windows 95 was the primary vehicle for the ascendency of weezer, discuss
The release included a number of "Fun Stuff" items on the CD, including music videos of Edie Brickell's "Good Times"[13] and Weezer's "Buddy Holly", most notably resulting in a sudden skyrocket in the popularity of the video and song "Buddy Holly" that won Weezer a place in MTV Music Video Awards history.

The thing that always struck me about Homework was the artwork inside with all of the tchotchkes from their various influences -- The Beach boys sticker, etc. Notwithstanding "Teachers," very little of that showed up in their music until Discovery.

Ok, here's the full translation to the french article:
Give Life Back to Music
"One of our ambitions for this album was to create something that was both light and elegant. In this song, John Robinson Jr. plays drums. He was also the session drummer for Michael Jackson's "Off The Wall". What's great about having a performer like him is the infinity of possible shades: something we couldn't have achieved with electronic programming. Albums produced by Quincy Jones have always fascinated us by their ultimate precision that has never been achieved by any technology whatsoever. It's the fundamental difference between "Thriller" and "Bad." In the later, the quality of the production is very high, but the performance feels lackluster. "
The Game of Love
"We sing with vocoders. These days human voices are processed to sound robotic, we find exciting to make a robotic voice sound as humane as possible. The idea of artificial intelligence imitating men ... An emotion of something that is not human but tries to be. "
Giorgio by Moroder
"We met (Moroder) several years ago and he has always been for us a kind of mythical figure, a little mysterious. We were interested in his personal journey through music. The idea behind this song is to reenact some sort of documentary based on a series of interviews we conducted with him. Giorgio Moroder's voice was recorded with multiple microphones several different times ... in the end we recorded about three hours of interviews in which he recounts his life as a musician. This piece is a metaphor for musical freedom: we have always tried to break down the barriers between genres, between good and bad taste, the connected and unconnected. Giorgio is a bit of a model of its own kind. He was born in a small provincial town, began studying music in hotel lounges, started as an opening act for Johnny Hallyday doing progressive rock. To hear him say at his 72 years, "ah, I made electronic music forty years ago," it's fascinating. "
Within
"Gonzales plays the piano on this song. He's a friend and a great pianist, one of the best musicians of his generation. "Within" is one of the first songs we recorded. It is very minimal: a sparse rhythm section, bass and piano. Create more with less, this was the idea behind the song's title. "
Instant Crush
"This song features Julian Casablancas from The Strokes. We are both great fans and we were told that he wanted to meet us. We had a demo lying around when he came to visit us, we showed it to him and he loved it. He has a gift. At our core, we love rock and the concept of a rock band, but for us it was always difficult to emerge as a new voice in that genre. Modern bands like, say, The Strokes or MGMT - with their own dimensions and sensitivities - did succeed. Julian has a punk rock side, that creates a strong emotional impact in his melodies. It was important for us to make this album feel surrounded by our contemporaries.
Lose Yourself to Dance
"This song defines best what we desired to do with this album: very detailed but simple at the same time, nothing but bass, drums, guitars - and robots! This is the opposite of something overproduced. Our fantasy was to redo dance music using real drums. Doing this record has brought us enormous satisfaction, we are proud of using real drums on the album and not a rhythmbox. There are two drummers on the album: John Robinson Jr., who holds the record for most recorded drummer in the world, and Omar Hakim, who started playing with Stevie Wonder since he was 16 years old."
Touch
This song marks the second part of the album. It is at this point we're we met with sound engineer, Paul Williams. Paul Williams visited us in the studio and from this meeting something very cinematic and very narrative(?) was born. "Touch" clearly defines the psychedelic aspect of "Random Access Memories." This piece is made up of 250 different tracks, this is a complicated, crazy piece.
Get Lucky
"Pharrell Williams sings this song: it felt natural to invite him to our album. He is a born performer, very elegant. He rarely gets the chance to show he can be a great singer, so we wanted him to act as a voice from the pantheon of legendary performers. There is no imaginary line that separates the great artists of the past and present. We wanted to give the impression of being in a capsule in the studio, isolated from the world. We don't want to give the impression that we're stuck in 1978, our idea is to take this kind of music to the present and into the future, see what happens and see if pur enthusiasm for it is contagious. "
Beyond
Another piece created with Paul Williams who wrote the lyrics. It is a cosmic, super song with poetic lyrics. We talked a lot with Paul Williams of the direction we wanted to go to with this album, and it was worth it, since he knew how to write down the words to our ideas.
Motherboard
A futuristic song, something that could come from the year 4000.
Fragments of Time
"Our reunion with Todd Edwards [house composer] after "Discovery".
Doin’ it Right
"The angelic voice behind this song is Panda Bear [Animal Collective]. We love his solo work, as well as the approach of his band. This piece - the only electronic song on the album - is the last one that we recorded. The end result is very relaxed. Probably the most futuristic and contemporary piece of the album."
Contact
A piece made with DJ Falcon based around NASA's Apollo 17, the final Apollo mission. The voice is that of Captain Eugene Cernan, the last man to have gone to the moon. It is a voice that comes, literally, from space.

Right cause it's not like they had a Chic record in that image while their most popular track at the time was anchored around a "Good Times" bassline.
― sandra dayo connor (The Reverend), Friday, 19 April 2013 20:15 (thirteen years ago)
Wait, what track? Da Funk? That's a stretch.
― Ismael Klata, Friday, 19 April 2013 20:17 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah, it's about as much "Another One Bites the Dust" as it is "Good Times."

am I the only person who doesn't feel Pharrell's vocal on Get Lucky at all? Love the track and the vocorder part, but the vocal seems weak and generic.
― charlie 4chan, internet detective (Hurting 2), Friday, 19 April 2013 20:28 (thirteen years ago)
I think The Reverend was refering to Around the World, which I am unsure as to whether or not it's more popular than Da Funk.

That's generally been my response to Pharrell as singer; he manufactures a feeling. It works here though -- the vocal is more anonymous than Nile Rodgers -- because the damn track is hologram disco anyway.

his vocals on the verses are really great, there's something very old school in the looseness of the singing, the tossed off little ahhs and hmms and shit
― J0rdan S., Friday, 19 April 2013 21:06 (thirteen years ago)
yeah i actually like the way he sounds like he's just woken up during the first verse

best part of this song is the outro, rest is pleasant, not feeling the vocal whatsoever. this is a decent driving around town jam but it's not transcendent like their peak.

unless
ya, this would be great as an instrumental or w a different singer. and the lyrics jeez...cornball central haha... i cant sing along to these lyrics without cringing inside or laughing... granted, dance music isnt meant to have profound lyrics but these are just bad...sigh.

Okay, first up... what's with the Pharrell hate? Is there some sort of venn-circle diagram that shows Daft Punk listeners and the immense amount of awesome stuff Pharrell has touched bizarrely don't overlap, which explains this? Or is it specifically his singing, like, does Pharrell singing ruin Shake Ya Ass for you? 'cause to my ears that's music at it's most exuberant and who would hate that? Or is it just not on your radar? I don't know.
And also, part of the charm and joy of this track, for me at least, is that it's four producers playing together. There is no front man and it's not meant to break down like that. It's like a supergroup of producers. It's very mannered and conceived in the way music nerds make things.
