乒乓, Wednesday, 17 April 2013 18:06 (thirteen years ago)

yeah sounds solid. curious what a more song based daft punk will sound like, i know they're not crazy about the edm wave they helped inspire and they're looking to 'go forward by going back' or whatever but 'get lucky' sounds way more like something that can blow up on radio in 2013 than 'digital love' or even 'one more time' did in 2001. curious also to see how ppl's expectations are coloring their reactions, my mindset is 'there's no way they're reinventing the wheel or whatever again, if this is just a good solid daft punk album i'll be happy, if the gap between this and discovery is only as narrow as the gap between 20/20 and fs/ls - very doable - i'll be ecstatic, if this thing is somehow as equal to discovery as mbv was to loveless my mind will be blown and i'll believe in god' and so so far i've been very happy, everything has at least met my expectations (pharell concerns alleviated by 'get lucky', now i'm just worried about casablancas). otoh a friend of mine that was looking forward to this like it was the phantom menace and was expecting them to at least equal discovery was near devastated by that coachella clip the second he saw pharell's face. my take is this - daft punk had more mystique than basement jaxx back in the day cuz there was more mystery to them and they hyperfocused and executed on two different ideas for their first two album, real termite art, while basement jaxx were never quite that focused, they always just threw a fun sloppy party. plus daft punk managed some level of mainstream success, far more than basement jaxx (in the us at least). the actual gap between the two wasn't much though i'd argue - i'd take remedy by a hair over homework, discovery by two hairs over rooty. neverminding kish kash, which at the time i thought was at least on a par w/ rooty but no sounds like a definite step down if still leagues better than human after all and obv sadly everything basement jaxx have done since, we're a decade out from either of these acts peaks and expecting either to suddenly get that genie back in the bottle following either years of visible decline or years of two efforts that 'don't count' and one amazing oldies tour is setting yrself up for disappointment.

The present has no limit?

warm winds and clear skies, Wednesday, 17 April 2013 18:09 (thirteen years ago)

At 2:20 it sounds like the robot voice is saying "we're a-all mexican"

Fetchboy, Wednesday, 17 April 2013 18:10 (thirteen years ago)

i mean i had crazy expectations about the dj koze and so was crazy disappointed by it for no good reason, my reaction to matthew dear was the same as my friend's to pharrell (and i like matthew dear alot, he just does not work on that track); now i've gotten over whatever baggaged i carried in and i'm loving the album, if the new daft punk is half as good i'll be blown away. listen w/o prejudice yall.

balls, Wednesday, 17 April 2013 18:11 (thirteen years ago)

that makes me sense, but "ribbon" fits with "gift" in the next bar

Like the legend of the phoenix
All ends with beginnings
What keeps the planet spinning?
The force from the beginning

We've come too far
To give up who we are
So let's raise the bar
And our cups to the stars

She's up all night till the sun
I'm up all night to get some
She's up all night for good fun
I'm up all night to get lucky
We're up all night till the sun
We're up all night to get some
We're up all night for good fun
We're up all night to get lucky

We're up all night to get lucky

The present has no ribbon
Your gift keeps on givin'
What is this I'm feelin'?
If you wanna leave I'm wit it

We've come too far
To give up who we are
So let's raise the bar
And our cups to the stars

She's up all night till the sun
I'm up all night to get some
She's up all night for good fun
I'm up all night to get lucky
We're up all night till the sun
We're up all night to get some
We're up all night for good fun
We're up all night to get lucky

We're up all night to get lucky

LADIES ONLY PHYCHIC NIGHT (crüt), Wednesday, 17 April 2013 18:20 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah I dunno... that beginning part doesn't sound like the same Pharrell who sings the rest of the song. And the ending could just be some guy playing doop-be-doop over one of the samples with his keyboard.. although it's a nice keyboard fill and it's consistent with the keys on previous Daft Punk recordings.

I dont know what to think.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 17 April 2013 18:23 (thirteen years ago)

LADIES ONLY PHYCHIC NIGHT (crüt), Wednesday, 17 April 2013 18:25 (thirteen years ago)

Either way it's a fun little mystery until we know what's really going on.

haha

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 17 April 2013 18:25 (thirteen years ago)

I imagine that in the LP version, there will be more vocoder and the appearance of those string synths that were in the composite fan version from last weekend will build the outro vs. what it is on the single edit.

But there is no way what we're hearing today isn't the legit single edit. C'mon!

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 17 April 2013 18:27 (thirteen years ago)

^ Yup. Hi-hat rhythm in this is just so bangin'

warm winds and clear skies, Wednesday, 17 April 2013 18:28 (thirteen years ago)

I don't like how Pharrell's voice just sort of drops out of the mix after the first chorus without any other dynamic change in the mix. Otherwise I am cool w/this.

I'm holding off 'til I get it on my big speaker at home, can't hear properly on these Bose Zapruders

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 17 April 2013 18:32 (thirteen years ago)

I thought those synth string bits were a creation of that guy who did one of the earlier fan mixes and also put a realy bad guitar riff in

Definitely hoping for more of the 2:30 vocoder bit at some point

crazed lerner fan (Sgt. Biscuits), Wednesday, 17 April 2013 18:38 (thirteen years ago)

<i>I thought those synth string bits were a creation of that guy</i>

They may be.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 17 April 2013 18:39 (thirteen years ago)

could probably have just listened to Infinite Nile Groove for the rest of the year and felt pretty good about life so anything on top of that is clearly a bonus

adam, Wednesday, 17 April 2013 19:02 (thirteen years ago)

Balls - Basement Jaxx were quite a bit bigger than Daft Punk in the UK, I believe, but that may be the effect of releasing a Greatest Hits that did really well. Plus their sound fitted in really well with the High Street bar house music of 1999-2001 anyway, in a way that Daft Punk's didn't (bar One More Time which was all over the radio). Like I couldn't really imagine Daft Punk headlining Glastonbury but Basement Jaxx did.

At the same time mystique and focus goes a long way and Basement Jaxx with never be *loved* in the same way Daft Punk are, and DP are amazing at cultivating affection. Like it's 10yrs since the last good Jaxx album and 12 years since the last good Daft Punk album but one band has spent the intervening time totally pissing over their legacy and the other hasn't. Which is why Random Access Memories is one of the three most hyped records of the year and no one in their right mind cares about about a new Basement Jaxx album in 2013.

Also the contrast in quality between Get Lucky and the abomination of a new single over on the Basement Jaxx thread is ridiculous. I dunno, maybe Daft Punk really did spent eight years cultivating perfection, is it that far fetched?
