hah agreed but i think his point is that hacks trying to be challenging doesnt make for much of a challenge

some black dude (k3vin k.), Friday, 13 February 2009 05:33 (seventeen years ago)

but it's not supposed to challenge, it's supposed to rock, and it does so.

call all destroyer, Friday, 13 February 2009 05:35 (seventeen years ago)

Before I go back to bed, tell me what electro-dribble will probably make it ;)

The remaining electrodribble I'd say is Cut Copy, Hot Chip and MGMT. I would expect at least Cut Copy in the top 5-15 or so.

ilxor, Friday, 13 February 2009 05:37 (seventeen years ago)

I feel like MGMT and Hot Chip could've gotten votes on the tracks poll, more so than here.

ilxor, Friday, 13 February 2009 05:38 (seventeen years ago)

vocals = challenging, if yr not into that approach. i don't think they're trying to be challenging on any level, though. just sound like a rock band, and a good one

be real surprised if MGMT doesn't make it

contenderizer, Friday, 13 February 2009 05:41 (seventeen years ago)

"challenging" in the sense that it tries to do away with convention and integrate punk with some more unassuming stylings so as to mess with common perceptions of what constitutes punk and in what directions it can be pushed. that's a noble pursuit, i just don't think it works so well with this album. doesn't sound so vital to my ears. opinion only.

the vocals is another point too, but one that didn't occur to me till it was mentioned :)

By the way, what the fuck is this!?!!?

contenderizer, Friday, 13 February 2009 05:53 (seventeen years ago)

I like this list a lot so far... but then again, after seven of my choices appearing on it, why wouldn't I? ;)

Lostandfound, Friday, 13 February 2009 06:27 (seventeen years ago)

I was going to vote for Grouper then forgot, though (I have the horrible feeling I voted for Elbow in its place, sorry fellow Grouper-lovers). With emil.y's and my vote it would have featured even higher!

happy house of representatives (J0rdan S.), Friday, 13 February 2009 08:02 (seventeen years ago)

I'm particularly suprised at the low amount of house/techno after how strongy those genres performed in the singles poll.

House and techno are singles genres, so it's not really that weird that the do better in the singles poll.

Crystal Castles are one of the bands that inspired me to start the "Indie electro: worst genre ever" thread. They're one of the worst things I've heard in years, it's like they do electronic music where everything that is good about electronic music has been taken away, and replaced it with everything that is bad about rock music: distortion, angst, abrasive and intentionally ugly sounds, shouty and skilless singing, etc.

Tuomas, Friday, 13 February 2009 08:04 (seventeen years ago)

i've got no particular love for CC but not all their stuff is like that tbf....Air War is quite pretty

unaustralian (jabba hands), Friday, 13 February 2009 08:14 (seventeen years ago)

The worst band by far to come out of the 8-bit scene: You Love Her Coz She's Dead.

If you think CC will wear down your last nerve, you have no idea.

Eh I didn't vote in this poll in the end - I've done like four top 20s or 15s for people already plus the metal poll plus some other EOY stuff and I was (a) a bit sick of it (b) all too aware that my honest-to-goodness favourite 08 stuff has so little crossover with 90% of what was ending up on polls everywhere. Not a 'o hi i r individual' thing - I liked a lot of albums listed already plus likely still-to-comes, just not enough for a sufficiently high placing. Er, FWIW.

This is a nice read though with a few surprises that I wasn't aware ILM gave a lot of love to, so that's cool

FYI this band are nowhere near as rad as Tuomas' description is implying here :/

am I selling cardamom or am I selling thyme (DJ Mencap), Friday, 13 February 2009 08:25 (seventeen years ago)

part of me is annoyed with Crystal Castles, because yeah, they are willfully abrasive and make me a little nauseated at times, and some of the lyrics that i can hear sound stupid. but to me they also sound genuinely sad and desperate and young in a way that not much other indie music does right now. in their best songs they have a way with chopped up jerky vocal/synth melodies that is surprisingly affecting and addictive. and i can't stand any other electrodribble.

vergangenheitsbewaeltigung (later arpeggiator), Friday, 13 February 2009 08:27 (seventeen years ago)

I'm a bit embarrassed about that Crystal Castles quote because I have probably hated on them far more than I've repped for them. I find their sad/mopey/pretty tracks genuinely affecting but hate their boshing screamy stuff and its the latter that seems to get them most attention.

Really surprised that Ne-Yo placed so low here - I thought people *loved* that album. Nice guys finish last, I suppose.

Re: all the 'this doesn't feel like an ILM list' comments, well the consensus stuff will be at the top but there's a pretty unshakeable argument that the domination of polls and genre-based rolling threads has led to a lot of albums slipping by largely unnoticed, even when people really liked them.

Maximo Park Ji-Sung (Matt DC), Friday, 13 February 2009 08:59 (seventeen years ago)

everything that is bad about rock music: distortion, abrasive and intentionally ugly sounds, shouty singing, etc

you're no son of mine.

m the g, Friday, 13 February 2009 09:17 (seventeen years ago)

Out of what I voted for that has made the list (Luomo, Crystal Castles, Lau Nau, Grouper), I don't think the Lau Nau or Grouper records got talked about much at all, even in any of the rolling threads. They're both pretty quiet and introspective records, maybe it's just not music for blabbermouths? Only picked up on the Grouper cos a couple of folk who seemed to have interesting tastes dropped their name in that 'best of year so far' thread, so thanks to those guys.

Hope that clips right btw, I can't get into youtube at work (I just get a blank space on the page).

Bernard's Butler (Raw Patrick), Friday, 13 February 2009 10:13 (seventeen years ago)

i listened to that lau nau months ago, and forgot all about it. maybe i'll try it again

xpost i cant click on it here at the library but it's showing up

some black dude (k3vin k.), Friday, 13 February 2009 10:14 (seventeen years ago)

wow does the clip have to end with that racist tangent?

all-seeing eye of horus (psychgawsple), Friday, 13 February 2009 10:17 (seventeen years ago)

Lau Nau is proper cabin-in-the-forest creakiness, not like that self-aggrandizing Bon Iver weaksauce. That guy should be eaten by bears.

Frank Sumatra (NickB), Friday, 13 February 2009 10:29 (seventeen years ago)

xxxxxpost, I'm pretty sure those are the best things about rock music but whatevs

maybe bon iver is the album that musically was referring to that didn't make the top 50! [/the audacity of hope]

lex pretend, Friday, 13 February 2009 10:33 (seventeen years ago)

re: the timbaland video

a) it makes me respect his talent a bit more, to see how he actually managed to polish those turds into something jamming - obv there's one basic ripped-off element but the fact is that 'do it' and 'ayo technology' are terrific trax that i would jam to right now, and the sources are sort of inept and boring
b) wtf at the racism, seriously?

lex pretend, Friday, 13 February 2009 10:35 (seventeen years ago)

I had no idea that the poll results were out. I'd just glossed over all those /\/\/\/\'s!

Anyway ...

aren't these guys famous for ripping other people off wholesale or something?

not ?? you lex, the video

Plaxico (I know, right?), Friday, 13 February 2009 10:37 (seventeen years ago)

It's very varied so far, isn't it?

And Matt DC, yes you would be pleasantly surprised by the QV album.

hah idk did people really even vote for that album? besides it being bad it did come out in 07 and all. i'm hoping it's fleet foxes

some black dude (k3vin k.), Friday, 13 February 2009 10:51 (seventeen years ago)

I'm placing an outside bet on a Vampire Weekend no-show, based on the "Everybpdy else will vote for them, so why should I?" syndrome.

mike t-diva, Friday, 13 February 2009 11:12 (seventeen years ago)

Can't watch that clip as my computer has no sound, so not really sure what it's about, but in answer to the question, Crystal Castles are VERY well known for being rip-off merchants. Which I would have no problem with at all if it wasn't for them saying 'we make sounds that nobody else can' in interviews. That's a case for trade descriptions if ever I saw one.

Anyway, I'm off to class/celebrate my BIRTHDAY, woo. Hope the list doesn't get too boring from here on in, I've been liking the eclecticism so far (aside from the serious clunkers of the Hold Steady and Elbow).

emil.y, Friday, 13 February 2009 11:53 (seventeen years ago)

that youtube clip above is pretty moronic and depressing.

In the wake of this I'd like to point out I've never seen the YouTube clip. I just c&ped it from a goole search.

I should have linked a text page about it, to avoid poss. of me looking like a prick.

Tuomas makes Crystal Castles sound bloody amazing. But I fear i'd be just disappointed.

The User Formerly Known As Pfunkboy Latterly Known as.. (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 13 February 2009 15:04 (seventeen years ago)

I fear you would.

m the g, Friday, 13 February 2009 15:07 (seventeen years ago)

if Crystal Castles chart and Late Of The Pier don't, then I'm sorry but something is rotten in the state of ILM and y'all have cloth ears

Robin van Injury (country matters), Friday, 13 February 2009 15:08 (seventeen years ago)

FYI there are 3 or 4 Adult. albums that pretty much fit Tuomas' description of CCs there, with the added bonus of being good

am I selling cardamom or am I selling thyme (DJ Mencap), Friday, 13 February 2009 15:10 (seventeen years ago)

Late Of The Pier are obviously going to make this poll, stop whining.

Maximo Park Ji-Sung (Matt DC), Friday, 13 February 2009 15:10 (seventeen years ago)

eeh, CC have the higher profile anyway

i think the album is 2/3 great and 1/3 unlistenable shite

O Supermanchiros (blueski), Friday, 13 February 2009 15:11 (seventeen years ago)

I always got the feeling the ILM LOTP following was stronger though. The crazy all-over-the-place nature of this list so far means the top 20 is going to be super-predictable.

Maximo Park Ji-Sung (Matt DC), Friday, 13 February 2009 15:20 (seventeen years ago)

I only listened to that Late of the Pier album once, but I thought it was HORRIBLE, even though I like that sort of thing.
