happy house of representatives (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 12 February 2009 23:09 (seventeen years ago)

i hate fall out boy anyway, and even more so for effectively ending ashlee simpson's career via impregnating her :(

lex pretend, Thursday, 12 February 2009 23:10 (seventeen years ago)

the only diff b/w los camp! and fall out boy is that the former came up in the 90s and the latter in the 80s - of course a comparison to fall out boy is high complement imo

happy house of representatives (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 12 February 2009 23:10 (seventeen years ago)

the child, lest we forget, is named bronx mowgli wentz

lex pretend, Thursday, 12 February 2009 23:10 (seventeen years ago)

kinda wish dom wasn't banned from this thread as he's the only person i know on ilx who likes both fall out boy and lc!

happy house of representatives (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 12 February 2009 23:10 (seventeen years ago)

Hold On Now Youngster was my #1 as well, but I guess you all knew that, considering I've spent so much of the thread being such a LC! stan.

cheese and other good things (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 12 February 2009 23:11 (seventeen years ago)

dom, if you're reading, plz evaluate my claim

happy house of representatives (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 12 February 2009 23:11 (seventeen years ago)

what do you guys who like fall out boy think of their first few records?

some black dude (k3vin k.), Thursday, 12 February 2009 23:11 (seventeen years ago)

i haven't heard anything before cork tree

happy house of representatives (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 12 February 2009 23:12 (seventeen years ago)

w00t for Grouper, my vote weighed in. Hauntingly beautiful.

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 12 February 2009 23:12 (seventeen years ago)

i think all three are genre classics

happy house of representatives (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 12 February 2009 23:12 (seventeen years ago)

Hating Fall Out Boy is wrong. Do you know I know several people whose favourite albums of the last twelve months are Fall Out Boy and Ne-Yo? This pleases me immensely.

I actually only know the two most recent FOB albums.

Tim F, Thursday, 12 February 2009 23:13 (seventeen years ago)

those sounds like cool friends tim

happy house of representatives (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 12 February 2009 23:14 (seventeen years ago)

Oh Dom is banned from the thread? Wondered why he hadn't said anything about the HMHB

The User Formerly Known As Pfunkboy Latterly Known as.. (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 12 February 2009 23:14 (seventeen years ago)

x-post - they are!

Tim F, Thursday, 12 February 2009 23:15 (seventeen years ago)

yeah my distaste for their early work has prevented me from appreciating anything they've done since, though i kind of liked "i don't care".

the early stuff is basically emo-ness x1000 and devoid of any of the charisma the might have now

some black dude (k3vin k.), Thursday, 12 February 2009 23:15 (seventeen years ago)

I actually only know the two most recent FOB albums.

Same here.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 12 February 2009 23:15 (seventeen years ago)

FOB suck. Grouper rule though! Check out her other albums. All great.

The User Formerly Known As Pfunkboy Latterly Known as.. (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 12 February 2009 23:16 (seventeen years ago)

of course a comparison to fall out boy is high complement imo

Glad I don't live in this fantasy world.

Very happy for Grouper, btw -- the album is great!

ilxor, Thursday, 12 February 2009 23:16 (seventeen years ago)

id love to see your reactions to hearing the first record

some black dude (k3vin k.), Thursday, 12 February 2009 23:17 (seventeen years ago)

happy house of representatives (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 12 February 2009 23:17 (seventeen years ago)

Dom is banned from the tracks thread, not this one.

Maximo Park Ji-Sung (Matt DC), Thursday, 12 February 2009 23:17 (seventeen years ago)

I actually have zero interest in primitive FOB. I only like such bands when they go all shiny and professional (see also Blink 182).

Tim F, Thursday, 12 February 2009 23:18 (seventeen years ago)

Blink 182 and Limp Bizkit reformed this week. Wtf is happening???

The User Formerly Known As Pfunkboy Latterly Known as.. (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 12 February 2009 23:19 (seventeen years ago)

dom is banned sitewide tho right?

happy house of representatives (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 12 February 2009 23:20 (seventeen years ago)

again?

some black dude (k3vin k.), Thursday, 12 February 2009 23:20 (seventeen years ago)

sadly neither blink 182 nor FOB went shiny enough to get rid of that emo boy whine, which is like nails on a fucking blackboard to me

lex pretend, Thursday, 12 February 2009 23:21 (seventeen years ago)

dunno why im even going into this but fall out boy's vocals don't have any 'emo boy whine'

happy house of representatives (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 12 February 2009 23:22 (seventeen years ago)

Again? xxxxpost

ilxor, Thursday, 12 February 2009 23:22 (seventeen years ago)

not nearly as much, at least. it's still there though, it's basically R&B-mo

xpost

some black dude (k3vin k.), Thursday, 12 February 2009 23:24 (seventeen years ago)

If anything Fall Out Boy is a wannabe r&b group.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 12 February 2009 23:24 (seventeen years ago)

FOB are more declamatory I think. P!ATD's first album stuff had more of the whine action.

Tim F, Thursday, 12 February 2009 23:24 (seventeen years ago)

LOL R&B-mo

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 12 February 2009 23:24 (seventeen years ago)

again? xxxxxxxxxpost

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 12 February 2009 23:25 (seventeen years ago)

haha r&b-mo is good, but stump's r&b influences are what make them so great obv

happy house of representatives (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 12 February 2009 23:26 (seventeen years ago)

Sadly cant find anything else on youtube from the Grouper album.

The User Formerly Known As Pfunkboy Latterly Known as.. (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 12 February 2009 23:27 (seventeen years ago)

If Stump's R&B influences are so great, I'd like to see him solidify the Fall Out Boy legend by going out a la Marvin Gaye... xpost

ilxor, Thursday, 12 February 2009 23:28 (seventeen years ago)

ha, that was kind of in poor taste. much like a certain bassist's lyrics...

some black dude (k3vin k.), Thursday, 12 February 2009 23:29 (seventeen years ago)

grouper needs more reverb ;)

this list seems to have very little middle ground, not in terms of consensus picks, but in terms of genre.

i have been meaning to check out both the-dream and ne-yo.

tricky, Thursday, 12 February 2009 23:29 (seventeen years ago)

Do it tricky! I would think the-dream will appeal to anyone who really likes texturally sumptuous dance music.

Tim F, Thursday, 12 February 2009 23:30 (seventeen years ago)

Awww, I love Grouper! Dunno about the Mazzy Star or shoegaze references, seems to fit more into the lo-fi bedroom drone folk camp. All smeared, smudgy and half-asleep. Bummed-out duvet rock. Beautiful though. Maybe it's the scuffy and stoned younger sister of the far more glam School of Seven Bells record?

Frank Sumatra (NickB), Thursday, 12 February 2009 23:32 (seventeen years ago)

scruffy not scuffy (but that too)

Frank Sumatra (NickB), Thursday, 12 February 2009 23:33 (seventeen years ago)

grouper not on spotify :( that youtube sounded good enough for me to listen to the album in full but i guess that'll have to wait till some other time.

cheese and other good things (a hoy hoy), Thursday, 12 February 2009 23:35 (seventeen years ago)

it is, but I was trying to push ILM's buttons!

The User Formerly Known As Pfunkboy Latterly Known as.. (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 12 February 2009 23:35 (seventeen years ago)

Hah!

ilxor, Thursday, 12 February 2009 23:36 (seventeen years ago)

Most of the album is just like that, but that one song ('Heavy Water/I'd Rather Be Sleeping') is definitely the most fetching of the lot.

Frank Sumatra (NickB), Thursday, 12 February 2009 23:37 (seventeen years ago)

I think I've listened to YOTG more than most other albums this year. I haven't wanted to listen
to Love/Hate as much, but it has qualities that make me admire it more. It has a production quality
that sounds more inventive, for one thing. I'm not a musician or a music writer,
so it's hard for me to pinpoint what it is. It has a lot of open space, for one thing. It also sounds
very dream-like...maybe it has something to do with the echoey quality of a lot of the tracks?
(like "Falsetto") And I like that The-Dream writes mostly sunny melodies based around a few adjacent
notes, with lots of repetition of word/phrases (ella, ella). Even the darker, more disturbing songs,
like "Nikki" and "Ditch That N*" have a lightness of touch that's very refreshing.

With Ne-Yo's album, the production has more of a 90's vibe. I LOVE his melodies, especially on "Mad",
"Closer", and even "Miss Independent" and several others, which is why I'm so addicted to the album.
But there is a generic R&B "middlebrow" quality to a lot of the lyrics and arrangements, and it alarms
me that I like it so much, like I'm going to go to hell if I listen to it too much or something. Also,
nobody's mentioned the last track on the album, I'm curious what people think.
