"daft punky" doesn't really work, good call robots

anonanon, Thursday, 25 April 2013 18:44 (thirteen years ago)

I regret not buying that because of Huggy Bear hatred.

What was Single of the Week, while you're at it?

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 25 April 2013 18:49 (thirteen years ago)

Actually that's probably an album review from the layout. I always liked that font, MM was great to read.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 25 April 2013 18:52 (thirteen years ago)

No it was a singles column entry, I remember that much.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 25 April 2013 19:00 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, I pulled the review from GIS so I don't remember what the single of the week was.

The last of the famous international Greyjoys (Nicole), Thursday, 25 April 2013 19:01 (thirteen years ago)

CrispyBen, nope no luck on those leads, thx though.

anonanon, what about Aufgang? Playing their new record right now and thinking of your query...

crispyben, Thursday, 25 April 2013 19:11 (thirteen years ago)

That's weird. I looked up that review at the library just the other day to check the exact quote. Reviewer was Dave Jennings and it was on the singles reviews page. Didn't notice what the SOTW was.

Deafening silence (DL), Thursday, 25 April 2013 19:14 (thirteen years ago)

ha, I actually came across Aufgang through "independent research" and mentioned them upthread but they are too slick/busy/produced for what I'm looking for. Now if you had something that sounded like rough Aufgang demos played on piano + drums...

anonanon, Thursday, 25 April 2013 19:28 (thirteen years ago)

was it: http://www.beatport.com/track/tantakatan-original-mix/527292 ??

the late great, Thursday, 25 April 2013 19:42 (thirteen years ago)

j/k but that's what i keep thinking of when you say piano and drums

the late great, Thursday, 25 April 2013 19:44 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, I keep harping on that as I seem to recall it was presented more like a band, a experimental duo or trio maybe who were exploring a house-y sound through reverb-y piano repetition and drums, as opposed to a house producer using live sounding instrumentation, which is mostly what I've been able to turn up.

anonanon, Thursday, 25 April 2013 19:55 (thirteen years ago)

Probably too full and jazzy for your description, but I really loved this a couple of years back and thought it worth sharing.

what about Tussle?

brimstead, Thursday, 25 April 2013 23:27 (thirteen years ago)

when did the weekly inky UK press stop bleeping out the swears? they print 'F***' as 'Fuck' in NME these days and i'm sure have done for years.

piscesx, Friday, 26 April 2013 01:44 (thirteen years ago)

It wasn't Hauschka was it?

they all are afflicted with a sickness of existence (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 26 April 2013 05:20 (thirteen years ago)

Oasis getting big really undermined that policy xp, when for years the content of every other page was "Fook! Fookin c***!"

I didn't know what c*** was when I first started buying it

Ismael Klata, Friday, 26 April 2013 06:17 (thirteen years ago)

I think Shaun Ryder was why NME invented "fook"

Question: is the song getting any mainstream airplay in the US? Any airplay at all?

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 26 April 2013 13:49 (thirteen years ago)

It was playing on the tinny radio behind the counter where I was getting my lunch (not in the US though). It sounded pretty terrible tbh, I can see why you'd ramp up the compression if that's the media you're targeting.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 26 April 2013 14:20 (thirteen years ago)

It's been getting some airplay on that Canadian station that accidentally leaked it.

MarkoP, Friday, 26 April 2013 14:25 (thirteen years ago)

report from a friend djing a wedding on Long Island last weekend:

"had 50 middle-aged people from Ohio dancing to Get Lucky, dropped it right after 'we are family' :)"

yes, i've been hearing it quite a bit on one of my city's top 40 stations basically ever since it premiered

dyl, Friday, 26 April 2013 19:20 (thirteen years ago)

was scanning through Boston's Kiss 108 playlist of 206 songs to see if it would show up; got to "Stuck On You" by Lionel Richie before lolling and bailing

Jam'n 94.5, the hip-hop station, has three Macklemore songs in its top 40 so I'm not going to keep looking as I don't want to start crying

Middle aged = your parents' age. This has always been true and still is.

Ismael Klata, Friday, 26 April 2013 20:23 (thirteen years ago)

I am reasonably certain that mid-70s is not "middle-aged"

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Friday, 26 April 2013 21:10 (thirteen years ago)

The US Census lists middle age as including both the age categories 35 to 44 and 45 to 54

Ned Raggett, Friday, 26 April 2013 21:31 (thirteen years ago)

mouthy, brimstead, chew: nope no luck there, not Hauschka or the others.

It was more like: take Hauschka being house-y, record it somewhat live sounding like Tussle, and cross it with like... Steve Reich piano piece style repetition? Doubts increase that this exists as a thing.

anonanon, Friday, 26 April 2013 21:35 (thirteen years ago)

I got home from an evening out before eight o'clock tonight, who am I kidding
