It’s damnably difficult to carve a private audience out of the open web...
Is that a bad thing? The possibility of friction can help keep you honest.

but it’s also indistinguishable from the intrusive begging of any corporation
Not true, corporations tends to be more tasteful in their exploitative behaviors. For instance I haven't seen a corporation directly compare itself to suicide victims.

The big difference is that Hyundai actually issued an apology after being criticized.
If they did things AFP's way then the next ad would be all about how victimized they are by the criticism from the last ad, some self-serving "We started a conversation" stuff, a "Donate to Hyundai (Donate = <3)", and a link to a website where Hyundai owners can post their own stories, which will provide content for the next next ad.

I tweeted a link to the article about your canceled tour, and then asked this simple question of my followers (I have about 850,000 of them): “How many people out there would pay $5 to crowdfund/pre-order a digital-only Morrissey album?”
There were many, many answers. You were discussed, anecdotes were shared... and I said very little.

But you…you’re actually Morrissey. You have some of the most fanatical fans in the world; caring and devoted people from countries far and wide who would be really, really happy to support you at levels far beyond $5 just to have the songs in their ears.
You’re possibly one of the best candidates on the planet to use crowdfunding, because of who you are and what you mean.
straight up reveling in the fact that crowdsourcing is a good way to exploit fanaticism for profit
