One of the breeziest most enjoyable pop tracks likely to come out all year, one that gets me going like all hell together with this summer weather and the cherry blossom peak season, and you guys sour up the thread nitpicking quotes from people who also talk about I don't know space and aliens and robots operating in the 5th dimension to change your life in relation to this project I mean come oooon it's a party up in here.

I played the official release out tonight btw. Nobody seemed to recognize or notice or be particularly enthralled. (This was at a fairly shitty portland indieish dive bar though so I mean what do you want)

there's a ton of jobbing nu-disco around right now that's better than this, even minor stuff!
I would happily check out a ton of jobbing nu-disco too - even minor stuff! - if you'd obligingly drop some names instead of just obscure genres. : D
― how's life, Friday, 19 April 2013 10:27 (thirteen years ago)
well there's nu indie disco like the lindstrom and chrisabelle record or pop like kylie and madonna, classic dj stuff on environ morgan geist etc or there's re-edit stuff like pilooski, dimitri from paris, leo zero, todd terje and about 10 million 'underground' names like patrizio & andrea, love unlimited vibes, then there's the whole claremont 56 thing with people like in flagranti, mudd, linkwood then you've got disco edits from detroit which has been happening forever, same with underground french filter disco, london has always had a huge disco scene from the tonka days with dj harvey or like idjut boys or whatever
nu-disco a totally meaningless term tbh and this doesn't really feel like it's part of any of those scenes but it certainly feels like it's at least aware of them, nods to soft rock, analogue recording, chic, balearic, it's a bit crusty/stoned but all in the context of a pop single / art project

u think daft punk invented it but yr wrong
fuckin "kylie and madonna" etf. XD
the rest of that is good info though. I love lindstrom, although not the christabelle record, and todd terje. the rest of those names are completely mysterious to me, so I'll gladly check them out. it doesn't make me like this song any less though (and I'm not an enormous daft punk fan to start with.

― Deafening silence (DL), Friday, 19 April 2013 14:32 (thirteen years ago)
the part they've been pushing at the coachella fest and elsewhere is great but the pharrell verses before and after that are horribly flat, vocally and musically, pharrell's "uh"s and "aha"s sound lazy as hell. like he just doesn't know what else to do other than make that lame sound. shame because that leaked section was so promising.
― i lost my shoes on acid (jed_), Friday, 19 April 2013 14:39 (thirteen years ago)
I don't care if people think this song sucks -- I love it but it does sound kinda weird/flat if you listen to it right after e.g. a Le Knight Club record -- but trying to say what they're doing is "rotten" is almost offensive to me. I feel a good heart behind the music despite the high-budget hijinks.
― crüt, Friday, 19 April 2013 14:49 (thirteen years ago)

― I have many lovely lacy nightgowns (contenderizer), Friday, 19 April 2013 15:44 (thirteen years ago)
pharrell's vocal sounds kind flat like that because that's what a vocal sounds like that hasn't been hacked to death. i really his delivery in this. mix and mastering engineers have done an A+ job on this, just had a listen through a big soundsystem and it just gets better and better the more you turn it up.
― Crackle Box, Friday, 19 April 2013 15:54 (thirteen years ago)
yeah - i was just gonna say, it sounds minimally processed (mainly on the chorus) and given what we saw from moroder yesterday, it's Very Much Intentional
― 乒乓, Friday, 19 April 2013 15:56 (thirteen years ago)
tbh I think the Moroder post was based on the 128kbps mp3 which might just not get that loud to begin with -- that's how the low bitrate My Bloody Valentine mp3s were. Tho it definitely lacks that vacuum-cleaner compression sound, which is a good thing IMO.

Lex you are doing that thing you did on the Justin Timberlake thread when you don't even actively dislike the record but are basically declaring a fatwa on it because other people have the temerity to find it enjoyable.
If you listen to enough nu-disco you basically get used to terrible European singers vamping their way over a fantastic groove and credit to Pharrell for nailing it here.
Although I'm guessing Daft Punk themselves actually wrote the song?

― 1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Friday, 19 April 2013 16:45 (thirteen years ago)
Pharrell never really had charisma in front of the mic imo. Like he was always a bit awkward. Anyone think Timberlake would have done a better job on this?
I agree with jed about this record basically, it's pretty good imo but the snippet promised a bit more in terms of his performance. For some reason I feel like an extended mix could really do the job for this.
Be interesting to see which remixers they get in too, with a pick of whoever they want, presumably.
Could largely do without hearing any more "nu-disco" again, fwiw.
― Tioc Norris (LocalGarda), Friday, 19 April 2013 16:45 (thirteen years ago)
no discussion of nu disco that is supposedly better than daft punk is complete without mentioning classixx. 'get lucky' is quality, doesn't outshine the other disco i like, but fits happily right beside it, and i'm super excited to hear what the rest of the album sounds like. it's just more fun with the hype-train and fanfare and everyone being into it, obviously lex disagrees.
― karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Friday, 19 April 2013 16:47 (thirteen years ago)
it's funny, i was thinking about all the new disco/boogie stuff we were talking about on some other thread - skream's latest remixes, krystal klear, jessie ware's new one, gorgon city - and how much more alive those vocal performances (and indeed arrangements) sound
