whats he up to, feel like his talents are kinda wasted on music, he could be talking abt more substantial things

I have beef w/you for this attitude, you're nothing but an old lagoon that's what you are

Drawing flowers in the margins of Morrisey

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 29 April 2013 04:58 (thirteen years ago)

I tweeted a link to the article about your canceled tour, and then asked this simple question of my followers (I have about 850,000 of them): “How many people out there would pay $5 to crowdfund/pre-order a digital-only Morrissey album?”

There were many, many answers. You were discussed, anecdotes were shared... and I said very little.

amanda palmer's open letter to _______________________

diamonddave85, Monday, 29 April 2013 14:46 (thirteen years ago)

But you…you’re actually Morrissey. You have some of the most fanatical fans in the world; caring and devoted people from countries far and wide who would be really, really happy to support you at levels far beyond $5 just to have the songs in their ears.

You’re possibly one of the best candidates on the planet to use crowdfunding, because of who you are and what you mean.

straight up reveling in the fact that crowdsourcing is a good way to exploit fanaticism for profit

In the '70s, Robert Plant was a golden god...imagine if he'd had a tip jar!

da croupier, Monday, 29 April 2013 14:51 (thirteen years ago)

it just breaks her heart to see cult icons drudge their way through capitalism when they could just pass the collection plate

da croupier, Monday, 29 April 2013 14:54 (thirteen years ago)

I would donate to The Cure's Kickstarter project in a heartbeat

hell, I would look for a level that allowed me to sit in on a studio session and figure out how to shuffle finances so my wife didn't notice I'd spent tens of thousands of dollars on the band in one fell swoop (at this point I've at least spent thousands of dollars on them)

He sort of did, but it was not a "jar," if you get my drift.

also wasn't just the tip

it's really appropriate that neil gaiman's wife would be looking out for minor deities

both dream of a magical sphere of people who walk among the rest of us

da croupier, Monday, 29 April 2013 15:05 (thirteen years ago)

The thing is, she's probably correct that it would be lucrative for Morrissey. However, it doesn't follow that she would need to assist in any way to make it happen. I read her letter as saying basically, "Hey I have this great idea for you Morrissey, and you can use it so long as I get a slice of the action." It's ridiculously presumptuous of her to think that Morrissey would let her step in and start managing how he funds and sells his products.

Moodles, Monday, 29 April 2013 15:06 (thirteen years ago)

of course it would be lucrative - how can taking advantage of people's obsession with you NOT be lucrative? she just realizes that other cult leaders might need some help learning how to ACT like cult leaders

WilliamC, Monday, 29 April 2013 15:11 (thirteen years ago)

to be clear, I think everyone should feel free to pre-sell their work at ridiculous prices on kickstarter, i just find palmer's evangelism and extensions of the concept amazing

da croupier, Monday, 29 April 2013 15:12 (thirteen years ago)

considering how EXCITED she is for popular artists to reap the whirlwind and drain the devoted for every dollar they'd give, i'm not shocked that she's had some experience with the cult that believes celebrities are the chosen few

da croupier, Monday, 29 April 2013 15:14 (thirteen years ago)

i just skimmed it but as far as i can tell the only place where she indicates she would be involved at all is where she says "But I’d be totally keen to help you crowdfund" at the end. she doesn't say anything at all akin to "Hey I have this great idea for you Morrissey, and you can use it so long as I get a slice of the action."

she sucks but i don't really see anything too offensive or awful in this letter.

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 29 April 2013 15:15 (thirteen years ago)

yeah n/a OTM; my only question was why she published an open letter rather than trying to contact Morrissey's management directly and then I remembered "oh right, attention; lol"

Call me at **BITCOIN (DJP), Monday, 29 April 2013 15:17 (thirteen years ago)

Like I said on FB, my real problem here would be if this resulted in a duet.

It's just like a sad stab for attention/love from Morrissey fans.

it's a truism from politics that 'open letters' are written by people who have zero leverage over the issue or people addressed

goole, Monday, 29 April 2013 15:22 (thirteen years ago)

i don't think the letter is offensive or awful per se, just a hilarious extension of her beliefs - "look, if you other drama club icons don't understand how to do turn the fanatic vacuum cleaner on I'LL DO IT FOR YOU"

da croupier, Monday, 29 April 2013 15:23 (thirteen years ago)

It's also relevant to point out that a man who can book out a few suites at Claridges to put up himself and friends whenever he's in London is maybe not someone who needs Kickstarter.

karl lagerlout (suzy), Monday, 29 April 2013 15:24 (thirteen years ago)

no one needs kickstarter. depending on how you look at it, it's either a place to pre-sell goods or a place to offer investment opportunities with extremely limited rewards. oh, and there's no promise you'll actually get what you pay for.
