ums (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 23 April 2013 18:10 (thirteen years ago)

so was the blind shake good?

i went to the hex and there was an out of town band that was on some barenaked ladies + pop punk + weaksauce "edgy" humor re: boston ish and my buddy and i retched and went to the medusa instead. it was ok! otoh it was the first time i'd been out at a show in basically months, and i'd had a nap and wasn't a sleep-deprived zombie, so who knows

three weeks pass...

Anyone know if any of these Art-a-Whirl shows are worth going to? Mostly on Sunday bc I work the rest of the weekend.

The end of the Grumpy's stage probably will be epic, but it'll be D4. STNNNG/ft(Shadow Gov't) is at the 331 Club.

hey guys i'm playing in American Cream tonight, kind of a heavy jam/psych/improv thing opening for Grant Hart and the Rank Strangers at the Turf Club

Grant should be playing stuff off his upcoming album....

American Cream is going to be me and people from STNNNG, Polica, Private Dancer, Total Fucking Blood, The Vets, Blackcloud Stallionheart, and more....2 drummer, farfisa organ, guitar, and bass....

bill is:

Grant Hart - 12
Rank Strangers - 11
American Cream - 10

not sure on cover, probably like 7 or so i'd guess

Immediate Follower (NA), Wednesday, 2 October 2013 16:07 (twelve years ago)

when/where is that? i may have blown all my new parenting leeway on trying to get to both the church of misery/wizard rifle/vulgaari show at the turf on halloween and the goblin/zombi show at the varsity.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 2 October 2013 16:09 (twelve years ago)

chr1sb3singer, Wednesday, 9 October 2013 20:54 (twelve years ago)

I stamp my own faux-vintage copper coins and use them as currency I wonder if they would accept those in lieu of USD?

chr1sb3singer, Wednesday, 9 October 2013 20:56 (twelve years ago)

Oh there's a Groupon, same dif

chr1sb3singer, Wednesday, 9 October 2013 20:56 (twelve years ago)

i'll be at the Nomad again on the 26th, my long-dormant New Orleans jazz band is playing an opening set ahead of Mama D1gdown's Brass Band.

http://blog.thecurrent.org/2013/10/first-avenue-buys-the-turf-club/?refid=0

whoa what's up with this?

goole, Friday, 11 October 2013 15:53 (twelve years ago)

yeah i was actually at the turf last night and heard that.

not totally surprised, first avenue has been promoting shows at other venues like the turf, fine line, and cabooze pretty intensively for awhile now.

i think they've coveted a venue in between the entry and the main room. entry is zoned for about 200 i think but they've packed more in but it's miserable. but there's definitley shows where they could maybe sell like 350 tickets but that would be a miserable main room show, too packed for the entry, and good for the turf or fine line.

frankly, i've been getting worried about the turf...sc@l0n is a fucking crazy person and recently came in a threw a fit and canceled a bunch of booked shows and closed the club sunday - tues. my fear was that when light rail started next year some condo developer was gonna come through and offer him a few million to knock it down.

first ave will fix is up w/kitchen and new bathrooms, etc

all this said....it's bittersweet for me. for nearly 20 years it's been as close to a home bar as i've ever had, through the current regime and before that rob and leah rule....it's been a pretty free space to do whatever the fuck you wanted, stay until 3 am after a show if you knew the folks, hang out, do weird DJ nights, whatever....

was definitely an era that was gonna come to an end eventually.

the memory i will take is of my first band playing "shots" by neil young & crazy horse at about 45 minutes past bar time with my friend pretending to fellate me and shooting a fake kid's laser gun in the microphone

lorde willin' (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 11 October 2013 15:59 (twelve years ago)

don't ever change that bathroom ever

Good times, good times

chr1sb3singer, Friday, 11 October 2013 16:04 (twelve years ago)

cool post tho, thx :)

it's one of the great bars-qua-bars we have. now that i think of it, i've only gone there to hang out and drink like once (ie non-show), that's a little weird.

goole, Friday, 11 October 2013 16:06 (twelve years ago)

I've never made it in the door. Both times I tried to see a show it was sold out :(

well if it isn't old 11 cameras simon (gbx), Friday, 11 October 2013 16:10 (twelve years ago)

bathroom is changing i heard
i think the ladies will like that news

lorde willin' (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 11 October 2013 16:30 (twelve years ago)

I am not pleased with this news. If they 86 ry@n after all his years of hard work there (and elsewhere) I will never set foot in that fucking place again.

ACA: not bad, needs more death panels (jjjusten), Friday, 11 October 2013 18:36 (twelve years ago)

ry@n is now booking at another comparable venue on the other side of the river that you may be familiar with :) (not the cabooze but you are in the neighborhood if you know what i mean)

lorde willin' (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 11 October 2013 18:49 (twelve years ago)

the schooner has shows now?

goole, Friday, 11 October 2013 18:51 (twelve years ago)

lol

lorde willin' (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 11 October 2013 19:03 (twelve years ago)

Schooner actually DOES have live music. I play there fairly often!

Low down bad refrigerator (Dan Peterson), Friday, 11 October 2013 20:14 (twelve years ago)

jesus really? i've been told to never ever go in there (and not by like suburban scaredy cats either)

goole, Friday, 11 October 2013 20:15 (twelve years ago)

i mean, it's the bar where cece mcdonald's knife fight happened, too...

goole, Friday, 11 October 2013 20:16 (twelve years ago)

i was there once cuz a friend was DJing there and it wasn't as scary as advertised IMO.

lorde willin' (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 11 October 2013 20:16 (twelve years ago)

huh all right

goole, Friday, 11 October 2013 20:17 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, the CeCe McDonald thing was totally messed up, but also an aberration. I've never seen violence there. But I've seen a lot of REALLY drunk people...
