Daft Punk's Random Access Memories

these are the aspects that stand out:

1. an amazing campaign of word of mouth/social media noise that has elevated the buzz for this song/album beyond rational levels
2. a six-year or whatever drought between proper daft punk albums

putting those factors aside because they're just noise in my sphere of influence just at this second, what we're left with is (a) a song that's incredibly good because shut up that's why (b) daft punk evolving to disco/funk on actual instruments played by actual people (c) a travelling groove that fuck you is the best travelling groove in years

i didn't even like daft punk once, to whit: i remember having an argument (in 1998) with an old (i'm talking in his like 50s) friend who insisted the song 'da funk' and the associated clip were the best things ever, and that daft punk were amazing and revolutionarily talented, and i was not convinced. nfi how to contact this guy now but i would potentially be rolling out a giant 'I WAS WRONG' banner

I like the song a lot, even though I don't think it's an INSTANT CLASSIC or whatever. But I do think the first time I hear it on a dance floor I will be super-excited.

Ach, that's a bit disappointing

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 21 April 2013 17:46 (thirteen years ago)

I mean that witch song made no.2 with only a fraction of the hype

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 21 April 2013 17:48 (thirteen years ago)

Looking forward to Pharrell-less remixes focusing on 2:20-3:42 of the radio edit. Last year's KDMS album had a handful of Chic tributes that walk all over the rest of "Get Lucky".

Me So Hormetic (Sanpaku), Sunday, 21 April 2013 18:06 (thirteen years ago)

smh at anyone who wants a Pharrell-less version

Important questions:
Do robots need to sleep?
What does it mean for a robot to get lucky?

Spencer Chow, Sunday, 21 April 2013 18:42 (thirteen years ago)

Ach, that's a bit disappointing

1. It was only on sale for 48 hours before the chart was calculated.
2. Since no Daft Punk single has ever even cracked the top 40 in the U.S., a top 10 showing on Billboard would be really something. Very curious to see how it'll do in the YouTube/Spotify era. Also curious to see if pop radio gets behinds it.

jaymc, Sunday, 21 April 2013 18:47 (thirteen years ago)

Will downloads of crut's Katy Perry mashup be counted towards sales?

What does it mean for a robot to get lucky?

considering this is an international smash, how does "get lucky" translate across the world? i wonder if it comes across as staying up all night in the hopes of getting a winning poker hand or something

your holiness, we have an official energy drink (Z S), Sunday, 21 April 2013 18:58 (thirteen years ago)

Let's ask google translate (English -> Traditional Chinese -> English)

Ooops, screwed up there. I fed it the Chinese as Japanese. English -> Traditional Chinese -> English is much less entertaining, with only a few gems like:

When I start thinking about this song I basically can't get the hook out of my head at all

Raymond Cummings, Sunday, 21 April 2013 21:22 (thirteen years ago)

(Which is a good thing, really.) I quite like this.

Raymond Cummings, Sunday, 21 April 2013 21:23 (thirteen years ago)

Heard it on the radio earlier today here in the greater Austin area

Change pitch, add a few shamonas here and there and voila! Off the wall Michael Jackson feat. Daft Punk.

haven't heard the song but no idea why people always seem to be wanting game changers the whole time

1. so listen to the song before weighing in 2. i didn't say i want game changers all the time. i think the song is dope & have no criticisms of it. was just advocating for evenhandedness/honesty about the fact that a lot of what is doing the heavy lifting w/r/t all the attention its getting is that daft punk have kinda become pop stars since their last album.

rap steve gadd (D-40), Monday, 22 April 2013 05:44 (thirteen years ago)

the song itself is dope & fun as a pop joint but isn't doing much new, which is not a criticism of its quality simply a statement of accuracy

and every year there are game changers

rap steve gadd (D-40), Monday, 22 April 2013 05:45 (thirteen years ago)

shocking that people are excited about pop stars

eris bueller (lukas), Monday, 22 April 2013 05:47 (thirteen years ago)

the song itself is dope & fun as a pop joint but isn't doing much new

apart from being daft punk with real instruments

that mjj treatment is sort of incredible btw

I dunno, that just make this the Daft Punk equiv. of the Neptunes' Spymob album.

It's neither a good nor bad thing in and of itself.

Still a great tune though!

Tim F, Monday, 22 April 2013 06:21 (thirteen years ago)

It is sort of brilliant isnt it? Higher pitch Pharrell does sound a lot like MJ.

Pharrell is great ("Frontin'" etc), but the MJ is *easily* the new preferred version!

How have Daft Punk become pop stars since HAF? Might be different in America but surely Discovery era was their pop star peak?

sonderborg, Monday, 22 April 2013 07:04 (thirteen years ago)

I dunno if even now I'd call DP pop stars in America, but their profile was considerably increased with the 2007 tour and Kanye West's "Stronger".
