while it's reasonable to characterize daft punk's rejection of the musical now as an instance of explicit "fear of presentism", it's not at all fair to characterize the popular anticipation and embrace of "get lucky" in those terms. there's no evidence of such fear outside certain statements made by db & their collaborators. unless we can point to some tangible expression now-fear on somebody else's part, our perception of it is nothing more than projection, assumption. fondness for things that have precedent does not necessarily reflect a fear of the present.

quiet masters & real instruments are perfectly legitimate aesthetic decisions musicians should be able to (& do) make all the time even in the present

real instruments could just be a selling point thrown in, as opposed to some ideologically-driven move by rockist fanatics. if you have a widget with an extra doo-dad, you use that to sell it. it's not like we're in the age of music as SERIOUS ARTFORM URHGHHH, i doubt there's really all that much behind it. it's not like we have people rioting in the street over the latest Todd Terje remix.

yeah, agree w all this posts (crut and spectrum, too). i'm no popist, and i figure the promo campaign is just blather, perhaps ironic or "controversial" for its own sake. doesn't fuss me much. still, i can see as you could build a case for the present-fear thing from parts of it.

analog synths are definitely embraced & fetishized by musicians, idk if they are rockists or not, certainly not by the classic definition of "rockist"

idk if they're a "real instrument" because it depends on how you define "real instrument." you can play them physically on some level and get an instant response so in that sense they can be performed "live," but there isn't an acoustic sound source like guitar/bass/piano/drums

as far as making traditional "dance" music on analog instruments goes, brandt brauer frick are making some pretty fantastic stuff right now

'you make me real' is really good, not as keen on the new one. haha and i wouldn't call it traditional 'dance' music - it's pretty out there! huge analogue basses, sampled piano strings, skittery percussion. it's very very very impressive if a little.. um, dry in places.

Brandt Brauer Frick isn't too distant from "What if Penguin Cafe Orchestra grew up listening to minimal house". Pop minimalism (Steve Reich is rather current, what with the new Pantha and Mungolian's "Toccata" from last year). Agreed with Crackle that BBFs You Make Me Real had more personal impact than the new Miami.
