anonanon, Wednesday, 8 May 2013 05:48 (eleven years ago) link

been a while...

Wait what? That's a black metal album? That one is misleading for sure.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 8 May 2013 06:00 (eleven years ago) link

Moka yeah Deafheaven is nominally black metal but based on a preview track, I wager the cover is quite appropriate. in case it piques your interest

anonanon, Wednesday, 8 May 2013 06:07 (eleven years ago) link

what is so so glos?

Cover connections if you squint:

Still Corners - Strange Pleasures (RIYL Young Galaxy, Chromatics kinda thing)

Sungod - Contackt (RIYL space rock kinda thing)

scintilla (seandalai), Thursday, 9 May 2013 13:44 (eleven years ago) link

those two are great. especially the still corners one. don't think i'd name an album strange pleasures though, unless it is an explicit joy division nod

whiskey and ice cream sandwiches (Treeship), Friday, 10 May 2013 05:32 (eleven years ago) link

the small black is like extremely low rent storm thorgerson
