theory: this song isn't "nu-disco" (cause nu-disco is boring) it's just simply "disco"

sandra dayo connor (The Reverend), Saturday, 20 April 2013 01:19 (thirteen years ago)

it even has nile rodgers on it as proof

sandra dayo connor (The Reverend), Saturday, 20 April 2013 01:20 (thirteen years ago)

post-post-disco

does Pharrell singing ruin Shake Ya Ass for you

nah, it was a cool song but it being by a rapist kind of makes me more depressed than Pharrell's singing

Dr. Adorbius (mh), Saturday, 20 April 2013 03:39 (thirteen years ago)

most people call them 'rappers'

Bobby McFerrin, Quantum Physicist (Sufjan Grafton), Saturday, 20 April 2013 09:07 (thirteen years ago)

Just been played on Radio Six and I thought it sounded awesome. I like Pharrells voice in this, its pretty funky. The sound is interesting and has some good beats. We'll see if it gets played to death and loses its charm, which I always think is a good durability test.

staying up all night to get lucky (captain rosie), Saturday, 20 April 2013 11:38 (thirteen years ago)

if you don't already think pharrell has kind of pissed on this then here you go http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xz612n_daft-punk-ft-pharell-get-lucky-first-live-performance-htc-concert_music you're welcome I don't hate pharrell but his vid for the collaborators thing also the lamest he seems such a lamebrain

on the record the multitrack vocal chorus is actually fine but the verses particularly the opening one sound clumsily dumped on top of music plus lyrics bad

conrad, Saturday, 20 April 2013 12:41 (thirteen years ago)

The hype and 1 minutes preview kind of ruined it for me. I'll enjoy this probably more in the context of discovering the album.

Van Horn Street, Saturday, 20 April 2013 12:55 (thirteen years ago)

This feels like a star wars thread rn

The description of my page is: Gargoyles Swimsuit Special (Matt P), Saturday, 20 April 2013 14:01 (thirteen years ago)

Listened to this in the car this morning and it sounded great. Its position in the tracklisting is interesting too, in between the two "cosmic", "psychedelic", Paul Williams songs, like it's going to be a breath of fresh air and lightness between some denser material.

naturally (xp)

I have many lovely lacy nightgowns (contenderizer), Saturday, 20 April 2013 15:30 (thirteen years ago)

it's funny, i was thinking about all the new disco/boogie stuff we were talking about on some other thread - skream's latest remixes, krystal klear, jessie ware's new one, gorgon city - and how much more alive those vocal performances (and indeed arrangements) sound

That stuff is filed away in a totally different part of my brain though, it's mostly derived from 88-93 pop house rather than either the 70s or early 00s disco that Get Lucky comes from. I don't even associate it with the European disco guys either, there's a definite Brit feel that separates it from anything we're talking about here. And I don't think Jessie Ware's performance on Imagine It Was Us is that great, but that's for another thread.

Matt DC, Saturday, 20 April 2013 15:44 (thirteen years ago)

Just to clarify: my horrible dad joke above was about calling rappers 'rap-ists' and not calling all rappers rapists. Anyway, terrible joke, flag posting myself, etc.

Bobby McFerrin, Quantum Physicist (Sufjan Grafton), Saturday, 20 April 2013 17:06 (thirteen years ago)

i associate this with disco the way i associate jt's "rock your body" with disco. this is just pop music reblogging MJ

rap steve gadd (D-40), Saturday, 20 April 2013 19:53 (thirteen years ago)

lindstrom being brought up itt is kinda hilar/completely silly

rap steve gadd (D-40), Saturday, 20 April 2013 19:54 (thirteen years ago)

we have lindstrom, why would we need pharrell singing over disco loops with nile rodgers playing guitar?

that said, while this song is p great, it's not a game changer or anything

rap steve gadd (D-40), Saturday, 20 April 2013 19:55 (thirteen years ago)

Wait, why are we expecting Daft Punk to release 'game changers' all of a sudden? Have they ever changed anyone's game? I thought they just made fun, inconsecuential music.

Moka, Saturday, 20 April 2013 20:23 (thirteen years ago)

haven't heard the song but no idea why people always seem to be wanting game changers the whole time

suare, Saturday, 20 April 2013 20:33 (thirteen years ago)

some things are just good and fun it's nbd guys

Clay, Saturday, 20 April 2013 20:36 (thirteen years ago)

there is the "looking into the future" point that keeps getting driven home in the collaborators videos but that's not necessarily the same thing as changing the game

no luck keeping sports jargon out of a Daft Punk thread.

but Lindstrom instead of Pharrell? Might as well find Fonzi Thornton.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 20 April 2013 20:46 (thirteen years ago)

the melody of Get Lucky is a slice of great pop songwriting, with maybe just a little too much of the "were up all night to get lucky" hook repetitions.

the production and arrangements on the other hand, are nothing special imo

nostormo, Saturday, 20 April 2013 21:23 (thirteen years ago)

lol oh hooray we have lamestrom, we can forget about all other house music.

brimstead, Saturday, 20 April 2013 21:28 (thirteen years ago)

is it house music, disco, jobbing nu-disco, or pop? this thread has been very confusing to me!

how's life, Saturday, 20 April 2013 21:35 (thirteen years ago)

lindstrom? whitney houston? lcd soundsystem? fuck!

how's life, Saturday, 20 April 2013 21:37 (thirteen years ago)

"Get Lucky" is okay. The best part is the vocoder explosion.

early daft punk tracks ("da funk", "musique", etc) WERE game changers at the time

'i like that beatles song except for the lennon/mccartney stuff' xp

ice cr?mated (Autumn Almanac), Sunday, 21 April 2013 06:56 (thirteen years ago)

imo get lucky is disco but not particularly good disco -- production is perfectly taut and light but overall it's too unremarkable

flopson, Sunday, 21 April 2013 06:59 (thirteen years ago)

it's also catchy as hell and has a fantastic groove
