Just to clarify: my horrible dad joke above was about calling rappers 'rap-ists' and not calling all rappers rapists. Anyway, terrible joke, flag posting myself, etc.

i associate this with disco the way i associate jt's "rock your body" with disco. this is just pop music reblogging MJ

rap steve gadd (D-40), Saturday, 20 April 2013 19:53 (thirteen years ago)

lindstrom being brought up itt is kinda hilar/completely silly

rap steve gadd (D-40), Saturday, 20 April 2013 19:54 (thirteen years ago)

we have lindstrom, why would we need pharrell singing over disco loops with nile rodgers playing guitar?

that said, while this song is p great, it's not a game changer or anything

rap steve gadd (D-40), Saturday, 20 April 2013 19:55 (thirteen years ago)

Wait, why are we expecting Daft Punk to release 'game changers' all of a sudden? Have they ever changed anyone's game? I thought they just made fun, inconsecuential music.

Moka, Saturday, 20 April 2013 20:23 (thirteen years ago)

haven't heard the song but no idea why people always seem to be wanting game changers the whole time

suare, Saturday, 20 April 2013 20:33 (thirteen years ago)

some things are just good and fun it's nbd guys

Clay, Saturday, 20 April 2013 20:36 (thirteen years ago)

there is the "looking into the future" point that keeps getting driven home in the collaborators videos but that's not necessarily the same thing as changing the game

no luck keeping sports jargon out of a Daft Punk thread.

but Lindstrom instead of Pharrell? Might as well find Fonzi Thornton.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 20 April 2013 20:46 (thirteen years ago)

the melody of Get Lucky is a slice of great pop songwriting, with maybe just a little too much of the "were up all night to get lucky" hook repetitions.

the production and arrangements on the other hand, are nothing special imo

nostormo, Saturday, 20 April 2013 21:23 (thirteen years ago)

lol oh hooray we have lamestrom, we can forget about all other house music.

brimstead, Saturday, 20 April 2013 21:28 (thirteen years ago)

is it house music, disco, jobbing nu-disco, or pop? this thread has been very confusing to me!

how's life, Saturday, 20 April 2013 21:35 (thirteen years ago)

lindstrom? whitney houston? lcd soundsystem? fuck!

how's life, Saturday, 20 April 2013 21:37 (thirteen years ago)

"Get Lucky" is okay. The best part is the vocoder explosion.

Call me at **BITCOIN (DJP), Saturday, 20 April 2013 21:48 (thirteen years ago)

early daft punk tracks ("da funk", "musique", etc) WERE game changers at the time

the late great, Saturday, 20 April 2013 22:06 (thirteen years ago)

what was the last 'game changer' in any genre

乒乓, Saturday, 20 April 2013 22:06 (thirteen years ago)

ice cr?mated (Autumn Almanac), Sunday, 21 April 2013 06:56 (thirteen years ago)

imo get lucky is disco but not particularly good disco -- production is perfectly taut and light but overall it's too unremarkable

flopson, Sunday, 21 April 2013 06:59 (thirteen years ago)

it's also catchy as hell and has a fantastic groove

ice cr?mated (Autumn Almanac), Sunday, 21 April 2013 07:05 (thirteen years ago)

it's not the second coming but it is a very good song

we're up all night to eat biscuits (Autumn Almanac), Sunday, 21 April 2013 09:46 (thirteen years ago)

itunes says 36 plays and it's still amazing and you are wrong is what i'm saying

we're up all night to eat biscuits (Autumn Almanac), Sunday, 21 April 2013 09:47 (thirteen years ago)

these are the aspects that stand out:

1. an amazing campaign of word of mouth/social media noise that has elevated the buzz for this song/album beyond rational levels
2. a six-year or whatever drought between proper daft punk albums

putting those factors aside because they're just noise in my sphere of influence just at this second, what we're left with is (a) a song that's incredibly good because shut up that's why (b) daft punk evolving to disco/funk on actual instruments played by actual people (c) a travelling groove that fuck you is the best travelling groove in years

i didn't even like daft punk once, to whit: i remember having an argument (in 1998) with an old (i'm talking in his like 50s) friend who insisted the song 'da funk' and the associated clip were the best things ever, and that daft punk were amazing and revolutionarily talented, and i was not convinced. nfi how to contact this guy now but i would potentially be rolling out a giant 'I WAS WRONG' banner

I like the song a lot, even though I don't think it's an INSTANT CLASSIC or whatever. But I do think the first time I hear it on a dance floor I will be super-excited.
