Love the beat but Pusha is pretty generic on "Numbers." I even liked the Tyler's Crazy Uncle era better.

Time for an ILX teaching moment: Can someone explain to me why Pusha is, it seems, generally thought of as a joke? I dug Hell Hath No Fury, paid zero attention since then, but am loving this new album pretty much top to bottom.

AS: It dates back, I think, to Clipse's national breakout as a blog favorite at their start and Pusha's monocular focus on drug sales
― there's no camera to capture that yelping moment! (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 5 November 2013 03:33 (twelve years ago)
my boy was trying to tell me the kelly rowland track has pusha doing a "perfect 98 ma$e flow" which i guess is kinda true but is that really what you want people saying about your album?
― adam, Tuesday, 5 November 2013 04:23 (twelve years ago)
the mase thing has been in every review i've read. dunno why he does it but it's fairly spot on. but yeah ... odd.
like all sane ppl, i despise Chris Brown but i like his hook on Sweet Serenade. the Rowland song is less successful.

― there's no camera to capture that yelping moment! (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 5 November 2013 06:36 (twelve years ago)
Throw the words "in nyc" in somewhere if u want
i think that if you want to truly understand the clipse narrative you have to listen to the singularly bleak we got it 4 cheap vol 3, especially the punishing despair in the 4 track stretch from "good morning" to "fuck you." i find it so fascinating how the same tribulations that turned both brothers numb caused malice to go christian and pusha to double down on his bullshit.
"desperate" mentioned upthread pretty much nails it for push i think. for yeeeeears he's squandered immense talent by devoting it all to his need for acceptance. he's spent a comical length of time whining about his lack of mainstream breakthrough. most reasonable human beings would reevaluate their priorities after two uber hyped albums arriving with consecutive thuds (i know consensus was that HHNF was nice, but i think it's boring). funny to think he might finally have it now at the age of like 40. kinda screams pyrrhic victory.
as i've said already i haven't examined his recent breakthrough anywhere near closely but if i did i bet i would see some herzog level irony in the narrative. from what i understand this could be his nic-cage-in-bad-lieutenant moment... grinding away looking increasingly pathetic for wayyyyy too long and all of a sudden the clouds miraculously break and he suddenly gets everything he ever wanted. i mean i guess i have to be happy for the guy but at the same time "euch"

maybe i should just be happy to come to the record w/o a bunch of Clipse/Pusha baggage...i just enjoy the beats and most of the rapping. simple.
wish he would've ditched a feature or two, but oh well.
― alpine static, Tuesday, 5 November 2013 16:27 (twelve years ago)
this is so great: pusha doing grindin' at sxsw while tyler, earl, taco, etc. rap along like giddy fanboys, and push is clearly appreciative (perhaps overly so, tbh).

i'm surprised that nobody mentioned how incredibly appropriate the marlo line is for the LP title. (after being disappointed at the poor showing of this poll). like, of COURSE pusha idolizes marlo, maybe the most idiotically hardheaded tv character. pusha also shares marlo's self destructive streak. his bro basically shoving the "walk away with some dignity" in his face and push is like "nooooo but i wanna be faaamous"
some of the lines on the new mixtape along the lines of "i know i'm making all the wrong choices but can everyone just pretend i'm tony montana for a sec". "i am forgiven" is just so painful. it almost becomes compelling in the same way marlo was kind of my fav character on the wire... but even though i'm spending a lot of breath bitching about push here my appetite for trainwrecks has decreased significantly as of late. yeucch

i know this isn't a thread for 'the wire', but this characterization of marlo stanfield bugs me, man! like...what show were you watching? is this a british person?
― slam dunk, Tuesday, 18 March 2014 04:25 (twelve years ago)
came out of lurk to respond
um... wire spoilers ahead?
it was a bit much of me to call marlo an idiot. he was pretty savvy. i think i was just annoyed by his nihilism. like... what was his endgame? what did he hope to achieve? like, the other kingpin dudes seemed to enjoy being kingpins, even stringer. but marlo always looked like he hated it.
same deal with pusha. i've always found him to be extremely unconvincing when he's "having fun". when he does these tracks like "i'm good" i got a serious uncanny valley creeped outedness. even in that video. i'm sorry, i guess i just refuse to believe that him and tyler the creator are friends.
also im canadian so kind of quasi british i guess. i even said i'm sorry there
― fennel cartwright, Tuesday, 18 March 2014 07:27 (twelve years ago)
i think your overall gist is pretty close to how i feel. especially, like, "my name is my name"...that wasn't a hot line! that was him being foolish! and the other big line of his that people quote, "you want it to be one way, but it's the other way"...i kinda do think the writers wanted him to come off stupid.

saw push tonight, not bad live!
we’ve got to save him from this good music executive role, though, because there were too many musical montages of his guest spots in the middle of the show instead of full tracks of his own material. at the least his dj could have done more interpolation, maybe lyrics over diff beats

the variety review is getting dragged, but there's nothing wrong with being sick of pusha's particular thing. where the reviewer went wrong, i guess, is that you shouldn't wish that pusha were a different artist (he clearly will never change), it's that you should listen to somebody else.
