looks like it's for the last ever ATP weekender (until the reformation amirite)

ATP are calling time on their weekender festivals at England's Camber Sands Holiday Park. The British promoters will stage two final residential events there under the banner "End of an Era" this winter: The first takes place November 22-24, where Television will play Marquee Moon in full, along with Chelsea Light Moving, Dinosaur Jr., Dinos Chapman, Les Savy Fav, múm, Oneohtrix Point Never, Hebronix, Mike Watt, Forest Swords, the Haxan Cloak, Demdike Stare, Wolf Eyes, BEAK>, and Eraas. The event is co-curated by the Primavera Sound festival.

The second weekend, November 29-December 1, will feature LOOP (who have reformed to headline and curate), the Pop Group, 23 Skidoo, Fennesz, Edan (DJ set), the KVB, Dirty Beaches, Eaux, Hookworms, and Thought Forms. More bands are still to be announced for both festivals.

tbrr Loop do not strike me as a band who are nearly big enough to get many people down to one of these things on name alone

congo nattefrost (DJ Mencap), Friday, 26 April 2013 10:29 (thirteen years ago)

No, it's an odd one and the other names announced for it aren't exactly helping.

Troughton-masked Replicant (aldo), Friday, 26 April 2013 10:35 (thirteen years ago)

Offical announcement from earlier today

"It was a long time ago... and it didn't really finish that well. I'm not sure anyone of us can really put our fingers on specific reasons, for they are legion, but after many many years of being asked why not play again, I can't seem to find any excuses for why not to anymore. To always pursue a forward motion has been my goal, but what goes around comes around as they say.

It seems that as much as you try to run as far as you can away from it, your past will always haunt you. I have never really slept well over the demise of Loop, it always felt unfinished. If I had a pound coin given to me for every time I get asked to reform Loop, I'd be a very rich man by now. I had always baulked at the idea, especially when I have been asked to perform songs with a pick-up band, something I could never do... ever.

It's not that I am precious, but at the same time, without John and Neil holding down that centre, I'd never be able to wave, it would never be the same.
I'm so proud to say that the line-up of John Wills, Neil Mackay, Scott Dowson and myself have agreed to perform a limited number of shows from late 2013 to mid 2014 at various venues across the world. To perform from all stages of the Loop arc, enjoy it again, hoping that we make plenty of people happy again and maybe give people a chance to see it for the first time... then, we can put it finally to rest with a better feeling of completion and that a chapter is really over. I sincerely hope it maybe refreshing to us and to others. For some, it may simply not be on their radar anymore. Well, it's simple enough for them, don't buy a ticket. It's going to blink and you miss it because it's not going to be around long, I refuse to prolong it and for it to become embarrassing. It'll be sharp and to the point...straight to your heart and then, it's gone.

ATP is the only place this could happen and be done well. Who else would offer the chance not only to play but also curate some of the bands alongside Loop on the day. It's quite special to be able to do this and make it happen. Besides, Barry Hogan has pestered me for so long about this, it would seem rather unfair not to let him have his 5 minutes of fame getting Loop to play again.

RH April 2013"

One of my all-time favourite live bands, & as unlikely a reformation as could be expected. Beyond excited about this.

Wandering Boy Poet, Friday, 26 April 2013 12:16 (thirteen years ago)

The Pop Group and Loop together at the same festival? So...thirty minute version of "Thief of Fire" that destroys the universe?

Ned Raggett, Friday, 26 April 2013 12:38 (thirteen years ago)

Still think North American shows are a long shot, but...

Nothing major per se but it's up and running.

I've gotten answers to my interview questions back from Hampson. The text runs slightly over 5000 words, before I write any kind of intro. This will all be in the next issue of Burning Ambulance, which will be available in, I think, less than two weeks.

And you should all get that Burning Ambulance issue if you haven't already, BTW.

I seriously thought this was a joke at first. It isn't. That IS Loop, from very early days, as discussed here.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 16 May 2013 14:19 (thirteen years ago)

I sat in front of James Endeacott (the ginger one in that photo) at a Millwall v Palace match a couple of weeks ago. Didn't he sign the Libertines? In a half hearted attempt to reignite rivalries, The aforementioned Millwall Palace match was about as exciting as a Spacemen 3 gig.

I'll be really excited if they come to the east coast US

Evan, Thursday, 11 July 2013 14:31 (twelve years ago)

Ditto! Roadburn always streams the live sets a few months after the fact though, so that's something to look forward to.

I think James Endeacott was manager for the Tindersticks for a while, think he was over with them when they played a Dublin gig in '98.
I knew him from gigs in London 10 years earlier, possibly a bit more than that.

Ever so mysterious.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 27 September 2013 14:30 (twelve years ago)

not sure why they don't just do it under their actual name but if it's in the carpark-lookin' space on the venue's website that would be pretty gnar. I'll just see em in Bristol a fortnight after tho I guess

First reunion show was tonight, apparently a blinder.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 19 November 2013 00:27 (twelve years ago)

I was there, & it was indeed. It got away from them briefly towards the very end, but they quickly pulled it round by the time they got to "Mother Sky" (there was a very brief bass amp issue that might have thrown them a little). 2 sets, I'm struggling to think of what they didn't play that I'd want to hear, but even if I could think of something it'd be nit-picking. A triumph.

Wandering Boy Poet, Tuesday, 19 November 2013 01:37 (twelve years ago)

Very, very jealous.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 19 November 2013 02:31 (twelve years ago)

Yeah that was awesome - although we left just after the bass amp thing so we missed Mother Sky and whatever else they played for the rest of the encore, unfortunately. But that was because of the venue, not the band (it was ridiculously hot in there and for some unknown reason there was a food stall in the hall cooking food all through the gig (possibly why it was so hot) so it was also pretty stinky and it was making my wife nauseous). Kinda glad I'm not going to any other ATP gigs there now after that tbh. That and the choices at the bar, wtf was that about.

Looks good, had somebody yesterday worrying about what they were going to play.
Are there 2 different setlists or is that both sets?

Rob has just commented on how hot it was in there on his Facebook feed

Stevolende, Tuesday, 19 November 2013 12:02 (twelve years ago)

Both sets. Didn't time it but they were scheduled to do some like 1 hour long set & another about 80mins, but think the last was shorter than that. Certainly they finished before 22:30 rather than the 23:00 stated on the poster near the entrance. Started a bit late & think the gap between was shorter than expected, & I was with a bunch of people, so I wasn't paying too close attention.

Wandering Boy Poet, Tuesday, 19 November 2013 13:02 (twelve years ago)

Yeah that's about right - they came on about 25 mins late but the gap between was much shorter than 30 mins

Never thought I'd see Paul Weller fronting Loop.

Meantime Robert's dropped a VERY heavy hint on FB that Austin Psych Fest is in the works for them next year. Makes total sense -- and also means not too far away from Coachella too. I'd say start heavily blocking time out in April and May next year.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 20 November 2013 04:41 (twelve years ago)

It took them a couple of songs to get into their stride on Monday. Also seemed to be a few sound issues. The second set was, thankfully, a lot louder than the first. When they took off though, they flew. The version of Mother Sky that closed the set was astounding. I am glad they've gone grey, rather than bald, or fat.

Flowersdie, Thursday, 21 November 2013 13:43 (twelve years ago)

It looks like Mark Stewart had a bit of a meltdown last night and started accusing Josh and the ATP people of being fake indie fascists or something along those lines. After the gig Josh got back to his hotel room to find that he's been sent several abusive Facebook messages by Stewart anyway.
Shame that, I have loved the Pop Group for years though I'm not 100% into what I've heard of the current group. But it looks like Stewart may have some mental health issues he needs to sort out at least on this basis. Josh has said that he will never listen to the Pop Group again and there will be no more versions of Thief Of Fire played by Loop. Think he overstepped the mark a bit by saying that nobody would have heard of Pop Group without a certain band covering them but maybe that is heat of the moment. I thought they were a legendary post-punk group that had a lot of recognition before taht anyway, I mean Minutemen echo bits of their songs on Double Nickels and cited them as an influence and I'm sure several others did too. I first heard of them through Birthday Party comparisons anyway.

So looks like there will be no Pop Group appearance this weekend. & I hope Mark Stewart is going to apologise and explain where this came from anyway.
I was looking forward to the apparently forthcoming Pop Group compilation set that I was told about earlier this year, won't be quite as much now. I guess the members of taht band today are 30+ years differentiated from the people who recorded the music so I can still isolate it enough to enjoy it?
