Amanda Palmer ‏@amandapalmer 42m
someone commented: "you don't know how to stop drawing flowers in the margins of a train wreck." and i thought...perfectly put. yes.

a "perfectly put" horrifying mixed metaphor, yes.

if she shows boob it = 38 hitpoints to a man's anger at her

I don't get it, are you drawing the flowers in the margins of, like, a picture of a train wreck? That you also drew? Or a photo of a train wreck in the newspaper? Or are you literally standing a few feet from an actual wrecked train, drawing flowers? If so -- drawing them on the wreckage itself, or do you have some kind of easel setup?

Guayaquil (eephus!), Thursday, 25 April 2013 18:54 (thirteen years ago)

see, we're already talking about it, so it must be good.

I completely agree with the sentiment of that video but my god was that annoying to sit through

"Aluminium" was the second worst part. The worst part was having the melody in my head all night

flamboyant goon tie included, Friday, 26 April 2013 14:13 (thirteen years ago)

are you literally standing a few feet from an actual wrecked train, drawing flowers?

This was my interpretation, doesn't sound like a particularly helpful response to a rail accident tbh.

Gavin, Leeds, Friday, 26 April 2013 14:17 (thirteen years ago)

art is always a valid response

people hate drama kids is def more compelling than insights into internet marketing

lag∞n, Saturday, 27 April 2013 13:28 (thirteen years ago)

most of it's a sympathetic sum-up but the bit i find odd is where artists shouldn't forget that haters are going to go their sites as well

da croupier, Saturday, 27 April 2013 13:53 (thirteen years ago)

This is a way of using technology to reach out to and engage interested fans, yes, but it’s also indistinguishable from the intrusive begging of any corporation — say, if I went to the Hardees website to marvel at the number of calories in their food and was greeted with requests to sign up for a customer loyalty program.

I mean, who's the intruder here?

da croupier, Saturday, 27 April 2013 13:55 (thirteen years ago)

I was innocently visiting Amanda Palmer's website when I was bombarded by Amanda Palmer related material

nah the latter is one reason i care -- as a model for the future of music its pretty horrifying and bleak.

vulture is ny mag btw? or did you mean ny mag "proper"?

one thing i like about the piece is how it notes considering any of this as a "future model for new music" ignores how not-new it is. Artists have always been able to make extra scratch engaging in shameless cult-of-personality shit, it's just there's a new platform to do it on.

da croupier, Saturday, 27 April 2013 14:03 (thirteen years ago)

i mean, beatles toilet paper was a horrifying model for new music too

da croupier, Saturday, 27 April 2013 14:04 (thirteen years ago)

It’s damnably difficult to carve a private audience out of the open web...

Is that a bad thing? The possibility of friction can help keep you honest.

lazulum, Saturday, 27 April 2013 14:09 (thirteen years ago)

I wish Rod Stewart could have done a TEDTalk in 1980 about the exciting breakthrough in audience engagement via prancing in video clips

Not true, corporations tends to be more tasteful in their exploitative behaviors. For instance I haven't seen a corporation directly compare itself to suicide victims.

Jody Rosen is their new music critic -- though I believe Nabs will still be contributing.

jaymc, Saturday, 27 April 2013 17:05 (thirteen years ago)

The big difference is that Hyundai actually issued an apology after being criticized.

If they did things AFP's way then the next ad would be all about how victimized they are by the criticism from the last ad, some self-serving "We started a conversation" stuff, a "Donate to Hyundai (Donate = <3)", and a link to a website where Hyundai owners can post their own stories, which will provide content for the next next ad.
